Not bad 7/3/2009

Nothing special in here. The music is too outdated. I'm not talking about those retro stuff 'cause that's common sense. The sound system is too annoying. It's not good for your ears. Too much treble and I can't even feel the bass at all. There's a distortion/noise with their sound system too. I mean, it's really ok to blast those speakers onto it's full volume as long as it won't distort that much.. Divided rooms are too close to each other as in you could really hear mixture of different genres which is also annoying. The ambience is so dirty. more

My Favorite of all time 2/10/2009

I was introduced to the World when I was 19 and have been going ever since. I'm now 27...almost 28 (yikes!) and I still LOVE this place. The crowd on Friday nights are more friendly, and there are a lot of regulars. Saturdays there is great musictoo but I noticed the people can be a little rude though. Oh, and the sweetest bartender is this little lady in the back room, she takes care of me everytime go. Pros: Atmosphere, music Cons: They turn the heater on sometimes!, prices for water are high more

Holloween night? 10/27/2008

Great place for 80's. Love going there. Has anyone been there for holloween night? Dont know if I should go there. more

Great music, fun time. 10/23/2008

I drive down from UCSB as often as I can to go to Clockwork Orange. This club has great music and a decent environment. My ex and I are well over 21 but still enjoy The Ruby. You should understand that with a busy schedule as a full time student who works full time I'm very busy but I choose to drive past probably 100 other places that are much closer to Santa Barbara because this place is far superior. I don't care if some people are 8 years younger than me the music is worth it. Pros: The music Cons: For me the drive Why can't Santa Barbara have a place like this? more

Fun 8/13/2008

3 rooms of different kind of music, Mixed crowd's as well as multiple bar's. The night life doesnt really doesnt start till midnightish. more

Clockwork Orange Drama 8/6/2008

On Friday August 3 I tried to come to Clockwork Orange. The bouncer wouldn't let me in he thought I was drunk. He wouldn't even talk to me about this. I tried to talk to him and he just said I am not letting you in. He just said no. I tried to talk to the girl outside and she just told me that she is in promotions only and can?t help me. She could have gotten the right person for me very easily. Now I know I may have a medical condition that I am going to the Doctor to find out what is wrong. I have an appointment with a neurologist and at this point refusing me entry is like discrimination. I was so excited to be going dancing at your club because I have been going there for years, but you need to talk to your employees they made me feel so bad I almost cried. Then of course it cost all that gas money for you to tell me no. I basically never want to come there again because of the horrible treatment I received. I want to still talk about this to see what you will be doing to make me feel a better about this. It would be bad if I had to do something drastic. more

80's every sunday night!!! 6/12/2008

amazing!! I go to BEAT IT every sunday night! They have awesome 80's music which is so fun when you go with your girlfriends! I always meet the coolest people there too! If you go to their website you get in free most weeks with a print out pass. I always find parking on the street and getting in is always quick and efficient. The drinks aren't too pricey comparing other clubs and the bartenders are really nice. If you want a night out with the girls to get dressed up and have a good time this is the place. However i only go sunday nights so i dont know how the other nights are. The guys arent pushy if you dont wanna dance with them and you will have a good time no matter what. I've been going there every sunday since september and it is still the highlight of my week! Pros: free most weeks, great people, great music Cons: none! more

Avoid during the week! 4/29/2008

For 18+, I'd heard this place was about as good as it gets. My friends and I needed somewhere to go dancing on a thursday night, so decided to check it out. After dropping an hour's drive time and a $13 dollar cover, turns out thursday night is goth/industrial at the ruby. People were dancing slow-mo matrix style, decked out in black, leather, and chains S&M style. When we asked the bouncer if this was a special event or something, he scoffed and said, "It's ALWAYS been like this," and proceeded to make fun of us to his bouncer friend as we walked out. Moral of the story: don't go during the week. Unadvertised special themed nights go on, and none of it is broadcasted via the internet. NO REVIEW ANYWHERE warned us of this. I'm here to fix that. more

Great for under 21 7/30/2007

I'm 20 years old and i wasnt too fond of the place. the $13 charge was too much for the environment. I kid you not but most of the people coming in looked underage, the music was fine but most of the kids were just hanging out like it was homecoming. I like places with a variety of people but most of the kids there were very emo. more

Ok, if you can't find anything to do on a Saturday 6/25/2007

I mean...the must is good...the venue is cool...the people are not cool If you have nothing to do with friendsit is a fun place to be...but like you will only talk with your friends. Pros: Good music + Dancing Cons: the people more

A youngster trendy hangout 11/17/2006

There are a lot of young people, and 99% of them are all skinny jeans wearing emo kids OR they're into the whole 80's flashback scene. It's pretty much a young scenester hangout. It's a fun place for people under 21, but if your 21+, stay away. Pros: Fun occasionally Cons: Lots of young kids more

Ruby is Rare! 7/10/2006

I like the atmosphere of the three various rooms. Main Room: 80's, Second Room: Indie Rock, and Third Room: Hip Hop. The crowd varies just like the rooms. If you want to go somewhere with someone under 21 then this is one of your best bets or if your looking to meet someone 18-21. It is a little expensive if your going to drink cause there is a $12 cover. I like going to this place to dance, but there is also alot of room to lounge. Pros: 3 Different Rooms, Great Dancing, Packed Dancefloor and still pleanty of room to lounge Cons: Cover, Young Crowd more

An eclectic mix of personalities and scenes 5/12/2006

I had been to the Ruby a couple years ago, and was not wowed by it. I found myself back there recently with a younger friend of mine. Let me just say, that I was amazed. The decor was better than I remembered (I love the huge video screens), and the crowd was mostly young good looking people. The location is at the edge of the sketchy stretch of Hollywood Blvd, and there is no street parking around there (I had to do a pay lot). However, the crowd is really good (it was PACKED), and I think that the cover charge (13 bones when I went) was really reasonable. The music has something for everyone, 80s hits (the main room) and two smaller rooms, one of which plays electronica/indie rock, and the other mainstream hip hop. The crowd was equally mixed. Good place for sampling LA lifestyle Pros: crowd/pop., short entry line, decent value Cons: parking, location more

Ruby isn't a gem but it's definitely valuable 4/2/2006

I like the atmosphere here. It is a mix of Hollywood clubbers. You won't find the stuck up crowd that is only looking to make a name for themselves. In this place personality is more important than money. It's more like a NYC club crowd. The only thing is the music is very lacking. Although I love indy rock and hip hop the selections they make are pretty bad. I like The Killers and Mos Def but please no Usher and cheese rock. The main room plays 80's hits which is fun, but gets boring after a while. Pros: People, Service, Space Cons: Music more

The godder place if.. 3/28/2006

u're a freak.. under 21 and wanna have fun.. this place is good to dance and have a good time but not to drink cuz the drinks are expensive.. Pros: music, funny people, crew Cons: $$$ drinks, hot inside more

Eh... 1/27/2006

The Ruby had good music, lots of dancing, and a large crowd. The decor was nice, and from a distance, everyone appeared to be pretty badass in an offbeat sort of way. However, once you are actually in the club, looking at the crowd, you realize that it only looks good collectively, and individually, most of the guys are really strange losers who can't pick up girls. If you go just to hang out *exclusively* with your own crowd, it can be pretty fun. You won't find Paris Hilton here, but if you want to get groped by sweaty 30 year olds from urban sprawl, you might hust have yourself a good time. Pros: Decor, Music, Dress Code Cons: Sketchy Men more

The Ruby = Suck Central 10/15/2005

The Ruby sucked. I went on a Saturday night basically because it seemed the best of all other L.A. clubs (18+) that I could find. 1) The three "rooms" with different "music" all blend together and become one cacophonous haze of indistinguishable noise. 2) Hip-hop is impossible to butcher but the main floor featured a blend of punk and 80's much of which was very Killers-esque which is fundamentally awful for dancing. The "house" section was uninspirational, lacking quality, and generally unpleasant. Wow. 3) The crowd is meager at best and downright sketchy at worst. I can't believe I found this club in dowtown Hollywood. Aesthetic value here was also, with maybe one exception, downtrodden. 4) I seriously have never been so disappointed in $12 or a night that I was hoping would be fun. I brought a friend from Colorado and it was a complete waste of time. Pros: None Cons: Weird crowd, Bad music, Poor atmosphere more

FUN 80'S!!! 3/15/2004

I've been going to The Ruby for a long time and I'm never disappointed on how much fun I have. Clockwork (Friday's) and Beat It! (Sunday's) are the best nites to go. It's 3 rooms with DJ's spinnin' hip-hop/pop, 80's and gothic. So you can honestly say there is a little something for everyone. $12 might be considered pricy for some, however, you don't ever have to pay that much if you have a flyer, and you can get those in LA Weekly's, online and they hand them out on your way out. I like the crowd, even though it may be on the young side, but we were all 18+ at one time and wanted a good place to party. What I love most is you can wear WHATEVER you want. I once went in my PJ's!Definately one of my fav. clubs in Hollywood. Pros: GOOD Music, FUN Crowd, NO Dress code Cons: , Hot Inside more

a good time was had by all 5/9/2003

My first time at Bang was excellent. The cover fee was practically highway robbery. The staff was nice and gracious. The atmosphere was moody but also pop art. The club really gave me the impression that anyone, no matter their taste in music, could have fun inside. The music they played was rockin' and they played many great songs but also some that I hadn't heard. The drinks were good but I don't remember how much they cost because I didn't pay for any of them. The crowd was friendly but also into their own thing. Definitely a place to come back to again and again. Can't wait 'til I go. See you there! more

kinda boring 4/28/2003

I've been there a few times to Bang! before I turned 21. It still got lame pretty fast. The crowd were like Sunset strip rejects--acting like they were somebody when they were all nobody. (At least on Sunset most of the people are good looking, not at the Ruby!) I went once after I turned 21 after I left Par Avion across the street super bored. Even drunk it wasn't that fun. Even though the club is huge, there's still not much room for people who really know how to dance. Pros: big club, easy to get in Cons: crowded smoking patio, not worth cover, not-fine crowd more

Editorial

  • This Hollywood venue hosts different clubs on different nights, popular with the new wave, hipster and 18-and-over crowd. Inside, music videos and movie clips are played as a DJ spins and go-go boxes beckon dancers who are not so shy. Unlike the ultra-trendy clubs on Hollywood Boulevard, the scene at The Ruby is much more relaxed.
