The Good, the Bad & the Ugly 6/6/2011

The Firm is currently housed in an old warehouse, and is located somewhat off the beaten path. Although I 've never taken classes there (spinning, aerobics, yoga, and so on), I've heard nothing but raves about them, and there are devotees who practically live at the place. \r \r However, I do like to work out with weights and use cardio machines, and in this area The Firm is sorely lacking. A lot of the weight equipment was replaced a few years ago, but it's still fairly inadequate. There is no squat cage in the main gym; nowhere to do deadlifts, apart from a Smith machine. There used to more machines for back and shoulders, but they were removed. It seems as though a couple of treadmills are always out of order. Plus, there are usually a lot of dust bunnies floating around and, overall, the place doesn't seem clean. The steam room has been out of order for years, and the shower room often smells (and looks) kinda funky. Out of town visitors beware: a day pass will cost you $25, which is outrageous - especially if all you want to do is use the gym. Some of the people at the front desk are friendly and helpful, especially on Saturday afternoons, but many of them act as though they couldn't care less about the clientele.\r \r Pros: The classes, the people who takes the classes\r \r Cons: The gym, the locker room\r \r You could do worse than The Firm, I suppose - e.g., Balley's - but you can find nicer, better-equipped gyms in the area. more

Best fitness classes ever! 9/12/2009

The Firm does have the best fitness classes in town with excellent, caring, personable fun instructors...! The classes range from Spinning, aerobics (circuit, striptease, funk, muscle training, etc), pilates, yoga, bag boxing, and even russian kettleball! I haven't tried boxing or kettleball yet, but I am sure it is as effective, fun and good as the rest... I am a regular now at SPINNING, YOGA, and Pilates at the firm. Before the FIRM, I use to take Yoga at one of the top Yoga places in the city...and I was pleasantly surprised that the Firm offers yoga every weekday, with excellent instructors also...so I don't need to go to two different places for my fitness : ) So for me, joining the FIRM was an excellent choice. I am not much into gym training, but I have used their gym facility and it has top notch equiptment, too! The staff is always friendly and very nice. It's ALWAYS a GREAT DAY at the FIRM and I am very proud to be a member! Pros: Best fitness classes and excellent caring instructors Cons: NONE more

mixed review 7/13/2009

i've been a member for a few years and suddenly found that the gym's/studio's already reduced availability was suddenly reduced/changed even further-without any notice! they now close at 9 pm weeknights, 5 on saturday and 3 on sundays. this was especially irritating and i feel, unfair given that the contract you sign requires members to give a 2 month notice when you decide you'd like to end your membership... Pros: knowledgable staff, many wonderful people/staff Cons: very expensive, interesting hours, very loud music more

Biggest rip off in Minneapolis!!! 3/10/2009

The Firm charges HUGE prices for completely sub-par trainers in a dirty studio. Save your money (and your dignity) and work out somewhere else. I paid TOP dollar to work out with a personal trainer at the Firm, only to have him lean up against the wall and drink a cup of coffee while I worked out completely on my own. Their classes are great, no doubt, but for the money they're charging they should be and, let's face it, in Minneapolis, there are a lot of good classes around. There is no need to pay what the Firm is charging. Pros: spin classes are really fun and challenging, free parking Cons: High prices, Terrible personal trainers, snotty people more

Best Spin Classes EVER! 7/21/2008

I just finished my free week membership and this gym has the BEST group fitness classes I have ever taken. I actually drove 35 minutes there and 35 minutes back home twice a day to take the classes offered there. I would never do that if the classes weren't worth it. Pros: Parking, High Energy, Good Owners more

Hardcore and FUN 3/11/2008

Just an FYI, the membership is now $99 a month, not $86 as listed above. That is the only downside to The Firm. It is EXPENSIVE. \r However, I truly believe it is the best gym in town. I've belonged to all of them: Lifetime, YWCA, YMCA, etc. and The Firm is above and beyond all of them. The classes are hard, be warned. But the instructors are super nice and fun, and won't make you feel bad if you can't keep up. They play great dance music at high decibels, which makes you feel like you are just dancing and having fun rather than working out. If you are looking for intense classes, with great instructors, and high energy dance music, then join The Firm. If you want something more mellow and low impact, this is not the gym for you. more

Best classes 11/8/2007

The Firm has the best fitness classes in town! The Firm is innovative, energetic, and inspiring. The Firm always has new ideas to keep me fit and wanting more. I recommend everyone to try a class or use the gym, and see the beautiful brand new equipment that overlooks the Minneapolis skyline with an energy in the place that helps me workout. The Firm has excellent customer service with a variety of services. Pros: Excellent customer service, best Personal Trainers, best fitness classes ever! more

good work-outs 11/4/2007

yes, it is on the expensive side but the classes and the machines and most of the staffers are A+. the downside would be the too loud music and availability of lower impact/high energy classes and maybe something for ""oldtimers"" 45+. personal trainers are fabulous and knowledgeable and i'd recommend this to anyone looking for a swell place to work it out! Pros: staff, classes, personal training, machines, members Cons: loud music, often seems youth focused, closes early, on the expensive side more

Loud and rude! 10/22/2007

The Firm used to be a great place to work out before common courtesy took a dive with the influx of new clients and staff. Some clients feel entitled to double park in the lot to (ironically) shorten their walks to aerobics classes. Some of the staff blast their head banging music at deafening levels; and often several different selections are playing at the same time. Although outmoded and broken equipment was recently replaced with new machines, the men's sauna hasn't worked in years. This place used to be fun but now it's just overpriced with an attitude. Lately, going there is giving me a headache. Pros: hip and trendy Cons: loud, expensive, rude more

Best harcore workout in the country! 1/23/2007

I've worked out at many places throughout the country and the Firm is by far the most amazing! I was lucky enough to live in Minneapolis for a time and I never looked so good as when I was a regular at the Firm. The classes are intense, they turn down the lights and turn up the music. Keep up with the instructors and I guarantee you will look as hard bodied in no time. The staff is extremely friendly and the gym is free of pomp and circumstance. However, no amenity is skipped. There are massage therapists, personal trainers, a juice bar, tanning, saunas, etc. Have a great day at the Firm! Pros: parking, ambiance, friendly, high energy, educated staff more

Great Place to work ou 8/5/2005

I travel a lot for business and I am frequently in Minneapolis. Inevitably, I find myself on a search for a good place to work out. Without question the Firm is one of the best places I have been. It's not a lot of wasted glitz and glam but a comfortable gym with updated equipment and extremely friendly staff. They offer towel service, a juice bar and a wide range of classes. It has a great view of the downtown skyline. I like it so much that I decided to join even though I don't live in Minneapolis. I make it a point to work out here when in town. more

Workout worth every dollar 1/4/2003

Aerobic and kickboxing classes are the best anywhere! I've never worked so hard during aerobics in my life. Instructors have enthusiasm and innovation that motivates and sometimes entertains - they are attentive to students! The staff exude energy. And, while you're butt will drag after a 75-minute class, your metabolism will thank you! Pros: fun, challenging, good value Cons: only one location more
