I organized a dinner to send one of my buddies off to India for a 2 year work stint. It was a last minute deal and we planned on 8-10 guys showing up. He wanted to do steak. We...

Disappointing!!! 5/29/2008

9pm reservations, asked the maitre de at 9:15 how much longer, he stated 20 minutes, 20 minutes goes by ask him again, he says 20 minutes and was extremly rude and unprofessional. Eventually get seated after 45 minutes at the lounge area next to the crowded bar, not the main dining room. When the meal came out we aksed for salt, pepper and the correct sauce (they brought us the wrong one and insisted it was the right one!) - had to wait and wait and wait and ask a second time. Don't know why people love this place - the steak was ok - I have had much better steak at non-steakhouse restaurants and was treated much better. Service poor, wait time absolutely ridiculous, and so-so food. Not worth it. Pros: Ambiance Cons: Service, wait time, food more

Really great food, awesome Decor, long wait... 5/23/2008

My sister and I had reservations for 7pm on a Thursday night. We arrived at 6:50 and sat at the bar for a cocktail and waited for our table...45 minutes later we were seated. Now with that said, the food was amazing and the service was good. The NY Strip is the recommended cut for this place, cooked to perfection with a nice char on the outside and served with a big fat clove of roasted garlic. The sides were above average I must say as well- the black truffled creamed spinach, the goose fat potatoes, and the creamed corn with pancetta is OFF THE WALL CRAZY GOOD!!!! The decor is old school NY Gangster feel with legendary photos of actors and a lot of New York legends, along with red leather booths and dark, deep red walls. Overall I wood expect and exceptional meal from this restaurant along with great service. Pros: Steak, Sides, decor, and service Cons: long wait, small place... more

Great steak not enough to offset bad management attitude, arrogant, indifferent mindset 5/22/2008

Arrogant jerks who don't need your business. So the only considerate thing to do is spare them the burden of your presence. They have no clue about graciousness, customer satisfaction or largesse; and don't seem to be interested in cultivating long-terrm relationships. Leave them to the German and French tourists, I doubt if they will accept payment in U.S. dollars much longer anyway. Of course the food is great, giving the Devil his due, but that by itself does not a pleasant dining experience make. There are too many choices in this fair city to put up with their indifferent service and money-grubbing managerial attitude. I've been in this town since WW II, and I've seen thousands of joints come and go. This one will go. Pros: great steak, cooked to perfection Cons: Thumbs down -very pricey, cheap thematic kitsch, terrible management attitude more

Best steakhouse in the city 4/29/2008

Strip House is the best steakhouse ive been to in the city, and ive been to quite a few. the decor is unique for a steakhouse with vibrant red seating and a risque theme, though tasteful. they have a great selection of wines, including my favorite cabernet from napa. the steak was cooked exactly to my preference and the roasted garlic made it even better. the black truffle creamed spinach was delicious (though im guessing they just use truffle oil which is actually not made with real truffles, but it's really good regardless). expect to spend a lot, as with most steakhouses, but it's worth it. Pros: Delicious steak, great ambiance Cons: Expect to spend a lot more

Waited an hour and a half! 4/11/2008

Went to Strip House with 4 other friends for our periodic guys night out steak dinner. We've been to just about every steakhouse in Manhattan over the last 10 years. I used to love the Strip House, the steak is good, if not the best, and the atmosphere is nice. Here's the problem - 4/5 of us were on time for our reservation. They refused to seat us until the fifth arrived - we even offered to get his order by phone so it will not hold up the ordering. We wait at the bar for 45 minutes until we are all there - then they tell us that it will be another 20 minutes for a table to open up - even though there are 2 empty tables right in front of us! 20 minutes turn into 45, so we are standing at the bar for a total of ONE AND A HALF HOURS! Not even an offer of a round of drinks! I told the manager that there are a lot of steakhouses in NY and he just lost 5 customers forever and his response - ""Well, okay"". Never been treated like this in any other steakhouse! Pros: Food, atmosphere Cons: Seating, management more

Best Overall Steakhouse in NYC 3/8/2008

While Spark's has the best steak in NYC I have to say that for ""overall experience"" nothing beats The Strip House. The restaurant sports a swanky, sexee decor with the attitude and feeling of a speakeasy. The service my party received on New Year's Eve was top notch and the steak is top notch. I have to give credit where credit is due and stress that the creamed spinach has to be the best in the world. I challenge any human being walking this earth to serve me a better creamed spinach. If you want to impress a date or take a loved one out for a hip evening then go to The Strip House. Pros: 20 oz. New York Strip and side of Creamed Spinach more

Must Have: Black Truffle Spinach Leave It: Caesar 2/12/2008

We thought the food was AMAZING at Strip House, with the exception of the Caesar salad, which was way too fishy. The NY Strip was cooked perfectly, and the sides are too die for - we ordered the spinach (best I've ever had) and the Potato Romano (or something like that), which was mashed potatoes covered in cheese. Absolutely delicious. We were too full for dessert, but made room for an after dinner drink, which we took our time with and were not rushed by anyone to finish. Pros: Spinach, Potato Romano (or something like that), STEAK!! Cons: Caesar Salad, No Signature Cocktails more

AMAZING food! 1/23/2008

The Strip House is hands down the greatest steak in NYC. I know people will say ""No, Peter Luger's!"" - but no. I got the strip steak medium rare and it melted in my mouth. The seafood platter is amazing, the wine selection is great. I HIGHLY recommend coming here. In fact, I may even eat here tonight. 5 stars, easy. Pros: Food, ambience Cons: Expensive, but worth it. more

Good find! 1/9/2008

I would recommend this restaurant to other people. Very good, attentive service, good food and very cozy ambience. I go there pretty often I am a very picky customer. I ordered lobster and clams casino, their cream of mushroom soup is delicious too! It is a little more than what you pay at other places but it is worth its price. 4 stars! more

Great Steak... Mediocre Dessert 12/4/2007

This place was right up there with the best steak in town. The atmosphere is pretty cool, with the red lights and the bar. They have a great scotch and beer selection, including some Belgian Trappist Ales, which are always a good choice. The rib-eye was very flavorful and perfectly cut. The filet mignon was also delicious. I would definitely put the quality of the steaks here on top with Peter Luger, Uncle Jack?s, and Quality Meats. The side dishes were pretty good as well, especially the cream spinach. The only downside of the meal was dessert, which left a lot to be desired. Skip it. Overall, this place is definitely a great place for carnivores everywhere! Pros: Steak, Bar, Atmosphere Cons: Dessert more

Too close for comfort 11/11/2007

I wanted to take my b/f to a nice, romantic place to celebrate his b-day this weekend. After hours of searching CitySearch I came across the ""Strip House"". I had to almost beg for a Saturday night reservation and when we got there neither one of us were wow'd by anything. The tables are very close to one another and we were seated @ a 2-seater table between two other couples. It was loud and distracting. So much that we were more in tune w/ the couples' loud conversations than we were with our own. I didn't find it romantic at all. I couldn't hear, understand or memorize the entrees the waiter described to us so quickly. Good news though - I was able to hear a few dishes as he described them to the couple we bumped elbows with. They were OUT of the NY Strip Steak which is what I went for and the waiters practically twisted my arm to remove the bread serving from our table even though we hadn't finished with it. With all of this said I still thought the filet mignon & black truffle spinach was very good, just not what I expected for the cost. Great place to go if you like hovering service and prefer not being able to hear your date. ""Don't believe the hype"".... Pros: Nice decor, OK food Cons: Price more

Always impressed 10/21/2007

If you want excellent steak, french fires, amazing creamed spinach, phenomenal crab cakes- wow- it just goes on...go to THIS restaurant... It's so delicious...and the ambiance is amazing. The lighting is not overbearing- and even when it is crowded- you can still hear what is going on at your own table... It's decorations speaks for itself.... I ALWAYS order the Ribeye which, no matter what the cost...I NEVER leave unhappy because it is just so worth it! Pros: lighting, staff, ambiance and FOOD! Cons: The crowd may seem overbearing when you get there but I've never had to wait longer than 20 minutes...and ANY wait for this place is WORTH IT!!! more

Very Disappointed :( 10/9/2007

Recently celebrated my husband b-day on Saturday and we were both sadly disappointed. The 1 star is for the cream of spinach which was very good but definitely not worth the $250 price tag for the whole meal. Being to several popular NYC steak places, this by far is the worst steak we have had. I was first interested in the Chateaubriand but the waiter turned his noise down at that and suggested the rib-eye for 2. We usually get the porterhouse for 2 but the waiter had raved about the rib-eye so we decided to get it. When it came it was charred on the outside (which is okay) but inside was still purple when we asked for Medium. Even though we never send things back, we had to on this one. It was definately not cooked inside. The Caesar salad was okay but the shrimp cocktail tasted very fishy. The steak was fatty and the charred outside wasn?t very flavorful. I tried to eat the left over meat but all I could taste was a charred chewy flavorless piece of meat. Keens, Peter Lugar, Mark Joseph and even Ruth Chris are far better than this. Please don?t waste your money here. Pros: Cream spinach Cons: Prices, bad steak, rushed service and small tables on top of each other more

Romantic Setting 9/2/2007

A friend gave me and my boyfriend a gift certificate to this east village steak house. It was our first visit and we were impressed! We were seated promptly and service was flawless. The decor is super-sexy...photos of 1940's strippers and pin-up girl wallpaper, along with intimate lighting made this a nice date spot. Food was fantastic, the kitchen split the salad we shared so beautifully on two seperate plates we were afraid we had ordered two salads! The steaks and lobster were amazing and the cheesecake we had for dessert could have fed a family of six. I would highly recommend this as a romantic alternative to the big old men steak houses (peter lugers, etc...) more

What's the Fuss??? 8/1/2007

I was truly expecting to have the best steak in the city when me and my companions entered Strip House after hearing and reading all the reviews. I must say not one of us left feeling good about ourselves. The steak was not even close to being the best. Our table had a good variety of orders with alll the meats represented. I had the strip of course and I could not wait to cut into the meat. When it came, I cut a piece and tasted one mediocre steak. Our whole table almost at once looked at each other with disapointment. The steaks were either too salty, peppery, charred, or just plain bad. It wasnt just our table either because the table next to us had a woman who was very upset with her filet. Me and my friends have been to almost all the top of the line steakhouses in the tri state area and i must say this place is not one of them. I dont know if we came on a really off day for this place but if we're paying top of the line prices there shoudlnt be any off days. Otherwise all the reviewers who rave about this place never had a good steak before. Pros: Great Atmosphere, Great Service Cons: Very mediocre steak for the money more

Best steak house in the city 7/30/2007

I have been here three times now, and although it leaves a dent in my wallet, it is worth it. The decor of the restaurant is very trendy and gives a great vibe to the restaurant. The food is superb, the filet mignon is the best and the sides to get are the mashed potatoes and the creamed corn. They are our of this word. It is hard to save room for dessert, given the amazing bread basket and steak, but the portions are astonomical. Beware, the cheese cake could feed 5 people, it is so huge. Also dont worry if you cant get reservations, there are tables available for walk ins, in the lounge/bar area, which is actaully better than the restaurant. Also, ask for a table agains the wall, or else they'll stick you in a table in the middle of the restaurant. Pros: Food and ambience Cons: Price more

Expensive but worth it 7/24/2007

I was in New York with my boyfriend and his 17 year old son last weekend (7/21/07) and had dinner at the Striphouse. My NY friend highly recommended the place for its steaks, ambiance (bordello-like setting) and more casual/laid back atmosphere. She assured me that we will not be disappointed. She was right!!! We started out with the juiciest and tastiest shrimp cocktail that I had ever had. The crab cake was crispy on the outside but moist on the inside. My boyfriend ordered the NY steak, I had the ribeye and our 17 yo had the sirloin. We had the goosefat potatoes, creamed spinach with truffles and creamy potatoes. We were so stuffed but our teenager managed to order chocolate profiterole (stuffed with ice cream instead of whipped cream drizzled with chocolate.) Few days later, I am still thinking of that evening at the Striphouse. Our hard to please 17 year old was raving about it the next day. The check including tip and 2 diet cokes cost us $275.00. It's one of those dinners where it was expensive but really worth it and worth remembering. The service was friendly, the place cozy but not stuffy. I will definitely go back next time I visit New York. Pros: Steak, sides, dessert, ambience, service Cons: Can't think of any!!! Expensive? more

great steaks but obscene prices 7/2/2007

We went last Friday to celebrate a birthday and I have to give credit where it is due--the steaks were delicious. Definitely the closest we have to the ""gold standard"" of Peter Lugers here in Manhattan. My reason for only 3 stars is twofold--the prices were insane. Without spluging, we spend $100.00 each before tip. Yeah, the room is cool, and the atmosphere is great, and I'm not cheap, but that's a lot of money for steak, especially when it comes to my 2nd reason--be prepared for the most rushed service--I felt like they really wanted us out of there. The waiter wanted to tell us the specials as we were sitting down! Don't put down your fork during dinner, as a busboy will try and take your plate. They never even tried to sell us a second bottle of wine. There is a line between attentive service and overbearing service and they definitely crossed the line. I was really uncomfortable. So go for the food, and chew fast. Pros: steak was delicious, sides were wonderful Cons: very rushed service, pricey more
