Hand Shaved Noodles with Beef = Yummy! 12/7/2006

Their hand-shaved noodles are freshly made and combined with very tender beef and vegetables in a light soy-based sauce. I have yet to try the green hand-shaved noodles, but they are next on my list. more

Park near Uwajimaya if you are willing to walk... 10/17/2006

I know this is a little outdated, but I thought I'd respond anyway, for future reference. I have begun parking near Uwajimaya and walking down to Safeco field -- it's a little bit of a walk, but I enjoy stretching my legs before and after the game, and the parking is usually a lot easier to find. On a different note: I would also recommend stopping into Shanghai Gardens for dinner before or after the game -- the most delicious Chinese food in the city, I think. My boyfriend and I are regular customers of the restuarant -- we even have a regular order. My favorites on the menu include their hand-shaven barley green noodles (I prefer the beef or chicken chow mein), the moo-shoo pork (I don't think I'm spelling that right), their beef with broccoli, the pea vines (a must try if you've never had them), and the mushroom soup, although everything is great. I especially like the fact that, if you stop by the restuarant late in the day, the kitchen and wait staff sit and enjoy dinner that they prepared in the kitchen together -- if the staff eats the food, too, it has to be good! more

Shanghai Gardens in the ID 8/12/2006

I have been looking for a place to review this establishment, and looks like this is the best one. Let me start by saying i LIVE in Chinatown, so I have the pleasure of about 30 eateries of various Asian cusines within 3 blocks of my condo. Overwhelmingly I will return to this busy and efficient little gem. SG is a rare mix of efficiency and good food. Now, I will say that my friends and I look forward to outings to SG with a mix of glee and gluttony that breeds a fair amount of guilt post consumption. The amount of food that my 95 pound little friend consumes in one sitting there is remarkable. We order the same thing almost every time: *Sauteed Pea Vines (which sound odd, but my goodness they are deeeeellllicious!) *Salt and Pepper Scallops (double order) *Hand Shaved Noodles (you have a choice between *Barley Green or traditional White; we always order white) with Chicken or shrimp. These are little pieces of heaven. *Crispy Orange Beef (watch out for the little peppars mixed in!) If you have more than 6 people its a good idea to call ahead and make a reservation. They move quickly there, food comes out as it is made, and hardly ever all at once. Its remarkable how fast they get it to you even on busy nights. The staff is friendly but very efficient so they dont stand around and chat. It is always crowded. I have seen celebrities, sports stars, newscasters and locals eating right next to neighborhood regulars and the staff opts to coook and eat a group meal around 9:00 p.m. or later and they eat the same things that we order, so they must be pretty good! The menu is HUGE! I am always trying to add a couple people to our group so they will try something new without my having to give up my basic faves. Over all its fantastic. Its my midweek pick me up, special occasion, I am ravenous, just because or too lazy to cook stand by. I tip well here. a triple order of everything for 8 people with 2 rounds of beer and rice came to about $190.00, so its not a "cheap eats" place, but the portions are very generous and each plate can easily feed 2-3 people if your not pigs like myself and my gang. =) more

All Time Favorite Chinese Restaurant 3/28/2006

Oh Shanghai Garden, why must you be so delicious? The green beans, the pea vines, the pan fried tofu with chef's special sauce....This restaurant is consistently delicious. It can get pretty busy but it is definitely worth the wait. No super sweet sauces, every dish has a unique and delicious taste. My recommendation is to try something new each visit...I guarantee you'll find some new favorites. more

MMM barley green hand shaven noodle 12/20/2005

I agree with Josh H, Shanghai Garden is my favorite and all my "foodie" friends (including Loretta who is Chinese from NYC) like it the best. The have a green bean dish that is great, and of course the barley green hand shaven noodles. The menu is extensive and confusing.. every possible permutation of ingredient combo is listed. There is another good chinese place in Factoria, in a strip mall on the east side of the main drag.. across from the mall. Can't remember the name, my friend conversed with the waitress in chinese and ordered us some tasty food. more

Ever try hand crafted Chinese barley noodles 12/19/2005

Everyone will have their own opinion about their favorite Chinese restaurant. This is one of mine. The phone number, I believe, is not as listed above but is 625 1688. This place is across the street from the Uwajimaya store (another destination in and of itself) in the ID. It is not fancy, is frequented by many Asians (always a good sign), and has a wide and wonderful menu selection. The barley noodle dishes are particularly unusual and tasty. You can make it an exotic day or night of it by combining a trip to Uwajimaya with a dinner or lunch at the Shanghai. more

Fantastic Chinese Food 12/19/2005

I don't pretend to be an expert on what's "authentic", but this place is damn good. Easily my favorite chinese food in Seattle. The hand-shaved noodles are their signature dish, but my experience has been that you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The soups are great, as are the noodle dishes, vegetables and tofu. Sometimes there's a bit of a wait, but it's always well worth it. more

Looking for Good Chinese 12/14/2005

I really like this place. Good tasty Chinese food. more

Great Chinese in the International District! 12/7/2005

We eat here quite frequently. We have ordered take out on a Saturday night and it was superb! The place was bustling as usual but each dish we ordered tasted unique and fresh. We love the hand-shaven barley green noodles and the fact that you can get brown rice here if you're feeling like you need a little healthier option! The food comes out really fast but it is made to order. The service can be a little rushed as they turn over tables quite quickly. more

Green noodles 10/20/2005

Everyone always talks about the green noodles here. Some good, some bad, but I have to say I have been happy with the overall green noodle phenomenon. (and basically everything else I have gotten at the Shanghai Garden.) Their Tofu dishes are as tasty as their meat based dishes, and its a large, accomodating restaraunt that is typically pretty busy. I haven't really ever had a hard time getting a seat there though, and service is always good, so that's a plus in my book. There are likely more authentic places in the ID to get Chinese food, but I always enjoy this place. more

Peking Duck 10/11/2005

My old roommate and I went on a quest, throughout Seattle and the Eastside, for the best Peking Duck in Seattle, and we found it at Shanghai Garden. After this we had it at least once every six months. Superb, as is the pan fried bean curd, and any of the fruit flavored beef, chicken, or shrimp dishes. Actually anything. My favorite Chinese restaurant. more

Almost always a winner! 9/14/2005

I was so lucky to have been introduced to this place right after a moved here over 6 years ago. It is still my favorite Chinese restraunt! Go for the pea vines, the green barley shaved noodles, and the chefs sauce on tofu. The mushu pork was very salty once, and the chicken with peanuts had a TON too many peanuts! more

Homemade delights 8/21/2005

Justifiably known for their hand-shaven noodles, Shanghai Garden has perfected this simple staple. Chewy, tender, and super-fresh (not to mention available in barley green as well), these morsels are perfect. With ample servers and a surprisingly efficient kitchen, you will receive each dish as it is prepared; at its freshest, really. more

The Yummiest 8/18/2005

Shanghai Garden is easily my favorite Chinese restaurant in Seattle. It is great because you can zip down there during a lunch hour (via bus) or go for a regular dinner. Recently we've taken to getting the hand shaven noodles to go and bringing them home for a picnic. They are DELICIOUS! This restaurant gets all the stars in my book :) more

Barley Green Noodles!!! 7/15/2005

I highly recommend the Barley Green Noodles with Chicken. They are hand shaven noodles in a very light sauce with carrots. Very yummy and good for you! I have tried a few other things there and they have been okay. My sister who lives in the Mid West calls it "Strange Chinese Food". It definitely isn't Americanized if that is what you are looking for. You have to ask for a fork and sugar if you want it in your tea. more

A good chinese place in Seattle! 10/1/2004

Since seattle has few good chinese places this is a good place to visit if you are looking for some tasty chinese. Their fresh noodles are great! more

Best Chinese joint in the ID 9/13/2004

I'm sure there are others, but this one serves the best/fastest/tastiest meals around. The sizzling rice soup is delish, the shaven noodles are worth the trip alone and I've had a few great moo-shoo veggies. more

Chinese with a healthy flair 9/13/2004

Vegetable potstickers, sauted pea vines, hand shaved barley noodles, high protein brown fried rice... these are just a few of the items on their menu. Food is tasty and well prepared. more
