Disappointed on takeout 10/31/2010

I have always had great ribs from there and a third or half has always been great for a takeout lunch.. However, this time the ribs were good tasting as always, however, soo small and not enough to fill a kid, let alone an adult.. I don't know where they got them, but, small and no meat at all.. Beans and cucumber salad were great as usual. Seems they are cutting down by size. more

Best brisket in the SLC 10/27/2009

I recently returned from the San Antonio area in Texas on a mission to taste some great BBQ. After sampling brisket at some of the most famous BBQ joints in the US, Rudy's and Texas Pride to name a couple I was pleased with my choices. Pros: Juicy, tender, smokey Cons: Messy more

Great restaurant, three years ago. 10/24/2009

Wow, I though I was getting a deal with a coupon from Restaurant_dot_com to this great restaurant that I had been to a few years back. My, how things change. Got there and started asking for my favorite dishes. No more smoky red beans and rice. No more whole baked sweet potatoes. Their ""Cajun Menu"" is one dish long. These folks are resting on their laurels, banking on the past, all the while subtracting from their formerly unique flair. The tables were sticky...I don't mean they didn't clean them, I mean it's like leftover adhesive from contact paper long ago...weird, though not all tables were like that. The salad came at the same time as the entre?s. BIG no no. I'm not going to eat a salad while my entre? goes cold. Since everything was plopped on the table at once, I didn't get to the cornbread until it was cool, though it seemed a good flavor, kinda cakey for me, I like it a bit more crispy and muffin like. When I got to the salad, the runny dressing and wet lettuce didn't work well. Made a puddly mess. Collard greens weren't much. Mashed potatoes and gravy were fine. But when was the last time you got excited over mash? Baked beans were average. The jambalaya was good, but if you think that jambalaya makes a ""Cajun menu"" please visit New Orleans again. How about an etouffe?, or a gumbo? And where did my red beans and rice go? My wife is from N'awlins so we should know our Cajun. The one bright spot was the full slab Memphis-style ribs. Awesome flavor. But they could have been a bit more tender...though this seems to be a trend among BBQ lately...slightly tender but not fall off the bone good. The BBQ chicken was also good, but on average this restaurant has had it's heyday. I caught a glimpse of it a few years back, but now I'm only left with the blas? that this restaurant has become. Pros: Tasty Ribs Cons: Everything else more

SMOKIN' QUE & GR8 Drinks Too!!! 6/29/2009

Went in on Sunday for a B-Day bash and the joint was jumpin'. We had a group so got to try loads. The brisket (order wet if you like it nice n juicy), Tangos (rib ends) Cherry wood smoked wings (did I die and go to heaven?) ribs and smoked turkey were the stand outs. Great smoke flavor and the 5 sauces are all great alone or mixed into your fave combo. You can buy the sauces for $5 a bottle and take it home. The sides are exceptional for a Que joint. All made in house from scratch, and the flavor shows. The Jambalaya is 2nd to Mother's in NOLA and the bean soup is killer, as is the cornbread stuffing. Yes, they have collard greens, cooked slow and a sop to your conscience for all the meat you're gonna wolf down. Full bar too and on a hot afternoon, the martinis were just the ticket. Also full soda selection plus Weinhardt sodas. We had super service and the portions are hefty--plenty to share or take home. Open Sundays so you really can't miss. Management that cares and a friendly, attentive staff---did I mention the full bar, great food and live music once in a month. Plus they're on Salt Lake City Waiter so you can get it delivered to your door. You won't be disappointed! Pros: Best BBQ Around, Full Bar Open Sunday Cons: Not Open 24 hours more

Food only passable, service apathetic 4/6/2008

I'm pretty surprised that this restaurant gets good reviews given our experience this evening. We were seated for 10-15 minutes before even rating a ""hello"" from our server. Entrees for our party arrived very slowly and in stages, and most of them were cold. The barbecue tasted pretty good -- even cold ribs are okay -- but you expect it to be hot. A single brownie took so long to come from the kitchen we wanted to cancel it but had already been charged. The brownie too was disappointing -- had to have been at least a couple of days old. Our server's apathy was almost laughable. Overall, I was embarrassed to have chosen this restaurant for a large party of out-of-town guests and wish I hadn't relied on the strangely positive reviews on this site. Pros: good central Sugarhouse location Cons: food is nothing special, service is laughable more

Good Food, Good Service 12/1/2007

I have eaten out at quite a few resturants and the two most important things are good food and good service. Sugar House BBQ Co. certainly got these things right. I thought the pulled pork was delicious and the beans were very tasty. I especially liked the cucumber salad, it reminded me of my mother's . I like that I was able to order a beer with my meal, it was just the right touch. The service was good, timely and friendly. I was recommended here by friends and would recommend to anyone looking for a good, affordable and pleasurable dining experience. more

Ribs ROCK!!! 12/1/2007

This place is delicious. I have never tasted ribs so amazingly tasty! They are so meatly too. You know how at most BBQ joints you order ribs they barely have any meat on them, well not at Sugarhouse BBQ these babies are full of meat and mouth watering! The sides are also very good. I personally love the cucumber salad and baked beans but have also really enjoyed the greek potatoes and many of the other sides. This place is a really cool place to eat, it has such great atmosphere and I have really had a lot of luck with the service. They have always proved to be very helpful. more

Keep on searching...for quality bbq 9/18/2007

I don't want to be too unfair to the folks over at Sugarhouse BBQ, but after eating at this establishment three times, even the nicest guy has to admit they have a lot to learn about BBQ. How they maintain almost 4 1/2 stars in this category has to be through naive conceptions of what BBQ is or supposed to taste like. The highest aspect of eating there are the beans by far. Not to praise them as to be stellar, but passable in a general sense (heavy table ketchup taste and all). Is this the high point to which we want one of the supposed ""best"" BBQ joints known for? Pros: Great live music to keep you distracted...from the food. Cons: Recipes need to be re-energized. more

You call this Barbecue? 9/18/2007

Walking in I was optimistic. The smell was great and the Bluegrass band set that easy tone of good times....but the food? Not authentic by any means. Pros: atmosphere Cons: food more

bad food / bad service 7/13/2007

I took my girlfriend to Sugarhouse BBQ tonight around 9:30. I had been there before, but she had not. They were out of the first two menu items we wanted, so we both settled for a chicken sandwich. 3 minutes later, our server came out with two of the worst chicken sandwiches I have ever seen or eaten. How it was cooked so fast is anyone's guess, but after taking one bite of the cold/hard bun and the cold (dry) chicken breast...I knew! $9 for a cold hamburger bun with a tiny, cold piece of chicken, some red onions and a piece of wilted lettuce. Everything was cold and dry. I don't know how anyone can charge so much for something that could potentially send you to the doctor! Both my girlfriend and I only took one bite of the sandwich before telling the waitress that we would not eat or pay for the cold, limp food in front of us. She blankly said ok. I offered her $4 for the soda's we had consumed and she ACTUALLY took my money and offered no apology what so ever. The entire staff just watched us walk out like they could care less! Unbelievable! I would go to KFC before trying this place again! No respect for their customers or their food. Pros: Patio and Beer Cons: Service and Food more

good for NJ but not for TX 4/27/2007

I think this place is quite good, yummy beans and pulled pork and sauce, as good as any BBQ I have had around here.. BUT I took my boyfriend from TX there and he was unhappy, as his brisket was dry and not smoky enough and tasted like roast beef (in his opinion). My friend from Kansas City likes it but she has been in UT for some time. They do have beer!!! Pros: beer. unlimited soda refills. more

Strange sickness 4/26/2007

When we got there, we were seated near the front and the customer service was fine, though in the back it sounded like there was a lot of goofing off. We got our food, portions were not very large but ok. Taste was good, but not great. After we left, 2 out of 5 of us got really bad stomach aches. I was one of them. I'm not sure what caused it exactly, but I haven't felt that ill so suddenly in a long time. I don't think I'll go back. Pros: Smell, building Cons: portions, too much goofing off among employees, unimpressive taste more

Cheap and tasty 12/9/2006

We often frequent SugarhouseBBQ when we are in a hurry or don't feel like getting dressed to the nines for a meal out. Pros: Food, price, take out Cons: Bit noisy at times more

BBQ Done Right! 8/7/2006

Fantastic BBQ! I have tried many of the items on the menu, and have never been disappointed. I bring family and freinds from all over to enjoy this diamond. Strongly recommend this location if you are looking for a taste of true BBQ. Pros: Any you could think of for a BBQ joint more

Great Spare Ribs & Killer sauce 5/31/2006

Great Spare ribs, so so baby backs. Killer Sauces all around. Greek roasted potatoes are tops and so is the cucumber salad. Pros: Best ribs, Best sauces Cons: A bit $$, Loud more

babybacks were really dry!! 5/25/2006

When they say ""dry ribs,"" they mean it. The beans were OK but a little spicy for me. The cornbread was dry. The roasted potatoes were good. I won't be going back. Service was excellent. Pros: service more

This is food to go out of your way for 5/15/2006

Ah Sugar House. Amazing brisket and pulled pork. Out of this world baked beans (with pieces of smoked meat in them - not for the vegetarians). Really good Lemony Garlicy Roasted Greek Potatoes. You need to know whether you prefer your brisket dry (lower fat) or wet (pieces of fat) and know which way to order it. Also, if you like garlic, don't miss the tomato garlic salad dressing on a side salad. If those items appeal to you, SHBBQ, is well worth it. Other items are fine - not bad, not amazing but we have tried it all and stick with what's above. Pros: brisket, pulled pork, baked beans Cons: Sometimes the staff, is snooty more

You just never know 9/18/2005

I never know if it is going to be good or not.... I have tried the chicken salad sandwich, that has always been good. The beef is sometimes dry. I tried the ribs, and they were very smoky tasting and very, very dry... I ended up giving it to my dog. The chicken was very tender and tasty.... I have mixed reviews on them. more

Trying Something New 7/29/2005

The brisket sandwich was great and so was the combination plate. Cornbread was dry and so was the coleslaw. After our waiter delivered he never came back until we were done. He did give us a 10% discount for that, but I probably won't go back. Pros: Tender Meat, Tasty Sauce, Quick Food Delivery Cons: Food Not Very Hot, Dried Out, Slow Service more
