I love this place! 2/26/2009

I don't eat raw fish at all but strangely enough they have a veggie roll the New York roll, and it is great. We are always served fast and we go here so often they even know what we're going to order before we open our mouths. The wait staff are friendly and very courteous and the owners are hilarious and nice. We didn't go in for a year because we had moved and when we came back it was like we never left they still remembered our orders and asked us how we were doing. Bento boxes are great and affordable anyone who gives this place below 4 stars is out of their mind and has no understanding of food. Pros: good food, nice people. Cons: a little small- can get annoying when the ""saki bomb"" crowd is dining at the same time you are. more

Favorite Sushi 2/9/2009

This is my most favorite sushi spot in Nashville. Their salads and miso soup are really good, not to mention the sushi rolls. The rolls are also a pretty good size. When you're given your check, they always give you a few Raisinettes to munch on. Unfortunately, I think this place is closed now. Sad. more

Great sushi 9/4/2008

Great sushi, very good prices, and fast delivery! Highly recommend. One of the only delivery options for sushi in Nashville. Pros: great price, very fresh more

Get what you pay for 5/6/2008

I'm not sure where others have eaten sushi in the past, possibly at Chinese buffet restaurants, but as some one who has enjoyed Sushi on the coast, this place was a joke. I was impressed with the wait staff, very friendly and accomodating. But, the inexpensive lunch special was too good to be true. I mean, honestly, a bento box for about $6?? I should have known better. \r The rolls can be best described as bad. Poorly presented and far from fresh. The Philly roll had melted philly cheese, and lacked the main ingredients in a philly roll, hence the cheap deal. You could tell most of the ingredients were a day old or so and had been stored. The salmon sushi wasnt fresh, I dare say it was ""bad"" as in: expired. It wasnt the correct color or texture for sushi grade fish. I wouldnt eat it. The ginger dressing was bitter and also tasted ""old"". The chicken was overcooked and the dessert orange was old as well. The experience was awful. The wait staff, again, was very courteous and the iced tea was fresh and my glass was kept full, but that was the only highlight of my meal here. I will never eat here again and can hardly understand why others were so impressed, I can only assume I either visited on a bad day or the others havent truly experienced quality Japanese sushi. \r Do not reccommend. Pros: Friendly waitress and hostess Cons: The food is awful more

Great food, Great service. 3/22/2008

My girlfriend and I go here occasionally when we need a japanese food fix. The restaurant is small, and the atmosphere is very cozy. The food is excellent. We always order Bento boxes. I love the teriyaki chicken, and she loves teriyaki shrimp. Its a great value too... 2 can eat here for less than $20. This compares to Goten's which has a great ambience, but the food (from the menu, I havent had the hibachi) isnt so great. Last time we went here, they gave my girlfriend and I, each a loaf of bread free! As other reviewers have mentioned the service is quick and efficient as well. They also say goodbye to you when you leave, now thats customer service. Pros: Great value, Great food, and great service. Cons: parking can be troublesome on busy nights. more

I miss their food SO MUCH! 1/3/2008

I used to work nearby, and my friends and I would head to Taste of Tokyo for lunch at LEAST once a month, usually more. Their teriyaki sauce is the best I've ever had, and I've had a LOT. The White Cloud Rainbow roll is my favorite, second only to the Vandy Roll. The parking is terrible, of course, but that's The Village for you. The ladies are very ""attentive,"" just get used to it! It's a small place, so they try to get you in and out quickly, which is understandable. Anyway, I moved to another job four months ago, and I CRAVE ToT daily! Want a good date night? Take her to ToT for a bento box, then grab some lattes at Fido's before heading to a movie at the Green Hills theater. Ah, perfection. Pros: All the food is excellent, price is great, service FAST and FRIENDLY! Cons: Location: parking can be difficult more

Incredible service 12/23/2007

I cannot emphasize how great the service and food is at Taste of Tokyo. I wholeheartedly agree with all the positive reviews on this restaurant. To illustrate my point: This is the only wait staff that my husband and I bought a present for. We receive a welcome there like we are in their home (and we only go there, maybe, once a week for the last year). \r \r But, the negative reviews surprise me. Yes, they do things a little differently (such as come back to the table often until you order-that is their way of giving good service and to make you not feel neglected. They are not trying to annoy you. They ALWAYS do their best to give everyone the best service possible. \r \r And to the person who had his friend translate the Japanese that they were saying about you: either you, or your friend, is lying. First of all, they are so kind, i doubt that that would happen. Secondly, although, they adeptly prepare Japanese cuisine with all the appearances that they would be native to Japan---THEY SPEAK CHINESE! They are from Shanghai. So any ""translation"" is an obvious fabrication on someone's part. Please do not put your own prejudices off on such warm and kind people. \r Pros: Service! Taste! Price! Cons: Parking (but the experience is well worth it!) more

Less than all that. 10/10/2007

My fiance and I met a friend of mine for dinner there last night. Upon sitting down we were immediately asked to order while the menus were given to us. We declined and ordered our drinks. The waitress came back about every 45 seconds to see if we were ready. After sitting for three minutes and four requests, we ordered the bento boxes. The teriyaki pork was ok, the rice was soggy, and the crunchy shrimp rolls tasted like a mix of: shake 'n bake, raw chicken, and faux shrimp - not tasty. Halfway through the meal the waitress was trying to take our plates and drinks, even though we repeatedly said we weren't done with the teriyaki piece (again ok). Just overall a very weak sushi/Japanese restaurant. Pros: Location - in the middle of Hillsboro Village. Cons: Rushed Service / Awful Crunchy Shrimp Rolls more

Never had sushi before 9/27/2007

Taste of Tokyo provided me with my first sushi experience and now I am a sushi lover. We go there whenever we decide to venture to Hillsboro Village. The Bento Box is amazing. Terrific value and terrific service. The workers act like they are greeting family when you walk in the door and they make you feel even more like family when you leave. Go and ENJOY! Pros: food Cons: parking more

best sushi, best service, best prices ever! 9/1/2007

I'm a regular customer at this place, and they not only know me by name (as I do them), they often surprise me with a small sake on the house (I bring in as many new customers as I possibly can). The sushi is so amazing that I've never had anything else on the menu. The Ninza Roll may well be the single best food item I've ever had in 30 years of eating out, and the Belmont Roll satisfies like no other. I've tried every sushi place in the Nashville area, and though the high dollar places like Virago can certainly deliver, I keep coming back to Taste of Tokyo. \r \r If the service is above and beyond because I'm a regular customer, well that may be, but remember that I had to become a regular customer first, for other reasons -- namely the food. But despite the random complaints here, I've never had a long wait and I've never had anything less than friendly, detail-oriented service from warm, personable servers in more than 6 years of eating there. And we all love Lucy to pieces!\r \r I could live without the Jim Brickman CD on 'repeat', however. Fortunately, it's only playing about 75% of the times I've eaten there. The one legitimate complaint I've found in this forum isn't the restaurant's fault -- the parking situation leaves a bit to be desired, as one cramped parking lot serves 5 or 6 establishments.\r \r But don't let that impede your best sushi experience. The Ninza alone is worth walking two miles to the restaurant and sitting on tacks for an hour. It's that good. Pros: Ninza, Belmont, other specialty rolls -- incredible and satisfying. And the price is insanely inexpensive. Cons: The decor/ambience -- it's a glorious little hole in the wall for eating, not soaking in the ambience! more

Good sushi - dont be in a rush! 7/23/2007

Sushi is tasty and inexpensive. I always phone in the order and pick it up. Phone orders must be $15 + and even if you phone 20mins in advance you always have to wait another 15 when you get there. Women are really friendly! Pros: good cheap sushi Cons: long wait times, truck stop sushi more

Shocked at these reviews! 6/27/2007

I am so shocked about the various complaints about the service at Taste of Tokyo. The ladies that work there are the highlight of each visit. They are the most friendly and cute little Asian ladies! The food here is always up to my standards but best of all is that the prices are by far the cheapest for sushi in Nashville. I would highly recommend this quaint little place! Pros: Sweet ladies, Cheap food. more

The Most Uncomfortable Lunch I've Ever Had. 6/6/2007

It was the most uncomfortable lunch I've ever had. The food was a little less than okay, and the service was horrible. The staff stood behind the counter the entire time we ate and stared at us, they also bad mouthed us in Japanese(my best friend is from Japan, and translated everything they said to me. ) I guess the only plus side was that it was incredibly cheap. Pros: Price Cons: parking, food, sushi, and the staff is mean! more

Great! 3/31/2006

My husband and I visited Taste no to long ago and were very impressed. The sushi was great, as was the service. We did not feel rush, but rather relaxed (despited the second rate atmosphere). The food was presented in very beautifully on bamboo. Their fruit tea is wonderful, and we got plenty of free refills! Also, the price was perfect. We will definately be going back for more! more

LUCY is great and very friendly place 7/31/2005

GREAT place for the price/value. Good food and LUCY is very friendly. Fun place to eat. more

Not worth the value! 4/8/2005

I am a sushi snob - first and foremost, but I love a great value. What bums me out about Taste isn't the decor (who cares?) or the food (it's pretty good), it's the service. Friendly, perhaps - in a ""Hurry up and eat and get the hell out so I can fill this table again"" sort of way. I went in recently by myself at sat at the ""bar."" The waitress didn't bring a place setting until after I was served food. She kept reaching over me to pick up dishes that were being handed over the bar. In doing so, she knocked a full bottle of beer (thankfully still capped) into my plate of sushi. She apolgized, but it didn't make up for the now squished maki on my plate. While the sushi is decent and a great value, the service blows. Good for take out only. more

Great Place 7/18/2003

I have been going to Taste of Tokyo for years because of its terrific sushi and its value. Back when I started going, the value attracted me as much as anything. Now I go because I like the food. You get large portions for your money and it is good quality. They have a new addition to the sushi menu. It is a steam roll that is out of this world. In summary, great sushi, large portions, low price. Life is good! Pros: Quality/Portions, Menu, Staff more

Good Price, Marginal Sushi 7/8/2003

This is an edit to the review I posted roughly six months ago. I am somewhat bothered by the food that I have received at Taste of Tokyo lately. I formerly considered this to be one of Nashville's better restaurants. Now I do not. The regular menu is still good, being the only reason I gave a rating of 5. Presently, I would rate the sushi quite lower. Why? 1)Sushi rice is usually compacted and mushy, probably a result of not properly folding and fanning the rice. 2)No nigiri has any wasabi between the fish and rice. 3)The sashimi includes boiled shrimp and crabstick. 4)The maki is exceedingly dry. I beg you, Taste of Tokyo, revert to your old methods of preparation, and turn your front counter into a sushi bar, it would do wonders. You have good food and great service, just don't let your sushi program die. Pros: Quick seating, excellent value, friendly service Cons: No bar, small (not cramped), neglected sushi menu more

Taste Of Tokyo 3/30/2003

My son and I believe that this restaurant represents the best value in the Nashville area. The food is delicious, inexpensive, and plentiful. The place is small and crowded at times. Still we never had to wait for long. All the personnel are very fiendly and provide a superb service. Pros: Inexpensive, delicious food, superb service Cons: crwded at times, no parking in front more

Good sushi, quaint atmosphere 11/9/2002

This is the best sushi at the cheapest prices in Nashville. They obviously didn't waist their time and effort on decore. Their staff is super friendly. Just as good as Ichiban. Pros: Great sushi more
