Good Indian vegan food 5/31/2010

I have never had any issues with the service. The interior of this restaurant really needs an overhaul, because it looks old, dusty, and dreadful. But the food is vegan, hot, and while not delicious very pleasant. My favorite is the giant dosa which is a great treat any time of year. I did not appreciate the drinks/teas/lassis, I wish they'd make fresh juice or at least have organic teas available. The food is average, but gets points for being vegan. I think if they redid the atmosphere more people would be attracted to it. Pros: Dosa, vegan, price more

Best Indian in East Village 11/9/2008

The food is literally addicting - and the price and service are perfect. If you are reading this - I highly recommend you go try it - you will be thrilled. Truly do not understand even one bad review. Of all the Indian restaurants - this is the absolute best. No argument. Chowhound agrees!!! more

I'm surprised by the bad reviews! 8/9/2008

I am very surprised to see the negative reviews for Madras- I went here with two friends and we really enjoyed it. Our food was very flavorful, and we certainly got plenty of it. We also had no trouble with the service, which we actually found to be very attentive and polite. I wonder how we ended up having such a good experience there when so many other people apparently didn't. Hmmm. more

Waste of Time and Money 7/11/2008

i have lived in the neighbourhood for a while it was originally a japanese restaurant, then uder new management was converted to an indian restaurant . Since they opened this place went tthough a lot of changes but the food was always great and the service average. Recently in the past 3 yrs I even though I know the owner Manny a nice guy I have recieved spoilt food and bad service. I am not sure why but I do not think manny spends as much time as he used to i rarely see him now a days and his wait staff right now is rude and incompetent Pros: forget about it more

charged for items we did not order, terrible service, and much better value elsewhere. DO NOT EAT HERE! 7/21/2007

terrible 7/21/2007

The only reason I give this place two stars is because the food didn't completely fall under the categor of inedible. The service was horrible. There were tables reserved for a party, and before the birthday girl even got there the waiter was complaining to us that there was a reservation for UP TO15 and he lost another reservation because of us. Then he handed us menus and expected us to be ready for appetizers almost immediately and was annoyed that we needed more time to choose. The waiter walked away from us as we were ordering! When he came back to order entres he complained to us that we weren't ordering enough, and he was blaming us for loosing money. Then when they bring out the food, since we didn't know what exactly came with the dishes when he raised his arm and said coconut blabla someone raised their hand and it turned out not to be part of the meal.... he again complained about the fact that he ordered a second one to replace, and CHARGED us. I'm sorry but what kind of waiter doesn't know what comes with each plate, and isn't it their job to know who ordered what. Then after the meal were we were being HARASSED by the complaints of the waiter he has the nerve to tack on an 18% service fee... which by the way he later points out on the most hidden part of the menu that parties over FOUR people get charged service fees. This has to be by far the most inhospitable and unproffesional 'establishment' i've ever stepped foot in. and the dosai tasted like deep fried paper. Pros: no meat Cons: everything else more

Delicious Dosai's 11/9/2006

Great vegetarian Indian food. Everything is actually cooked to order rather sitting in the back in steam tables like your average 6th Street curry house. The dosai's (kind of lentil crepe burritos) are excellent and filling. I enjoy the curries but almost always opt for the dosai's. The atmosphere is very plain and uninspiring. Pros: Dosai's Cons: Atmoshphere more

very average indian food 12/10/2005

Although the food was decent, it's a major exageration to call this place insanely good. The 3 dishes were all pretty bland and not very spicy at all. The entrees are reasonably priced, but considering the tiny portions and the mediocre taste, it's not a very good value. Some of the places in midtown are definitely better. Cons: food more

Delicious! 3/31/2005

The best indian food for the money. Try the saag panir and homemade cheese or one of the sampler platter. Everything is great, even if you are not vegetarian, you will love it. more

CASUAL DINING AT ITS BEST 1/9/2005

I MUST STEAL THE WORDS FROM AN EARLIER REVIEW WHERE THEY DESCRIBED THIS RESTAURANT AS INSANE IT IS HARD TO COMPLAIN IN THIS RESTAURANT WHERE THE VALUE IS CLEARLY SURPASSED BY THE QUALITY OF FOOD AND SERVICE. THE WAITER WAS THE NICEST GUY HE EVEN WARNS US THAT WE WERE ORDERING TO MUCH FOOD OR JUST SAYS THAT THIS IS HORRIBLE FOR SOME THING HE WAS NOT CRAZY ABOUT. THE FOOD FAR EXEEDED ALL EXPECTATIONS I THOUGHT IT WAS A MISTAKE SO I VISITED TWICE SINCE THE FIRST TIME AND EACH TIME I WAS MORE IMPRESED. A PLACE LIKE THIS IS HARD TO STOP TALKING ABOUT . Pros: FOOD, SERVICE, PRICE Cons: , PARKING, AMBIENCE more

BEST FOOD IN TOWN 12/28/2004

While the decor here is average, the food is INSANE. I literally eat at this restaurant about 4-5 times a week minimum and I am not a vegetarian. Also, a lovely bonus is that since I became a regular I have lost weight as a direct result of eating their low fat/cal menu items. The owner and his top guy will mold any offering to your taste and will suggest things you may have never even considered based on your tastes. I always leave feeling like I had the best meal in town. There is a reason this place has become more and more popular over the last few years. Oh yeah, it's also insanely cheap for the food and quality. Lovely! Pros: AMAZING FOOD, HEALTHY AND FRESH, CHEAP! more

Indian Food that Stands Out in a Crowd 7/15/2003

You will never miss the meat at this wonderful vegetarian South Indian restaurant. The owner also works in the kitchen and gives special attention to everything prepared right down to each sauce/chutney. It's located near 6th Street but in terms of food quality, it's a million miles away. I've tried nearly everything on the menu and it's all great! Try the duhi vada, vegetable uthappam, masala dosa, chili pakora, poriyal, korma, plain paratha, etc. Portions are generous - order several things to share with your companions. Pros: Quality of Food, Price more
