Worst

I have enjoyed lunch here on several occasions, so decided to take my husband for dinner. It was a huge disappointment. The focaccia bread was dry with a tough overcooked crust....

The Cocktail Party was a Success! 1/29/2011

I would highly recommend City Tavern as a place to host a private event. We held a surprise birthday cocktail party for my sister in Nov. In the planning leading up to the event Ernesto and the staff were helpful and flexible. They had several different packages of cocktails and appetizers to choose from and had no problem with us putting up a few decorations and bringing a cake. The space itself is very warm and rustic, big windows and lots of brick. During the event, the waitstaff was very attentive. No one was left waiting long on a drink order. Being a surprise party, the event got started a little late by the time the guest of honor showed up, but Ernesto allowed us to extend the time of the party and to continue celebrating. I would definitely return for another party! more

Great for semi-private parties 10-35 people 5/15/2010

Last month I was looking for a restaurant in the Union Square area to host a group dinner for my staff of 30 professionals. I couldn't find anywhere who would entertain a pre fixe less than $40 (and I was willing to do a Tuesday night at 5:30!) until I found City Tavern. Ernesto, the owner and chef, was extremely accommodating. He put together a great menu on fairly last minute notice (one week!), was a pleasure to work with, and got us a great price point ($29 per person (not including alcohol). We had the front 1/2 of the upstairs which essentially felt private for our team. Everyone thought the food, service, and atmosphere was excellent. I definitely recommend the City Tavern for a group dinner. Pros: Nice atmosphere, reasonably priced, good food Cons: None noted more

Nothing special 12/26/2009

In a very competitive market this place is nothing special. The food is bland and the wine is horrible. The place was empty and that is why I shouldn't have even bothered. Pros: ? Cons: Where do I begin? more

fake italian 12/14/2009

this place was full of italian expat, now nobody speaks a word of italian nor cook authentic food, the menu still from chef baecco iban, whom he left 6 months ago,and owner giovani. Pros: great chicken wings Cons: no italians more

buonissimo 8/16/2009

On a Sunday evening my friend and I spontaneously met up on Union Square to grab a bite to eat. I have been wanting to go to Borgo Antico but have had a hard time getting a reservation on a days notice. On a whim we decided to try...the place was packed, but luck was on our side as the host-owner giovanni was able to seat us right away at a table that was just cleared. Another women checked our bags, she was so cheerful and friendly. We really felt that we were appreciated for our business. The meal was fantastic and our waitress was kind and friendly, not overbearing. The atmosphere was lovely and it was one of those truly enjoyable dining experiences. I will celebrate my 30 birthday here with 30 friends. Pros: italian owner more

forza italia alza latesta 7/7/2009

After reading in City Search that this was a ""The Best Italian Food,"" I was psyched to go for some good Italian. Turns out, there's a reason that professional food critics exist - this restaurant is great. The atmosphere is super comfortable. The service was informal and intelligent. Every thing I tasted was awesome, and just different enough to edge this place above the generic Italian food that's so easy to find in this city. I found it to be overall quite reasonable as well. The pork saltimbocca was delicious, cooked beautifully. All the pastas were fantastic, with inventive use of ingredients that tasted familiar yet new.giovanni keep up the ship ! Pros: great Cons: o more

good all the way 5/7/2009

ur love affair with Borgo Antico started years ago. We had reservations at Gotham Bar & Grill and were early (we were in black tie because we were later going to The theatre to see ""fuerza bruta"" for a special birthday event) so we stumbled around the neighborhood until time for our reservations and discovered Borgo Antico. We found the downstairs area- with a full service bar well stocked. The host and bartender were wonderful. They made us wonderful martinis and took us upstairs to see the beautiful dining room. They had us at ""olives or a twist"". The food is lovely and the service is always superb. I've always said that if I lived in New York, Borgo Antico would be my regular neighborhood haunt. It's terrific. Pros: food, all italians more

best wine better food. 1/2/2009

I love borgo antico. Last time I dined here (this past Saturday with three friends) we started our dinner with a few pasta dishes recommended to us by the General Manager. They were all delicious, but extreme raves to the Chef's ivan of what I would call the best pasta in nyc. pasta dish, are extremely satisfying plate and borgo antico homemade pasta with chestnuts and lucious creamy Italian cheeses. We decided at this point we wanted some wine. We had a conversation with the sommelier -owner giovanni who gave us some outstanding recommendations to pair with borgo regional (and seasonal) dishes. The wine here is extraordinary and very carefully chosen. in fact he received two years in a row the wine enthusiast award for wine list. Not to make this review a novel, when all is said, this charming little gem of a restaurant presents to it's guests creative and beautifully presented meals. Pros: wine bar, food, private party room more

im an Italian in New York and dining out 20 times in a month at NY's reputedly marvellous restaurants. Pros: food, price, service more

Avoid at all times. 7/11/2008

These people know how to rip you off. Make sure you ask how much are the specials before you order them. Typically they will cost you 2-3 times more than the most expensive items on a menu. And don?t expect a great quality for your money. The quality of food is worse than in the most Italian restaurants in a city. more

Commercial! 7/5/2008

This place is like an Amex commercial. Great food, cozy atmosphere, and the friendliest and most attentive service I get in NY, hands down. Everything is fantastic. The fettuccine alla bolognese, the strudel di formaggi and the insalata di spinaci... And actual friendly waiter speaking Italian - I don't feel like I am being waited on by resentful out-of-work actors. Definitely a great local find and a new favorite. more

the real deal 6/4/2008

had the pleasure of having dinner Borgo Antico for my birthday earlier this year and it was one of the most memorable dining experiences I've ever had. I ordered the 3 course tasting menu with the wine pairings. My waitress was extremely friendly as she explained each dish and the reason the particular wine was chosen as a pairing. The service was top notch and always on top of everything from clearing plates, refilling water, and serving my wife first before me on each course. I was very happy that I was able to come here to celebrate my birthday. What a treat! Pros: menu, service, wine more

INCREDIBLE!! 5/23/2008

I have been dining at borgo antico for over 13 years and can honestly say that I recommend eating at BORGO ANTICO for any occasion whether it be a romantic occasion, a business dinner, a family get together or a night out with your friends. The staff will automatically tune in to the type of experience you want and will make you and your guests feel like true VIPs (GIOVANNI have got to be doing something right because they have the most friendly, knowledgeable and professional staff I have ever seen in a restaurant). The food is a true experience in Italian cuisine (giovanni and Chef ivan spend countless hours on their menu every week). the new selection of cheeses is one of the finest in the city. Pros: food, ambiance, music Cons: ? more
