Tapas Lounge WAS a wonderful, place, with tasty if overpriced food and wine, in a Mission-style atmosphere where it looked like Zorro could swoop in at any momento--been there maybe 80 times in the five years I lived down the street in that 'hood. BUT--it was closed last time I looked! more

First time but not the last 12/24/2007

If you like tapas with a very romantic atmosphere, comfortable seats and sangria then this is the place for you. I went there for the first time and I was impressed by the excellent service and individual attention I was given as it was my first time in this restaurant. both my date and me would go back without any reservations. Pros: Ambience, Tapas, Sangria, Service Cons: I have been there only once more

Great Tapas If You Order Right 4/9/2007

The Tapas Lounge is convenient for me so I go when I have a craving for some tapas. It's not the greatest restaurant overall in the world but, if you order right, then you'll leave feeling very satisfied. I always, always , always order the Jamon on cheese bread drizzled with olive oil. (serrano ham on toasted machango cheese bread), the salad with cheese bread, the photo chips with spicy mayo (thinly sliced deep fried potato crisps), the garlic chicken and the seasoned tomatos (cold tomatos, seasoned). Sometimes the plates come out wrong, for instance the tomatos will come out soggy or the jamon won't be drizzled with olive oil but, I always send it back if the order doesn't come out as I remember and they always remedy the situation. It's great if you know exactly how the dishes should come out. more

Overpriced, average quality food, waste of a nice venue 1/26/2007

Portions were very small (yes, I know it's Tapas), and very average quality for the money. Pros: Decor Cons: Food portions, food prices, food quality given the prices, service, and did I mention the prices? more

What a rip off! 11/12/2006

I passed this place all the time and thought it had such a great open and airy atmosphere, so I gave it a shot. The $30 pitcher of sangria had more ice and fruit in it than alcohol and the over-priced tapas was far from authentic. I'd only go there if you're interested in the view of 1st Ave. Pros: Romatic atmosphere Cons: Over priced bad food and drinks more

Beautiful! Relaxing!! Great Ambience!! 9/27/2006

I had an excellent dinner and evening here! I went with a friend and we both ordered 3 Tapas. For those saying the servings are small...well, they're suppossed to be!! As far as pricing goes, I don't think it's expensive for NYC considering TAPAS are like the size of an appetizer, it's really not bad. Pros: Ambience, tasty TAPAS more

I love this place 4/19/2006

I've been going to Tapas Lounge for a few years, and I absolutely love it!!!! The sangria is incredible, and the tapas have always been consistently delicious. The decor is beautiful and romantic. And, unlike most loud, crowded tapas places, there's enough room to sit back and enjoy the environment (while still being able to hold a conversation). Pros: Decor, Great Sangria & Food, Romantic more

Food yuk, expensive yuk and smelly yuk 3/8/2006

Similar to other reviews that Ive read, I wish that I wouldve visited your site prior to going to this restaurant. In any case it has urged me to join Citisearch and write my thoughts about this place that is truly disgraceful for what a tapas bar experience should beFirst of all the menu leaves a lot to be desired, it is very limited and not quite representative of a tapas restaurant. The raw materials were definitely on the cheap side, the chorizo was so blah and the paella was completely tasteless, clearly made from a frozen one. To make matters worse, the smell in my clothes from the poor ventilation has remained in my clothes for days. Service was ok, price was not. Bottom line: Avoid the joint! Pros: Room Size, Decore Cons: Food, Smell, Price more

Only go for the decor 2/19/2006

Having read several bad reviews, I was in no rush to go to Tapas Lounge but when a former NY friend was visiting from LA said we had to go, I went. Wow! What a waste of a night. The sangria was good but no where good enough to rationalize the $45 it cost. The tapas were good but the sizes were beyond small. Three shrimp for $10?!? No wonder why there is a two tapas minimum per person. As nice as the ambience was, this is one place I will not be going back to. Pros: nice ambience Cons: $45 sangria, miniscule portions more

Worst experience ever! 2/2/2004

I can't believe people go to this place. The size of the dishes is tiny, the drinks are all over priced, and they push bottled wine on you over and over again! Who wants wine with their finger food? Not me, and I will never go back there again! The place was jammed, and the boy who was apparently the manager seemed to not care about his over worked servers. Cons: everything more

An extotic Moorish hideaway in Midtown 10/26/2003

I've lived in Spain for a year and traveled widely across Zaragoza, Leon, Cuenca, Barcelona, and Madrid. Tapas are normally small and unless you can afford to buy 5 or 6 tapas in the $8-14 range (each) accompanied by a good bottle of Rioja wine, you should opt for more americanized environments such as Xunta or Rincon de Espana. A larger portion is a ""racion"". The Spanish Moorish architecture and external ironwork are unique. The dim lighting, couches, and soft Medditerranean sounds in the background are the major draw. It's a great place to bring a colleague for drinks, a group of friends with eclectic tastes, or a special friend you want to relax with. I suggest you order the Patatas Bravas (spicy fries), the mussels, the jamon serrano, and el pollo andaluz. Yes, it's expensive and the waitstaff is not Spanish... however, the experience is anything but ordinary. Pros: Moorish Ambience, Rioja Wine Selection, Great patatas bravas Cons: Price, Arrogant waitstaff more

Beyond BAD... 10/23/2003

I have never had such bad service at a restaurant. **** I HAVE HAD BETTER SERVICE AT MCDONALD'S. **** The food - mediocre, at best. Small portions; overpriced. I will never EVER go back to this restaurant, and I will certainly discourage those that I know from going and wasting their time and money. The host was rude, ushering my party to the bar. We stood there with our coats in hand, wondering why no one offered to check them. Our server didn't care in the least as to how our experience was. We seemed to be no more than a nuisance to him. And a minimum of two tapas (dishes) per person? Please, how classless. I won't go on. I'll just say that it was BAD, BAD, BAD. Don't go - it's such a waste. Pros: None, None, None whatsoever. Cons: Horrendous service, Food not up to par, Overpriced. more

Don't go, don't go, DON'T GO!!! 9/21/2003

Had dinner there last night and got TOTALLY SCREWED!!! Small, WAY OVERPRICED tapas and a small, sub-par paella. I lived in Madrid for a year and was appalled at my treatment. Manager an arrogant jerk. $15 for tiny Kir Royale, and $10 for a glass of table wine? GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!! Cons: small portions, OVERPRICED, poor service more

So-so tapas 8/11/2003

Good for an after work date. The only thing they require is to buy two dishes per person. Each cost around $8 so that makes it $32 and not including drinks! Small decent portions though. Try their spiked lemonade - delicious. Oh, and no tables, all are coffee table height so put the hanky on the lap. Pros: open windows Cons: Dark, MininmPurchaseRequire more

AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! 6/2/2003

WARNING: THE SERVICE IS ATROCIOUS AND THE FOOD/DRINK IS ABSURDLY OVERPRICED. Run, don't walk, away from this mediocre restaurant. After spending $250 for a few tasteless tapas and subpar sangria ($40 a pitcher!), our party of four was promptly asked by our waitress--not more than 1.5 minutes after we paid the bill--to relocate to the bar because ""another party was waiting for our table."" Instead of letting us finish our 1/2 glass of sour sangria, we were urged two or three more times to leave. A cocky, arrogant and shockingly condescending ""manager"" (all of 22 years-old) then told us we should leave the restaurant if we wouldn't move to the bar. Let me add that there were other available tables. In sum, the service is horrific and the food is bland--very disappointing for a place that looks laid back and inviting on the surface. Cons: service, food, prices more

Still fabulous 3/30/2003

Each time I'm in the city, I try to get to the Tapas Lounge for dinner. This time I took my father and it was still the best tapas around, as far as I'm concerned. (The romanesco sauce for the fried calamari is to die for!). Wonderful romantic ambiance and a satisfying meal at a reasonable price. The service is a little slow, but I doubt I'd have noticed if I'd been there with my boyfriend and not my father (my dad's comment - it's a ""make out"" restaurant with all the low seats and dark lighting). My only caution - don't pay for a hookah here, nowhere near as good as Sahara East. Also - you really should make a reservation, regardless of whether they will be busy. They seat you faster that way. Pros: Fabulous tapas, Nice wine selection Cons: Service a little slow more

not worth the money 2/2/2003

Glass of wine $10, one tapas with 3 shrimp and some mushrooms $9, paella $23 - getting my butt frozen by the draft - priceless. That's why i'm not going back. It was pretty pricey for what we were served. I think the place may be better for larger groups, it seems as if there weren't many seats for just 2. Plus they don't have a sign outside the place- it was tough to find. The food was good but nothing special. Pros: nice decor, ok food Cons: expensive more

Spanish at it's Best! 1/17/2003

Walking into this place makes you almost forget you're in NYC, and think you're in Spain. The drinks are great, and service is outstanding! The staff really seemed to care about each guest. more

Dont know what others are talking about 1/16/2003

I love this place. I've never had any complaints about the service, they are very attentive. The food is good, and I love their sangria. The atmosphere is great as well. Prices can add up if you're not careful but it is easy enough to get a filling reasonably priced meal. I definitely recommend this place more

The best in NYC 12/21/2002

This place deserves four stars. I recommend to go back every chance you get. This place has great food, atmosphere and service. Last time I went we didn't have a reservation and they sat us as soon as possible. They sent us to there sister restaurant next door for fifteen minutes to have a glass of wine and checked on us two times to see that we were ok. I love it here and as a chef that is saying alot. Go to Tapas Lounge and go here often. more
