great selection but rude 6/15/2006

If you don't want to brave the garment district, this is the next best thing. The selection is amazing and the employees know everything they have, but it wouldn't kill them to be a little nicer, they act like they're doing you a favor. I only go there if it's an emergency, since their prices are high. more

Incredible selection, snooty service 12/20/2005

Whoever thought buttons could be so interesting? This incredibly stocked store is a treasure trove of every kind of button imaginable - lots of beautifully crafted buttons here, the best kind of its store for a seamstress looking to make a one of a kind garment. It's also a great place to find buttons in order to update the look on a jacket. If you don't know a lot about their products the help can be kind of snooty, which is off-putting. But ignore that and this is a great store, the kind that makes New York so special more

Tiny store with big selection. 12/9/2005

What a charming little store full of ordinary and very extraordinary buttons! Well organized and they let you serve yourself, so you can pick out the very best buttons in the box. Nothing cheap or cheesy here, although they have a few well-made tacky choices. But lots of classics, arty buttons, lots of fine European buttons, big selection of brass, horn, colors. They also carry some nice antique buttons. Helpful staff, too. more

When you want to Spruce up an older outfit think Buttons 8/30/2005

This store has an endless inventory of all kinds of buttons - big and small, colorful and tame, for men women and children although it is more fun to mix it up and just chose what you like. If you are into crafts, these unique bottons can make your project. If you have a favorite sweater or jacket but want to update it a bit and get funky, think about changing the buttons for a new look. It's the 'little' things that make the difference, and this small store is really fun to go through. The staff is also passionate about their inventory, so give then an idea of what you may have in mind, and see what you can uncover! more

Tender Buttons 8/16/2005

This adorable little store is filled from floor to ceiling with thousands of buttons. Prices range from 50 cents for simple white buttons to hundreds of dollars for gorgeous antique gold buttons, some inlaid with semi-precious stones. Customers flock to the store to find replacements for missing buttons. Others are looking for the perfect button to update an existing blouse or to make that discount-store jacket look like haute couture. And now that cufflinks are all the rage again, you might consider creating inexpensive, one-of-a-kind cufflinks using your choice of their decorative buttons. The staff will gladly assemble them for you. more

The best button store around 10/15/2004

New York manages to be the harbinger of some many unusual niche stores. Tender Buttons is no exception. Around for almost 50 years, it specializes in high quality, handcrafted, imported buttons. The workmanship is superb, the selection extensive, but the prices high. To replace the buttons on a dress shirt with pretty mother of pearl ones, expect to drop between $10-20. Leather buttons for a jacket come in at around $15. more
