GLAD IT""S CLOSED! 2/23/2008

SO glad it's closed! It was seriously the worst place EVER IN THE HISTORY OF PLACES TO EAT. I CAN'T BELIEVE I AM TAKING THE TIME TO WRITE THIS! more

Excellent baked goods; Friendly staff and patrons 11/2/2007

I love going here on the weekends with my dog. There's a bowl of water sitting out for doggie customers even. It's really small, but perfect for a quick bite. I don't tend to order their hot breakfasts, although I do highly recommend their hashbrowns. I typically order a pastry, a coffee (not the best espresso drinks, but ok) and read the Onion on their patio. more

Not good first impression 10/1/2007

My first visit to the bakery to check out the baked goods, specifically, I was looking for a cupcake. There was only one customer in there - even though I heard this place gets crowded in the morning. She took her time and the gentleman behind the counter didn't acknowledge me. He was slow to complete her order. \r \r The selection was very poor. I picked up a carrot cake cupcake instead, which wasn't that great. The other goodies, like croissant, looked quite good though. The menu looked fabulous so I am returning within the week to sit down and try the breakfast menu. \r \r I'll report back on my second impression!\r \r Pros: menu variety Cons: price on cupcake! more

Tasty breakfast but overpriced 7/24/2007

I'd heard raves about this place so tried it for a casual Saturday breakfast. My fried egg sandwich was delicious but at over $8 for a breakfast sandwich at an order-at-the-bar cafe where we sat outside on rickety chairs on uneven pavement I'd say it's overpriced! Pros: Tasty fried egg sandwich Cons: too $$$ for zero atmosphere or service more

thumbs down on Styrofoam 1/16/2007

best coffee but sometimes they burn the espresso if it's a new person.. yikes!\r good service days/bad service days. \r worth the long wait on weekends..? sure! \r pastries: thumbs up\r breakfast / lunch / dinner: okay and over priced.\r Styrofoam?? still haven't figured out why a decent place such as this hasn't \r realized that it's bad for their image. oh well. Pros: coffee, baked goods, good music while you eat. Cons: Styrofoam, long lines on weekends, more

Too long of a wait...food not that great 11/4/2006

Ok so you can bring your dog...and???...We waited over 1 hour for our food last Sunday, by the time it came I was greatfull for anything...I think they should hire a few more servers...Don't go here if you are really hungry..EAT BEFORE HAND!!! more

Real pastries, real people, real cute dogs and real good homemade food!!! 6/23/2006

When I wake-up in the morning, my mouth starts watering at the thought of running to the Backdoor bakery before work and indulging in one their many homemade morning delectables. Croissants, muffins, brioche, the out of control (soaked over-night) French Toast, the fruit pancake-- it's like have a gourmet Mama at the Backdoor Bakery. The food is always made to order and it is fresh, with homemade condiments such as jam and even ketchup! There is simply no comparison for the Backdoor bakery and if you have been tricked into thinking Fred 62 or Cafe 101 is tops, then you've been sadly and horribly mislead. The Backdoor bakery itself presents itself as humble in comparison to the quality of food; the owners, the employees and the customers and their little dogs too are always packing a smile(Seating is mainly outside on the sidewalk, across from Spaceland--watch the local Silverlakies go by and it is smoker friendly)! There is only one drawback-- it is cash only, so be prepared but with the constant foot traffic the cafe recieves, it is understandable why they wouldn't want to incorporate waiting for credit card authorizations, while starved customers are clamouring for such awesome food. \r \r My last thoughts are-- they have the best damned pastries in LA! They make REAL croissants, REAL brioche and REAL everything. What more could one ask for?\r \r ***AND they are now open on Mondays! Pros: Everything. Cons: Nothing. It's a gem in a city that is commonly known to have mediocre food. more

The best croissants in LA! 4/20/2006

I thought I would never find a place in LA with the same quality croissants I had in Paris, but I have been proven wrong. The plain croissant here is crispy outside and fluffy inside, not huge and not too small. With a latte and a bit of jam, it is a true continental breakfast. And, if that's not enough, their hash browns are a far cry from the greasy, soggy mess you usually get a diners, looking more like a potato pancake--deliciously crispy and not too heavy. If you make it there at 7am, you can get the bakery goods hot from the oven. The only drawback is the price, which is higher than normal (about $3 for a croissant). But, hey!, if you don't spend the money on a good thing once in a while, what's the pont of earning it in the first place? Pros: Best croissants, Nice ambience, Great food Cons: Pricey, Crowded at peak times more

Yum 4/21/2003

We originally went to the Back Door Bakery after seeing it listed in the LA Times as having one of the best, most interesting pancake in the city. And they were right! It is super fluffy and covered with grilled fruit, but unfortunately, it takes 20 minutes to cook. Soon, I got addicted to their breakfast quesadilla, loaded with fluffy eggs and grilled vegetables. It comes with great hashed browns and homemade ketchup and salsa. I love it! Unfortunately, they are closed on Mondays and there are only a few tables inside so when it rains it can be uncomfortable. Pros: food, inexpensive, eclectic Cons: parking, service, crowded more
