Great food for reasonable price 12/1/2007

This is one of my favorite restaurants! If you wanna take your loved one for a nice, romantic dinner, pick one of the french restaurants instead and expect to pay for it. If you are looking for a local place with great food for reasonable price, you will love Sunflower. I ate there at least 30 times and I am still not sick of the food (surprisingly :) My favorites: Shaken Beef and Vietnamese Crepe (amazing). Pros: food Cons: ambiance more

Average Vietnamese Food in the Mission 11/21/2006

I think you'll only like this place if you've never had good Vietnamese food before. Vietnamese food can be great, but this is not the spot. It took me a couple of times to figure out that it was mediocre - I really wanted it to be good! And it certainly looks good - but the taste does not deliver as you would expect. I like the ambience, cheery and laid-back - but the food ... it's just not worth eating out for. Pros: Vietnamese Food in the Mission Cons: Just not that good! more

Terrible Service and Blah food 5/25/2005

I've heard so many good things about this place, and then I tried it. The waiter was extremly rude, and the food was less then average. After we left the waiter chased down the street saying we did not pay our bill, my group walked backed to the resteraunt, just to find out he didn't count it correctly, besides being embarrasing, the waiter didn't even apologize, he just said ok go! Don't support this establishment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cons: rude service more

On Par With The City's Best 3/11/2005

For a cheap little Vietnamese food joint in the Mission, Sunflower sure does hold it's own. I've been raving to my friends about it for years and no one has ever been dissapointed. The food is very flavorful without just being loaded up with MSG, salt or oil. I never leave feeling My personal favorites are the shaken beef and lemon (grass?) chicken, but I've sampled a bunch of their menu and everything is terrific. The service is always fast and friendly, too. I'm just disappointed the only other Sunflower is 30 yards away (presumably to share the kitchen). Pros: Flavorful, Service, Inexpensive Cons: Adjacent Locations more

What flavor! 1/16/2004

This part of the Mission is packed with great restaurants. Sunflower stands out...food was full of flavor. The dishes aren't simply 'spicey'. The flavor of the meat and vegtables stands on it's own, any spice just accentuates the flavor. Very impressed. And our waiter was a kind old man who seemed to have a permanent smile. The bargain price and vietnamese beer make it even better. Pros: Value, Flavor, Unique Cons: Mission parking, small place more

yum! 7/9/2003

I recently had the chicken pho and have become hooked! It's so tasty and reasonably priced. I also highly recommend the Imperial Rolls. The service is friendly and the food comes pretty fast. If you're looking for a more fancy looking restaurant, you can always check out their other location which is just around the corner. Pros: inexpensive more

Just OK 4/18/2003

I found there food ok if all you want is to fill up at a cheap price. If you are looking for the tasty treat that I was you will not find it. Pros: cheap Cons: food quality more

Pretty darn tasty 10/19/2002

Food was great. I ordered a garlic and eggplant dish. I only wished the eggplant was done a little bit more. But of course, this is only a personal bias. Everyone else at the table, commented on how they liked it not being so done. I also ordered iced coffee, but wished that it had been made before everything else was brought to the table. It took me the entire dinner for my coffee to brew, and then had to race to drink it. more

This place rocks! 9/5/2002

I ate here for lunch and everything was d-e-licious. The portions were ample, the flavors were all different, and the prices were vert reasonable. Service was lovely. The joint is neat and clean. Some great things for vegetarians that I had never seen before. The crepe was the bomb as was the vegetable noodle soup. The food was less greasy than comparable restaurants. And their coffee was terrific. I can't wait to go back and try the rest of the vegetarian items. Pros: affordable more

Best Vietnamese Crepes 8/12/2002

This place serves the best Vietnamese Crepes over any other vietnamese restaurants I have tried. Even better than Mom's! Sorry, Mom. The Crepes are crispy and the ingredients hot & fresh. Also don't forget the exqusite, mouth watering Shaken Beef. This too is a must have to compliment the many flavors that is so common in East Asian cusines. Pros: Excellent food, Great Value, Never have to wait Cons: Horrible parking more

  • Right in the thick of the grimy bustle of 16th and Valencia, Sunflower isn't pretty, but it's cheap, heaping plates of Vietnamese are a thing of beauty. There are two sides to Sunflower: one, on Valencia, houses a few tables and a hot, greasy stove, and the other, on 16th, is a more spacious dining room connected to the other by a hallway--slightly more elegant, and out of sight of a kitchen that needs no exhibition. Massive portions of specialties like shaken beef, sunflower prawns and hot & sour soup all come in under $15, although it's the lunch specials--$8 for a platter of rice, salad, soup, imperial rolls plus meat, fish or veggies, big enough for two--that make Sunflower one of the best bargains in the city.
