A different brew 3/9/2006

If you're tiring of the standard bars and pubs in Capitol Hill, check out the Stumbling Monk. It's a small place just a few blocks from Broadway that specializes in Belgium brews. While I'm not a huge fan of the Belgium style of beer, I still think it tastes good and provides a nice variety to the standard macro/micro beers offered by other bars in the area. Plus, the Stumbling Monk always has a relaxed feel to it. Something I am a big fan of. more

Pleasant Little Tavern on Capitol Hill 9/28/2005

The Stumbling Monk is a pleasant little tavern located on Olive Way about 2 blocks south of Broadway and roughly two blocks north of Summit. Being a tavern, it serves only beer and wine (no hard liquor). There is no kitchen, so you'll need to eat before your visit. The establishment has about a dozen specialty beers on tap, mostly microbrews from foreign lands. The staff is very helpful with recommendations; just let them know how you like your beer (i.e. bitter or smooth). My friend and I were very pleased with the service. The tavern is small and on weekends gets quite crowded. The acoustics of the building are very poor, so you may have trouble carrying on a conversation without yelling. There is only one small single-user bathroom, for the guys and gals to share (somehow, this just adds to the charm of the place), with a small sink just outside. The lighting in the bar is just right (not too bright and not too dark) and adds to the pleasant ambiance. Despite the noise level and the bathroom accommodations, you will likely feel very comfortable in The Stumbling Monk. Every time my buddy and I visit we ask ourselves "Why don't we come here more often?" The fact that they don't serve food is the only real drawback, but they more than make up for it with the non-smoking atmosphere. more

Corner bar specializing in Belgian Beer 8/17/2005

The Stumbling Monk is a nice corner bar that specializes in Belgian beers. This is my favorite place to go to relax and have a beer or two. It is a great setting for small groups of four or less. If you do not like beer, there is not much else that The Stumbling Monk has to offer, as there is no kitchen and no liquor… just good beer. They recently did away with smoking at this bar, which makes drinking at this bar even more pleasant. more

Belgian brews 8/6/2005

The Stumbling Monk is one of my favorite bars anywhere - they specialize in Belgian beers, so they always have a selection of great beers you can try on tap. Always some Belgian ones, and sometimes maybe a Dutch one too. You could pass it by without noticing it from outside, but it's worth keeping a look out for it if you're in the area. more

Editorial

  • In Short
Maybe it's the dim lighting, or the indifferent attitude of the bartenders, or the obscure beers on tap, but something about this sliver of a Capitol Hill bar makes a person feel...
