All of the fruit stands at LA's historic Farmer's Market at 3rd St. and Fairfax Ave. are good, but The Fruit Co. consistently has a more extensive collection, better quality and competitive prices. If you have the time when shopping, you will get the best deals and produce by visiting all four or five fruit stands and comparing stock and deals--fruit is so delicate, if one place just got strawberries in that morning they may have the best ones for the day. But overall, The Fruit Co. is very good. They always have about four varieties of red and green grapes, five or six different types of plums, red and golden raspberries, kiwis from New Zealand, Chile and California (all of which have different flavors), and hard-to-find English Peas (a favorite of mine). They have sweet corn, tons of different peppers, melons, citrus galore and many varieties of tomatoes. They also have fresh herbs. And I'm only scratching the surface here. You can't beat the selection. I will say that I often find though that Trader Joe's is often better in quality and price on the few fruits it carries (like raspberries, strawberries, blueberries). But it's really about when each place got their deliveries relative to when you are shopping there. Freshness is everything.
