Bad watch repair experience at Swiss Watchmaker, Harvard Square 12/9/2006

I took a digital diving watch my mother had bought me, and that had never given me any problems, in for battery replacement. $12, and apparently no problem. But, one half of the strap fell off when I got home. I found that annoying, but fixed it myself. A week later the watch leaked and the display filled with water and then functioned only partially. I took it back, & they told me I hadn't told them I wanted the watch (a waterproof watch) to be waterproof after the battery was replaced! They implied that the watch leaked because the watch was cheap, and that the leak had nothing to do with their work. But, they said they'd try fix it. A week later, I returned to get it, and it was still not fixed, at which point I asked for it back. When I got home, half the strap fell off again! I feel they did not respect my watch because it wasn't fancy, and they were patronizing. I will never go back there again, and I would not recommend the store to anyone. The watch has sentimental value, and now I feel stupid for entrusting it to them in the first place. more

NOT a good place for repairs 8/28/2006

The watchmakers bench in the store is all for show, they send repairs out to who knows where. I had a very expensive Breitling worked on by them and they billed me $250 including an extra $25 to "seal" it. After waiting a month to get it back water got in and fogged the crystal the first time I wore it in a pool . They acted as if that was to be expected from a watch rated to be waterproof to 100 meters and for the previous five years had worked perfectly in and out of water. more

Rip off 10/24/2005

When you walk past the window for this shop it seems very intriguing. In my opinion it is best if you stick just to window shopping at Swiss Watchmaker. Someone bought me a watch here for my birthday. This expensive watch came with a deficient band and the price was marked up by 40 percent. I realize that rent is high in Harvard Square but this is outrageous. Customer service here was also terrible. While I tried on different watches I was glared at and felt very rushed. The selection here is good for such a small shop but because of my negative experience I am not sure if I would shop here again. more

I didn't know where to go to fix a watch! 8/18/2005

My husband recently dropped his watch and the glass/crystal on the face of the watch shattered. We looked hard to find a place to get it fixed. It is difficult these days to find a place that can fix watches and jewelry. I had no idea what to expect, but was hoping for the best. Prior to dropping the watch off, a staff person quoted me "anywhere from $35-$150 to fix the watch. I think that it might be a bit high, but I have no frame of reference. My husband brought the watch in to the store and they quoted him $35 when they took the watch. The watch was fixed in a day and they only ended up charging $25! He is quite pleased with the job they did. We would recommend this place. It is very conveniently located in Harvard Square (convenient if you live in Cambridge or Somerville). Enjoy! more
