If you have not gone to Annie at The Upper Hand for a facial or massage, you are missing out. She is Houston's best kept secret. Her facials are specific for each customer's needs and desired results. If you don't know how to achieve your desired results, just ask, but more than likely she will have already told you. My husband was military and we have lived all over the US. I can tell you from a broad range of experience I have never found anyone better than Annie. more

Great Results... 6/18/2008

I went to the Upper Hand after reading the great reviews online. They all seem accurate. The place is a great one stop shop for all your pampering needs. I chose to receive a color and cut from Shiva and again the reviews were correct. She is great. LIstens to you and explains her suggestions. My hair was in much improved condition after some of the treatments she applied after the color. Also, she is the first stylist I have ever had that actually style/blew out my hair perfectly, so I didn't have to rush home to correct the ""do"". Pros: very flexible with their schedule, conveniently located Cons: haven't found any yet more

Highly Recommend 6/14/2008

I highy recommend Danielle at The Upper Hand. I had to find a new stylist when I stopped working downtown and was very nervous to trust my hair with someone new. But it ended up being fine. As well as being really personable, Danielle also gave me a great haircut and highlights. Most importantly, she took the time to listen to what I wanted and she really tried to give me exactly the degree of highlights and the type of style I asked for. Pros: Great Service more

Impressive service, great haircut 6/2/2008

I was first enticed to try this place out when I saw all of the positive reviews on Citysearch. It's very rare for a place to get so many positive comments. I called on a Thursday to make a Saturday appointment for a haircut and style, and I had no trouble at all getting the time I wanted. The girl on the phone was very nice. She said that my appointment was with Bryan. I arrived about 10 minutes early for the appointment, and he was even able to take me right away. He listened to what I wanted to do with my hair, and I love the outcome! Bryan is a really nice guy and very talented! Pros: very skilled staff, good lighting Cons: the chairs are kind of uncomfortable more

BEST Hair advice in a long time! 5/29/2008

I had a wonderful experience at the Upper Hand at Royal Oaks. I was looking for someone who could give me advice on my dry, ""hay like"", over treated, over flat-ironed, frizzy hair and I found Serena! What a blessing! I went in for a consultation where she ""heard my hair woes"", looked at my hair and thoroughly explained my options. Ultimately she recommended a deep conditioner, which she applied in the salon, and then showed me better techniques, different products, and tip/tricks to drying and styling my hair. It's not often someone makes you a promise and you see the results!! Amazing! I appreciated her honesty b/c I thought the answer to my hair problems was another thermal straightner which she could have easily sold me. Rather she instructed me that the key to better hair is getting it back to a healthy state. Thanks to Serena I am on the road to a healthy head of hair and I am SO very glad I found her! I highly recommend her if you have issues with your hair and are tired of spending money and time elsewhere without improvement. more

Great Haircut, nice atmosphere. and friendly staff! 5/29/2008

I moved here a year and half ago. After going to a couple of hairdressers and being very disappointed I got on the computer one morning and found great reviews about Jillian at The Upper Hand. So I took a chance and made an appointment with Jillian who by the way is very sweet , knowledgeable, and personable. I am over 50 and just wanted an age appropriate haircut but with style. I saw one of her haircuts in the salon and told her, "" that is what I want but not as short"". She not only did a wonderful job but this is honestly the easiest haircut I have ever had. I waited for the second haircut before I wrote a review to make sure. I am sure I will be going for many more. I have had compliments from all age groups! Now that is a testimony in itself. Pros: Offered suggestions but didn't argue and improved what I wanted. more

So, I had chemotherapy in 2007 and lost all my hair. In April (2008), it was about 2 inches long and I had a friend here in Houston lighten it. It turned orange and then canary yellow! A day later, I had a hairdresser in NYC tone it down but he told me I couldn't do anything with the color for 4 weeks (for fear it would all fall out) and that when I did, I should ONLY go to a salon in Houston that used Kerastase products (a divsion of L'Oreal). I searched Citysearch, found Upper Hand - Royal Oaks and walked in. I looked like a freak show and I was very nervous that they wouldn't be able to help me. Bryan is the best! 5/20/2008

I've been going to The Upper Hand - Royal Oaks for about 6 months now. Bryan gives such great cuts and color. I had been going to a large salon for years and felt like I was herded around when I went there. I decided to try a new salon and had read great reviews about The Upper Hand, and gave it a shot. It has such a great atmosphere, and so opposite of the salon I went to before. Wow, I'm so glad I did! Bryan really listens to me, and he also gives his input, which I really want to hear. Pros: Great location, everyone is so friendly, super cuts and color! Cons: ??? Don't know of any more

HE IS HONEST AND TELLS YOU WHAT HIS OPINION IS BUT WILL CUT YOUR HAIR THE WAY YOU WANT IT EVEN IF HE DOESN'T AGREE!!! :) HE IS THE ONLY PERSON I HAVE FOUND THAT ACTUALLY CUTS MY HAIR AND I LIKE IT EVERY TIME!!!! Jeni can fix your hair, met her in NY at Bumble and Bumble 5/17/2008

Cheap and impulsive--that's me, so I cut my own hair often. This last time I cut off 12 inches and had my husband try to fix it over and over for about a month. It was sort of cute in the beginning, but as it grew out (we're talking chin length) it started looking pretty butchy, so what did I do? Called Jeni. There really isn't a question of who I'd go to. Sure enough, she cleaned it right up! Pros: Great haircuts and they use high quality products when doing your hair, smells so good too! Cons: Really far away from my home. more

I love the Upper Hand Royal Oaks, my husband saw one to the stylist Serena on a local talk show and insisted that I go in and speak with her about my hair. See recently my hair had become very damaged and was breaking badly. I was at wits end and very frustrated because my hair had never been that short before. Best Haute Hair 5/16/2008

I just want to let everyone know that when I go to the Upper Hand I only ask for Serena. She is one of the best stylist in Houston Texas, only she knows how to rule my unruly curls and tame them to be as straight as a arrow. There are not a lot of people that know how to cut nautrally curly hair and I have to say she does the best job.I could never think of going to anyone else to after I had Serena work her magic. more

Give yourself the gift of Sherry 5/16/2008

Sherry is a gifted stylist. I am particular about my hair and not very many stylists have pleased me. Then along came Sherry. She is masterful, versatile and gifted. Her work is truly her art. I receive compliments on my hair style and I have had loads of compliments on the color of my hair: a shade of red that is consistent. Sherry's shampoos are World Class and ever so nurturing. She takes the time to massage your scalp and Oh My Goodness, it's the BEST! Give yourself the gift of Sherry. I do whenever I am in Houston. Best colorist in Houston area 5/13/2008

I have been going to the Upper Hand for several years now and I am not the easiest client to deal with, I am sure. I have gone dark to light and light to dark and have loved every change. JENI Poll is the BEST colorist, she can tell you what looks best on you and will get you there without damaging your hair. JENI really is AMAZING! The Upper Hand has a great staff as well as a great atmosphere!!! Pros: Always leave with a smile Cons: A little pricey, but worth it! more

Fantastic Service 5/13/2008

Ladies, if you're feeling down and out I highly recommend going and getting yourself pampered at he Upperhand and asking for JENI. Not only is the atmosphere very cool but they offer you something to drink and they usually have yummy cookies to snack on. It's amazing what a pair of scissors in the hands of a professional hairstylist can do for a woman. Especially when that amazing hairstylist has an amazing personality and makes you feel confident in what will be the best cut for your hair. Seriously folks, JENI is the Bomb-diggity. Pros: Thumbs of hands and toes up :) Cons: not in my neck of the woods but definitely worth the drive more

Jeni's the HOTTEST STYLIST ever!!! 5/13/2008

My daughter and I had the best experience at the Upper Hand. Both of us get lots of compliments on the colors of our highlights and lowlights. Love the haircut too! We really applaud Jeni for taking the extra time to discuss the best way to keep the color looking great. Houston's ""Upper Hand"" has the edge on hair design because they hire such able stylists. Three cheers for the Upper Hand and especially our favorite stylist JENI POLL. Pros: Style of cut and perfect hair color combination I have had! Cons: The mirrors make me look fat.... more

I heart Jillian 5/13/2008

I've never really been a hair freak, and always tell my hairstylists that I'm not talented when it comes to fixing my own hair. Jillian is the first hairstylist who actually listened to me and cuts my hair so I barely have to do anything to it and it looks good. I get compliments on my hair now, and always tell people to go see Jillian. The friends I have referred to her love her as well. She always listens to what you want to do with your hair. I'd let her cut my hair while I was sleeping. She's very thorough with her haircutting and styling. more

Best hair salon 5/13/2008

Anyone that goes to another salon is out of thier mind. No touches my hair but Gillen. If she is gone I ask to refer me to someone. They all have always above and beyond to take care of you. The color they use is wonderful it stays longer thn other brands and it makk my thick hair feel like silk. Please please try the Upper Hand you will fll in love with the staff Pros: To many to tell you here Cons: I cannot think of any more
