Refined Japanese Department Store 5/21/2006

Takishimaya is a lovely Japanese dpeartment store. As other reviewers note, many of the goods are quite expensive, but this is as it should be. This is a high-end luxury retailer selling mostly Japanese goods, and the quality certainly matches the price, although it may be more quality than you need. This is a wonderful place for buying gifts as everything is packaged and wrapped beautifully, and they have a nice cafe. more

Pretty to look at 12/17/2005

The store is meticulously arranged and decorated but I have to agree with the other reviewers -- the prices are really quite exaggerated. (Not sure if they forgot to convert from yen to dollars? ) If you are in town visiting, this is one of the many unique places to explore. As mentioned by others, I also recommend a visit through the entire store even if you don't plan on buying anything. The garden and tea room really are quite beautiful. more

Seasonal Blackish Red Orchids - Super rare $150 11/8/2005

No where else can you pick up a bouquet of black red orchids that are fresh and come with a glass vase for $150. These orchids lasted for weeks... I was impressed as they were so beautiful. Other then that it has a selected few of interesting contemporary clothing, furniture and gadgets. Interior is nicely organized and decorated so it is an experience on its own just to walk around. Japanese department stores are rarely bustling like a Macy's or Bloomies...its much calmer. It is on the expensive side but if you are shopping for gifts...you can mostly count on not duplicating someone else's gift. more

Superb Tea House in the Basement 10/29/2005

Takashimaya is one of my wife Amy's favorite places in NY to shop. As a bonus, they have a great traditional Japanese tea house in the basement. The selection of teas is fantastic and extensive - if you are a green tea lover (like me) you can really go to town. The food is relatively inexpensive and very good. If you need a mid-afternoon snack or are a guy-non-shopper and want a diversion while your SO shops, it's a great place to plant with a book. more

Department Store 10/6/2005

I just returned from a week in New York city. This one of the most beautiful stores I've ever seen. It's a Japanese department store, and its products are all hand made. The bags, jackets, and sweaters for women are distinctly lovely. I highly recommend it if you're in the city. more

Beautiful, but a bargain it is not 8/9/2005

Takashimaya is a Japanese department store located in the heart of Fifth Avenue. It is a nicely appointed store that is known for its floral shop. This store has six floors (each one is tiny!), featuring all sorts of fashionable goods, including adult-sized clothing, stylish furniture, and cosmetics. Each floor was stylish, and had a friendly associate to help customers. The manner in which merchandise was displayed was amazingly grand, with even simple camisoles arranged like an art form. However, the prices were astronomical. (That beautiful blouse you like? Guess what, it costs $1250. And I'm NOT joking.) And the merchandise does not go on sale. (An associate told me that some of the furniture has been for sale since they opened a few years ago!) Oh well, I guess this place is great- as long as you have deep pockets. I suppose not too many people buy from this store; I was practically the only customer on most floors. I can only guess how much sales tax you would have to pay on that $1250 blouse. more

Unique flowers, clothing and design 8/3/2005

You don't know quite what to expect when you walk in this store. There are several levels and on each something unique. There is very unique clothing on the upper levels and a beautiful garden on the lower level full of unique and lovely flower arrangements like you'll see nowhere else. The tearoom in the basement is fun though small, you might want to look elsewhere if you get clausterphobic because it gets very crowded around lunch time. more
