Small but FIERCE. 4/8/2006

Just got back from the traveling-Lichtenstein exhibit. Fantastic! Earlier this year they had a Lynn Hershman exhibit up and the works were very provocative. Compared to the Seattle Art museum downtown the Henry is the superlative choice. While the Art museum has a more varied collection, the Henry will more often bring in the better traveling exhibits. And on top of that, it's FREE for UW students! more

a good mixture of exhibits 8/21/2005

This art gallery / museum focuses on contemporary art with retrospectives of individual artists, as well as exhibits focusing on specific themes or media. The gallery benefits from large, well-lit gallery spaces illuminated by pyramidal and cubic skylights that can be seen as soon as you enter the main entrence. Photography and video are both well represented. The newest installation is Skyspace. It's a small room with oval opening in the ceiling to frame the sky. There is a cafe in the gallery where you can grab a sandwich. more

Great Art Gallery on the UW Campus 8/17/2005

The Henry Art Gallery is located on the western edge of the University of Washington campus and easily accessible by public transportation (decent on-campus parking generally available on the weekends). The Henry's exhibitions are constantly changing, so it is fairly pointless to comment on any one particular collection. However, I have never been disappointed on any of my many visits. The curators put together amazing shows and utilize the beautiful space in creative ways. Admission (under $10) is still a pretty good deal in our highly overpriced town. more

Contemporary art, more exciting than SAM 7/14/2005

While I may not always love every exhibit, I always find something exciting at the Henry. My favorite kind of art is video installations and all the big names in this space have been represented here, most more than once. I've also been introduced to some of my now most favorite artists, like Wolfgang Laib and James Turrell - make sure to spend some time in Skyspace, the permanent Turrell installation. more
