\r No Compassion from Staff\r I am disappointed to say that Dr. Sumita's staff would not make an appointment for me to see him to have an ingrown toe nail removed due to the fact that the last doctor who cut out an ingrown nail for me would not send Dr. Sumita's office my record. According to Dr. Sumita's staff, he could not see me for an ingrown nail until he was able to ""review"" my patient record. After telling his staff I had tried repeatedly to obtain my medical record they said they would call my last doctor. Dr. Sumita's office tried to call the previous doctor's office for two days and could not even get an answer. Still Dr. Sumita's staff refused to make an appointment for me to see him. Neither of us was able to retrieve my previous medical record, but that did not change the fact that I was in pain. It would be nice if doctors and staff would rely on common sense and a sense of compassion when deciding who can get an appointment. I guess it would be safer to let the problem persist until my medical record arrived and risk blood poisoning. As a teacher, I am on my feet all day and needed relief. Fortunately, Dr. Miller of Chattanooga was able to see me almost immediately for an ingrown nail without my medical record. more

Awesome Surgeon 5/16/2009

I have been wanting to say thank you to Dr. Sumida for a long time and I thought this would be a good way to do it. A doctor in Birmingham recommended Dr. Sumida in Chattanooga. I had a tumor in my talus from a botched surgery on a bone chip in my ankle. Dr. S. researched my problem for several months and came up with a surgery that had never been done before. He did what nobody else wanted to do, and it saved my ankle. I am back skiing and it is because of the expertise Dr. Sumida possesses. Pros: He created a surgery that worked Cons: Nurse and I had a personality conflict more

Awesome Doctor and Staff 7/29/2008

Ive never written a review before but after looking up Dr Sumida's phone number for a friend of mine for her son, I saw the negative comments made and had to write my own experience. MY son dislocated his knee in 2003 at football practice and was taken to the local emergency room (we dont live in Chattanooga) we were referred to an orthopedic dr. I chose to call his dr. to ask her who she thought was the best, without hesitation she said Dr Mark Sumida. I called and explained the situation that my son was 13 at the time and needed a consult. We had an appointment less than a week, I was surprised! The staff was very professional and kind to both my son and I. I have 4 children and none had up to this point had ever broken a bone or had stitches before, so I was very anxious and scared for my son possibly having surgery. He explained everything at a level I, as a mother and also to my son could understand and put us both at ease. He told us what would or could happen. Everything went just as he said and my son went on to play middle school and high school football and will graduate next year, his leg is actually stronger than the other one. I have reccomended him to many people and will continue to do so. My children are my life and I trust Dr Sumida with the most precious thing I have and that is one of my children!!! Thank you!!!!\r more

Caring, helpful, and personable 4/15/2008

My husband and I visited Dr Sumida's office at the first of this month and were very impressed with him. He was genuinely concerned, but at the same time did not want to force us into making a decision. He recommended surgery, but told us that should be a personal decision. He also said that he uses a computer to make the most precise cuttings and placement of prosthesis possible. He was friendly, corteous, and very human at all times. \r His staff members were very nice as well, promising to check for the date we wanted and get back to us. When we asked if they knew how much our insurance would cover, they offered to check with our insurance company and let us know what they said before the date was set, so that we could make a decision based on that information. \r All in all, we felt Dr Sumida and his helpful staff did their best to meet our needs and make our visit comfortable. Thanks, doctor. We will be back! Pros: Convenient location right behind the hospital, good parking, friendly and caring staff, prompt service, no pressure, a doctor who listens and works with you. Cons: None! I'm not being partial. I am very critical when it comes to doctors, and I honestly couldn't find a thing wrong! more

No how, no way, no more 1/17/2008

I'm not a medical professional, but I've raised kids, helped aging friends and parents, and I'm in my mid 50s, so I'm not inexperienced. My wife had an unknown, fast growing, bleeding ulcer beside her nose and became worried. Called Sumida office and even visited the office to get an appointment. The rude and disrespectful staff would not consider an appointment in less than 4 months no matter the urgency. Foolishly, we believed the staff had her best interests in mind, so she waited. By the time of the apointment the tumor was the size of a quarter. The biopsy showed a basil cell carcinoma (cancer) and required plastic surgery, two seperate operations. Very expensive. You could almost see the tumor growing in size, oozing fluid, and the margin growing outward. I don't need to tell you good looking ladies how traumatic surgery on the face can be. That's why we don't trust this doctor or his rude staff to look out for our best interests any more, and suggest you go elsewhere for treatment. You won't get an examination no matter how urgent you think it is. Pros: nice office Cons: disregard for patient welfare, rude staff, long delays to make appointments more

Avoid unless you have to 4/25/2007

The doctor's office staff is rude and takes a very long time to get back to you. Dr. Sumida himself has an ego that is easily offended. While I'd generally overlook these things, I'd have to suggest caution or perhaps another doctor in the area, given that doctors set the tone for their staffs, and this is a doctor who performs surgery on you. Pros: experienced, one of a few orthos in chattanooga Cons: bad manners, surly staff, tough to get calls returned more
