Tangletown Gardens

Tangletown Gardens has become my secret weapon to create the coolest combinations for my containers. There is no other place that compares. I always feel at ease knowing their helpful design suggestions and advise will ensure results and ultimately success. Sometimes, I'll let them take the lead with their ideas, and other times I'll give them parameters. Either way, they respect my ideas while pushing the envelope of unexpected combinations-- things I wouldn't come up with on my own. To me, this is a value, since I pay the same for their plants as I would anywhere else, with the confidence of knowing their ideas and plants will work in my garden. This small business does not take up a lot of room. In fact, it fits in the average home lot. But there is so much packed in, that you can spend days looking at everything. The garden is laid out with small paths so it seems that you on an adventure. Furthermore, their plant selection is laid out as if it is planted. You can pretty much buy anything you see. In addition to plants, there are a lot of decorative garden items. This is a great place to find that rare plant to no one else has or even heard of. The staff is very learned in their product. Overall, this place is great to visit and during the holidays and winter, there is also lots to see. My only complaint is that it is pricey, but if you want great service and great items, you have found a great garden store. more

Tangletown Gardens may have one of the best selections of exotic and beautiful perennials in the Twin Cities. They boast a selection of about 3500 plants and shrubs in the space of your average convenience store plus parking lot. The variety doesn't come cheap, however. Although they have a some smaller plants in 3" pots for 2.99--their prices for most plants are usually in the upper medium to high end-and they never have sales (not even at the end of the season-everything is overwintered in an offsite greenhouse). The owners and staff also have a lot more attitude than your average garden center owner or employee. Every question is greeted with a sigh and a "I can't believe you're asking me that" pause. Most of them act as if they are doing you a huge favor in locating their own product for you. That said, the shopping experience (sans staff) is actually quite pleasant. The arrangement of the perennials ranges from "nice" to "showstopper" and the arrangement of product in the dwarf shrub section and shade areas has almost a transcendent, japanese garden quality to it--even though the plants are still in their containers! more
