Duck Foie Gras Cappacino in a word: YUM 11/13/2006

I'm happy with the Heathman choice. My friend made a comment about it not being romantic as the usual places we've been. I tend to agree. The lighting is bright, the seating arrangement can accomodate big groups, etc. But the food was exceptional. I can't say anything bad about the taste. The price, ehh..maybe a little high. So what did we eat? To start: Duck Liver Cappacino, Lamb Tongue, Syrah 2003 -Dragon (Australia), Entrees: Venison, Duck Confit, Dessert: Chocolate covered Cream Puffs, and a Tropical Dessert. This was one of those times when conversation made the evening. The food/tastes were secondary. Not very loud . Excellent place to talk. more

Fantastic Service 11/10/2006

Where do I start. We were spending the night downtown for a romatic evening and to be around the hustle and bustle of election night. Since we were going to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall we decided to stop in the bar and grab a few quick bites and some good drinks. Thankfully a table opened up pretty quickly because the place was packed! When we order our drinks I asked for Jim Beam on the Rocks and my girlfriend ordered a fancy martini...can't remember which one but it was very good. The waiter came back and informed me that they were out of Jim Beam...shock...horror...what is a Jim Beam faithful to do? Go to the next best thing, and it isn't Jack Daniels...sorry folks Jack is not a BOURBON. I chose to go with Basil Haydens, one of Jim Beams top shelf bourobons. I mean it was a special night so why not splurge. When the waiter returned he informed that since they were out of Jim Beam, he would only charge the Jim Beam price for the Basil to make up for it. I couldn't believe it. Money wise I had not thought much about my choice. I wish I could remember our servers name, a true gentlemen and knows what customer service means. We decided to go with the seared Ahi tuna and the Fondu appitizers. i wanted to try the lamb tongue, but they were all out. Guess I will have to go back :-). Food was excellent, service was prompt, and the atmosphere was bar-none. We will be back. Oh yeah our server got a fat tip for the bourbon swap....this place has won me over!!!!! Pros: great food, good service, neat bar Cons: ran out of Jim Beam....but hey it happens :-) more

Great experience all around 11/6/2006

My wife and I stayed here on our wedding night and had no complaints. The check in/out process was very simple and the staff was super friendly and helpful. Our room was very nice and comfortable, one of the best rooms I have ever stayed in. The location is also supringsly easy to get to. I was a bit worried with all the traffic out front, but the staff does a great job of making everything as easy as possible for customers. more

Make you feel like a King 11/5/2006

All I can say is WOW!!! The hotel is absolutely gorgeous. The Heathman makes you feel like a King as soon as you walk in. The bed menu is great, it allows you to choose what kind of mattress you desire. Too cool!! The marble bar is nice, and serves great drinks. The restaraunt looks nice, we chose to have room service for a romantic evening. Their romantic package is worth the money. We also had a couples massage that was wonderful. I have never been so relaxed in my life! If you like historical hotels with great service this is the place for you. We had a Renaissance Room that was very comfortable. The 2 bathrooms made getting ready in the evening and morning easy for us. We will definitely be back!!!! Pros: Service, boutique hotel, hotel staff Cons: Cost for middle incom couples this is a once in awhile treat more

Let down for the ages 9/26/2006

Dinner before symphony, a beautiful evening, ""check out the Heathman--it won't let you down.""\r We sat outside, met our most attentive waiter, and the night went down from there. Steak untrimmed with gristle and fat resting on a bed of runny, lukewarm mashed potatoes, a salad with a non-existent vinagarette dressing--but the wine was fabulous.\r Service good, food average to below average...and quite expensive for that. Pros: great wine Cons: poor food more

Their lounge is the best date spot in town 9/2/2006

I've been here twice now - both times were for after dinner dessert and coffee only in the lounge - and I must say that I have been very impressed. The ambience is to die for. Half or more of the seating options are made for cuddlers. Service is excellent, and not down your throat. Dessert is classic and reasonably priced (compared to other dessert spots in town, that is). The coffee, though, is peculiarly expensive. Our vanilla creme brulee was 6.50 and, with two coffees, our total bill was 12.00. Hmm... Pros: service, atmosphere, value Cons: expensive coffee, jazz musicians don't stay all day! more

A few hiccups on a way to a great stay! 8/6/2006

We went to stay at the Heathman hotel for our honeymoon and there were a few hiccups. We got there and our room was not ready so we went and walked downtown, which is always great, and got coffee at Starbucks. After getting up at 4:30 am to get my hair done, I needed the caffeine. We went back to the hotel and the room was still not ready so we went to the bar and enjoyed great cocktails. Finally our room was ready but unfortunately it was not the one we booked. Things finally got resolved and we had the wonderful Renaissance Room. I did go on the website to report the mishaps and then sent them a letter. Not only did we get a letter but we also got an e-mail expressing their apologies. We will definitely stay there again. Pros: Nice Room more

Food great, service wonderful, but far too noisy. 7/27/2006

We had a nice Halibut dish, with an olive tampenade, with some veggies in sauce. Was supposed to have baby artichokes, but we got one tough ""adult"" choke 1/4 between us. Otherwise the food at the Heathman was great. A very interesting tasty cold boysenberry soup.\r The salad with sheeps cheese was interesting, the lettuce was a bit wilty.\r The onion soup I had was good, but they used a lot of small ""salad"" croutons, instead of one wafer of toasted bread.\r \r The waitress and the rest of the staff were very attentive, without smothering. We ran our waitress around with questions on dishes, and when she didn't know, she went and found out.\r \r My biggest complaint was the open ceilings and hard surfaces. No sound baffles, or any way to cut the noise from the bar, which was also part of the large, rectangular space. This might be OK for some, but the very loud, very drunk woman in the bar area made it so my wife and I could not hear each other well. We we at a table for 2, and we were at least 30ft from the lady.\r \r As an aside about the Heathman Hotel, the valet parking is suggested, at about $12. But the valet didn't help my semi-disabled wife with her car door, and didn't suggest the easiest route for her to walk into the restaurant.\r Pros: Good food, great service Cons: Very noisy. more

Fantastic Fare 6/2/2006

The Heathman's restraunt and bar are fantastic... the staff are friendly, well informed, and helpful. The food is great though the portions are smaller than I'd like, but that means that you can sample a couple appetizers before your meal and not feel over full after you're done. The seard Ahi Tuna is superb. The Drinks are great and not weak like those found in other places. Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere Cons: Parking, Expensive more

Very Pleased 4/16/2006

A few nights after Thanksgiving we'd attended the Oregon Symphony with the new conductor- he was great. Afterwards we decided to walk through to the Heathman and grab a late supper and drinks. I hadn't been in over a year and was truly surprised with how great it was. The food was excellent and the service fantastic. We had a great time and got 11 people seated in almost no time at all. A bit pricey, but we did sample a big array of the appetizers and everyone loved the bread pudding- truly outstanding. I look forward to more evingins of the Symphony if we end up at the Heathman! more

The Best in Portland 3/29/2006

My daughter and I just returned from a two night stay at the Heathman. Our room was a nice size, considering we had two double beds, the restaurant was exceptional and the staff was extremely helpul. You are within walking distance of shopping, the art museum, and fine restaurants. The public transportion is very easy to use. Once we arrived we never got back into our car until we left! more

Outstanding 3/19/2006

After many dining experiences...breakfast,lunch and dinner....we have only had one poor server experience.....we just asked to not be seated in her station and all was well from then on.We love the Heathman experience and will continue to return often. Pros: Food and $$$, Value, service Cons: Parking/issue more

Great Place, resonable price 2/16/2006

Where I take guests because I am sure that the food and service will be great. Love having no pressure to leave because we have a reservation coming. Listed as $$$, I would say more $$. Four for brunch with drinks, dessert, and tip for less than $100. My wife loves their eggs benedict (any of many styles), I the dungenes crab and cheese omlete. The lamb (in season) is excellent. Pros: Food, Service, Abiance Cons: Parking more

Sunday Breakfast-fabulous! 1/13/2006

My husband and I went for Sunday breakfast, what a treat! The waitstaff were friendly, with just the perfect mix of being there and not in the way. The food was excellent and we would defiinitely go back. Well done in Portland! more

Love the Heathman 11/16/2005

Every time I come to the Heathman, my palate is delighted throughout the entire time I am there. My friends are impressed as we dine on incredibly inventive (and delicious)food, great service and what an extensive wine selection! Thanks again the cheers to the Heathman restaurant. Pros: menu, wine, stmosphere to impress more

niice 11/9/2005

This is a great, hip hotel in Portland. The room we stayed in definitely was not big, but it was pretty comfortable and clean. Our bed was really comfortable. The bathroom wasn't bad but it was small. The staff was nice and helpful. The hotel overall is pretty clean and quiet. more

Rude Staff and Not Worth the Money 10/16/2005

I have been here several times over several years, and each time I try to remind myself NOT to come back (writing this review should seal the deal!)--the food is OK, but not worth the prices, the staff has repeatedly been inattentive and on more than one occasion I've had a surly wait-person. More than once I have left disappointed. Recently, I brought my 3 year old daughter (who is extremely quiet and well-behaved in restaurants) and before we were even seated the hostess ushered us into the ""cafe"" section and made us feel like second-class citizens. For a restaurant that charges so much, the experience should be pleasant. I would go to any equivalent restaurant downtown rather than visit the Heathman again. Pros: good crabcakes Cons: waitstaff/hostess, noisy more

Amazing Botique Style Hotel 10/16/2005

From start to finish everything was amazing. The service is as good if not better than any hotel I have ever stayed at. Rooms are smaller than I am used to but the amenities, lots of great movies, free peets coffee and tea, the wonderful turn down crew are well worth the lack of space. The concierge service is super knowledgable and each had special input to give to each and ever question we threw at them. Our entire trip went better because we ended here and it left such a lasting impression. To friends and people I meet on the street I ALWAYS recommend The Heathman. If you are looking for a great experience choose this hotel. The only negative I can think of is they are always full so it is hard to get a last min reservation. If you can get a parlor room, go for it Pros: Service, Concierge, Amenities Cons: Always full, need to plan advance, smaller rooms more

Often Overlooked by Portland Locals 8/20/2005

After meeting the Food and Beverage manager at Taste of the Nation in Utah, I had to visit this place. When I asked my Portland friends to join me, they were reluctant because the Heathman was an ""old"" place not the newest and hippest happening. Well they were surprised and I was both pleased and impressed. It reminded me that a newcomer will venture where locals fear to tread and not to be swayed by the buzz. Pros: Elegant and pleasant, Excellent wine list, Great Cuisine more

Good but not great 8/15/2005

Our busboy was more attentive than our lazy server, who did nothing more than take our orders and bring our food, despite her utter lack of tables. Go there for the food, not for the service. Excellent hanger steak, albacore tuna, and scallops. Appetizers were good, but not at the level of the entrees. Desserts were a dissapointment. Mediocre sorbets (bad texture, acceptable flavor), average flourless chocolate cake, but good raspberry napoleon. The wine list had some good selections but looked like my kid's highschool binder (the pages were actually falling out and one of them was an atrocious hot pink). Pros: some excellent food, Hanger steak Cons: service, desserts more
