That's odd. 8/9/2010

My experience at the galaxy was awesome. I have been in on several different nights and met most of the staff, they seem genuine. I noticed a large, eclectic group of people everytime I go there and noone is turned away because of how they look. I think people are crazy to badmouth the staff at the galaxy. I recomend it to everyone. Give the girls a chance. more

Worst Cheaseburger I Have Ever Had... 8/20/2009

I actually like this place. Everyone knows the owner is a punk and he makes his staff's lives miserable...but the truth is that this place is fine. However, I did eat their cheeseburger tonight...and I feel like I swallowed a slippery frog. I can feel this frog kicking and clawing away inside my stomach!! I only bought it because it was cheap, but the truth is that this was the worst cheeseburger ever grilled up in the history of existence of FOOD!! I saw they got Dirty Dinning'd on FoxNews...and it shows. If you go there have fun, tip the DJ, and remember...never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER...eat their hideous cheeseburger. It has taken years off of my life. I would rather be addicted to nicotene than even consider eating their cheeseburger again. Pros: Actually a cool spot, good staff. Cons: Lord have mercy their cheeseburger was BAD... more

Rude Staff 12/2/2008

I too found staff to be incredibly rude, especially toward those who may dress/look different than their other regulars- A shame, as I initally thought the place looked cool and the chinese food looked tasty. Pros: Rude, discriminating staff Cons: Salt water fish tank more

The Staff there is a snobby clique and the regular customers who sit at the bar are real heartless! 5/22/2008

AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!!! The bartenders that work there do care about their customers. The chicken strips taste lie thing onion rings with no meat and the KJs there put their friends first over anyone else! The type of people who work there are of the character that if you became their friend but you had a problem with one of their regular friends even if the regular friend initiated hostility towards you they would ignore you and never respond to your e-mails even if you were in the right and logical. The management there allows the ""IN"" regulars to diss you publicly on their MySpace page! They are truly a clique that needs to be broken up. I was a customer there for 11 years and when I first went there in the mid-1990s they had staff with big hearts (Deborah), geniune smiles and would have your drink ready for you before you sat down. Those were the good ol' days. Cons: Bartenders, KJs and their regulars have horrible attitudes! more

Best American-Chinese place in PDX! 4/22/2008

And they have karaoke! I love this place, the bar is great, the food is good (really great when you have been drinking) and they have a great karaoke DJ. I love to come to this place after seeing a show at Doug Fir. Pros: Great Food, Freindly family staff, Karaoke Cons: Parking more

Good KJ, good rotation, fun crowd on weekends, just meh on the food 3/5/2008

The reviews referencing a female KJ are old. The KJ there now is a man, a very nice one. They use the rotation method to keep everyone circulating and I've been able to sing as many songs as I wanted each time I've gone. Friday and Saturday nights are definitely the busiest, with the bigger crowds really going crazy in support of the singers (call and response lines, singing along, dancing etc.) It's a really fun time on the busy nights and a really good opportunity to sing A LOT on the slow nights. Food is just OK. Waitresses are great! We've been back twice and we're already ""regulars."" Enjoy! Pros: Great song selection, good KJ, fair rotation, supportive crowd on busy nights, lots of chances to sing on slow nights Cons: Food. Smoke. more

Quit whining, people... 1/20/2008

I enjoyed The Galaxy. I've only been there once, and it was on a Saturday night. It was fairly busy, but we were able to get a table up front, and we had an attentive waitress. I sing karaoke 4-5 nights per week at various bars around town, and I was actually quite impressed with the KJ at galaxy- so I don't know what you guys are complaining about! While the bar was full, my 3 friends and I were able to sing 3 songs EACH, and we got there after 10. We did not tip the KJ more than a buck or two at the end of the night, so it wasn't like we ""bribed"" her. FYI-on a Friday/Saturday night, you can plan on waiting 1-2, even 3 hours to sing a song at ANY karaoke bar... not just Galaxy. Galaxy also has an excellent song selection, and the crowd was fun and upbeat. Pros: Great song selection, nice crowd, good KJ Cons: atmosphere was kinda blah more

Galaxy - E. Burnside 12/23/2007

I highly advise out-of-towners that like to sing kareoke to stay away from this bar. The KJ has no rotation...If you show up at midnight and tip her a $20....she'll take your money....but she probably wont let you sing (because there are ""too many singers in front of you - aka - the 20 people who have already sang, but didn't tip because they are her regulars and she will put them ahead of you regardless"" ) ...she'll pocket your tip and let someone who has already sang 3 or 4 times go up before you...If I was a regular there, I'd be there every weeekend becauase I'd be able to sing. I worked in the service industry for 10 years before owning my succesful bar (out of town - Eugene) and I will tell you that we thrive on our regulars..but we ALWAYS give the newbies a spot...ESPECIALLY when they take care of our our KJ and / or bartenders (In this review, I'm not talking about the KJ alone, the bartenders were unfriendly, slow, and poured extrodinarily weak drinks)...we take care of customers new and old...and The Galaxty does not. If you like kareoke, when you're only in town for the holidays...this is NOT the bar for you...even if you waste your money tipping the KJ, she wont put you up...I strongly advise you to look into other spots...Chopsticks is awesome...and they have a great rotation (P.S..Galaxy is the ONLY kareoke bar that I've EVER heard of that doesn't have a rotation) that they're regulars agree with, because everyone gets a chance to sing...especially with tipping, but either way..you'll get you're chance..same with Suki's on 4th...I love regulars, don't get me wrong...but I've learned that if a bar wants to strive, you let everybody enjoy themselves...take care of those that take care of you...I lived in Portland for many, many years, and I would NEVER, never ever reccomend this bar... Pros: You might be able to find a seat - maybe Cons: Weak drinks, you wont be able to sing if after midnight, taking care of staff does NOTHING for the service yopu more

I AM NEVER GOING BACK!!! 12/1/2007

I went to the Galaxy for my birthday with a big group of people. The place was dead until we go there. We submitted our requests for karaoke. I waited TWO HOURS and never got to sing the song I requested. When we asked the DJ, he informed me that because I had danced and sang into the microphone on someone else's song, my name went to the bottom of the list - yes he actually reprimanded me for having a good time! You could tell that the DJ really enjoyed his ""position of power."" The only good thing I can say about The Galaxy is that it is across the street from the Doug Fir. IF YOU AND YOUR GROUP OF FRIENDS ARE IN THE MOOD FOR A FUN NIGHT OF KARAOKE DO NOT GO TO THE GALAXY OR YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED!!! more

Galaxy 10/25/2007

I went there for lunch, and found that the food was decent for americanized chinese food. The prices are fair for a ton of food. If you are looking for cost per quantity, this is the place. It looks as though it could be a pretty fun place to karaoke if you are into that sort of thing. I didn't give it a five because of the dive bar atmosphere it had, and it didn't give the impression that it was trying for a dive bar atmosphere as opposed to like the Sandy Hut or the Tillicum of old. more

So many other places are So much better 5/19/2007

I've been to the Galaxy twice. Second time I was smart enough not to eat the food. I would say my main complaint is the speed, or lack of, service. I've been there when it is packed and I've been there when it is average (some booths were empty and no one was standing to get a spot.) Both times meant there was about 20+ minute wait to get service. Worse is that each server has a specific table and if you get a slow one everyone around you will be served way ahead of you. The last time our server spent more time refilling water glases than taking drink orders. The food is low on the list of why people go there and it shows. I had sweet and sour...something. The meat was still cold inside and the corn syrup sauce on the outside was room temp. If you are fond of Chinese-sish food and karaoke I would reccomend Chopsticks or anything really. Pros: Location. Just enough skeeziness in an increasingly swanky neighborhood. Cons: Super slow service in an neighborhood full of better bars. more

Fun place 11/22/2006

The Galaxy is a pretty fun place. I went with a large group of people to just hang out and drink and do some karaoke. Their daiquiris and well drinks are pretty good and the our waitress was very nice and attentive. Their karaoke selections are pretty good. After a few drinks and some encouragement by my friends..i sang a song...pretty badly I might add. However, the crowd was pretty nice..and they really got into some of the songs. I really liked this karaoke bar. Pros: good karaoke bar, good crowd of people, good chicken strips and drinks Cons: smokey more

check this place out!!! 4/9/2006

Not your everyday karaoke joint. A great place to sing 7 nights a week. What's cool about this joint is anybody and everybody comes in and sings their heart out. Sometimes it's cool just as a spectator sport. Nice staff, great Chinese food, and monster burgers. Another well known fact about the galaxy, THEY CARD EVERYBODY, SO BRING YOUR ID. They also have a great karaoke policy-NO BRIBES. first come first served. love it! Anyway, check it out for yourself. If you wanna get a chance to sing more than twice, better come during the week. Still busy, but not wall to wall. thanks for reading! Pros: good prices w/specias, good drinks!, karaoke 7 nights Cons: time for carpet, still smoking more

Good karaoke if you are not intimidated 5/25/2002

I can't really review the restaurant, as my visit was purely for the bar and karaoke. The drinks were passable but not spectacular. Their karaoke system is very good, their selection of songs is large, and the KJ was great. However, if you're new to karaoke (as I am) you might find yourself intimidated by the skill level of some of the performers. My friends and I were there on a Saturday night and the place was hopping, and we ended up heading to a smaller bar with a lower average singing ability. :-) more
