I don't get Stephanie's 10/5/2010

I'll give Stephanie's 5 stars for location, but that's about it. Last time I went my seared tuna salad was soggy, the tuna was smelly, and the ""sangria"" (if you could call it that) was horrible smelling. I know it's a great place to be seen, but wow, for those prices I'd expect a little more than outside seating. more

Smells from cooking vents make me nauseous 7/13/2010

Everyone seems to know Stephanie's. I used to live close to it so I used it as a landmark when telling people where I lived. If you're looking for an over-priced drink with a view, this is the place (Joe's across the street is the same). Don't get me wrong, you'll have a great view and probably a nice time. If you're looking for dinner, however, I suggest going elsewhere. The menu options are uninspiring and the food itself is bland. The last time I went, I ordered the cuban sandwich. Honestly, of the cuban sandwiches I've tasted from 3 different restaurants in the area (including Dana's Cafe in Woburn, MA and another little place in Pemberton Square), this sandwich was the worst and cost two times more than the others. When I lived in the area, the food vents blasted disgusting smells all over the neighborhood. It made me nauseous and was a huge reason why I left. Stephanie's is just a restaurant with a lot of hype but no real bite. Pros: Outdoor seating Cons: Price, boring menu, average food, vents more

great ppl watching summertime patio 5/6/2010

Stephanies is somewhere you just have to go, theres no getting around it at all, you have to experience it. The patio seating is one of the best spots on a sunny afternoon and inside it has the big booths that are reminiscent of days passed and the feel of fanciness. They have a killer walnut salad that is to die for and everyone orders in. This is the type of place where I brought my high school student for her graduation because it seems perfect for a special occasion. The staff are also very attentive, which is something I always pick up Pros: patio, salads Cons: prices more

A true favorite! 4/19/2010

I love Stephanie's. I've been to the restaurant several times (always for lunch) and never had a bad experience. I almost always order the salad with seared tuna, which is delicious! I highly recommend it. I have also tried other fish and bok choy, which was delicious as well. It is often a place I've gone for celebrating something special, such as a professional accomplishment, or when a friend visits from out of town. I love the outdoor tables in the summer. Stephanie's is located right on Newbury Street, so it is a great location. A fantastic choice for lunch downtown. Pros: Delicious food, great fresh selection, outdoor seating more

Favorite place to splurge for lunch in the summer 4/13/2010

My 3 fabulous supervisors decided to take me here for my 21st birthday lunch. These ladies work in the fashion & editorial industry, so I knew I wouldn't be let down. Stephanie's was so cute when I walked in, with all of it's fancy decor and dim lighting. It was wintertime so I especially loved the fireplace and how there seemed to be endless amounts of booths (I always tend to request booths, they're just comfier/more spacious). Our server was friendly and attentive, and she helped my supervisors decide what should be my first legal drink. An elegant and princess pink prosecco for me, haha. It was delicious. Strong bloody marys and various other drinks for the rest of the party (it was onlyabout noon, which adds bonus points to Stephanie's for having a fully stocked bar promptly available that early). For my entree I ordered the grilled jumbo shrimp salad and it was delicious. It's a very simple dish but you wouldn't believe how easy it is to mess up/how many times I've been given overly charred grilled shrimp. One of my supervisors got the ahi tuna tartar and it looked divine! We also got a free dessert to share since it was my birthday, but I can't really remember what it was since this was over a year ago. What I do recall the most is how great of a time I had here, and I've been wanting to go back ever since! Sure, this place is pricey but it's Newbury St. so what do you expect. Also a reason why I prefer this place for lunch/brunch rather than dinner. Also, the outdoor seating is extremely popular in the summertime/warmer days, primarily because it offers some of the best people watching - so that's another reason Stephanie's is definitely a daytime restaurant in my book. It's also great for just about any type of group - bonding time with girlfriends, a romantic lunch setting, a fancy family meal (though I've seen small children here I don't really see it fitting), and business meetings. So really, whoever you are, if you appreciate a good meal in a great, laid back but plush setting, I definitely recommend trying Stephanie's out! Enjoy :) Pros: fancy, lots of space, outdoor seating Cons: obviously pricey (it's Newbury St. people) more

Amazing seared swordfish! 10/16/2009

The new menu at Stephanie's is simply AMAZING! I would recommend the Seared Swordfish to anyone that is looking for a satisfying meal where you are full, but not over full. The portions are perfect and the whipped parsnip's sweet taste compliment the fish very well. I even had room to have the pumpkin cheesecake for dessert! The cheesecake was perfectly whipped with just the right amount of hot caramel on the plate. Kudos to the chef on a superb dish! Pros: Everything about it! Cons: Nothing more

Great Newbury St. dining experience 9/6/2009

Stephanie's is an experience unique to Boston and a must do for tourists and natives alike. I took visiting relatives here and we all enjoyed it immensely. The food was actually very good with a remarkable variety on the menu. My softshell crab was ever so slightly oily and a little flavorless, but they must have put an entire avocado in my salad and the dressing was delicious. My daughter was very happy with her chicken sandwich as was my sister with her crab cake. We found the service helpful, friendly and prompt. But of course the best part was the wonderfully fun sidewalk dining on Newbury St. itself. Pros: fun people watching, good comfort food Cons: can be long wait more

Overrated 8/21/2009

I'm not sure why I keep giving this place another chance. Everything I've ever ordered (even sandwiches and salads) are subpar. It is entirely overpriced for the food quality and I've yet to have a decent server. It's definately a place I'm going to leave for the tourists from now on. more

Nice simple food; slow & thoughtless service 8/1/2009

It is sad the after so long in the business this restaurant continues to have such ineffective service. The food is good when you are in the mood for simple comfort food. The service and price kills the deal. Each time I eat at this place I am reminded that I am paying for location & nothing more. Here is how the usual visit goes: Though there are many open tables you wait 3-10 min at the door. You are seated and wait 3-5 min for your sever to get to you. Once he or she does arrive, you place an order for drinks and apps and wait 10 min for something to drink. It is not what you ordered, but bread and water are at least on the table now. Then, knowing that you will have to wait for more drinks, you walk to the bar and pay $25-30 for two good drinks. By the time you get back, the first drinks you ordered are still not at your table. In short, you wait and wait and wait. Finally, you will have some simple nice warm feeling comfort food. Then, you will wait and wait and wait for the bill. Conclusion, this is an over priced and over rated experience for food I could have had at home in about the same amount of time. Pros: good and simple foods Cons: slow & thoughtless service. more

Great place for Brunch 6/28/2009

We went in for brunch on a Sunday. We had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated and opted to sit at the bar for a couple of drinks. The cocktails were very good and strong but quite expensive, 2 for $27.50. We were seated and it took a while for the waitress to attend to us. They have a ton of wait staff but service was still slow and the staff seemed very disorganized. We were served a huge bread basket with a variety of breads including scones, raisin bread, crackers and more, I've never seen anything quite like this. Though it turned out to be a good distraction, as it took a very long time for the entrees to come out. We ordered a couple of sandwiches, the tuna melt and the grilled chicken. The tuna melt was superior, but the chicken was still quite good. However, this was all overshadowed by the warm caramel apple bread pudding dessert served with ice cream ( we had another dessert it was blueberry peach something). The bread pudding was mouth-gasmic to the pallet. Apparently it had won the top five desserts in Boston and totally deserves this honor. We definitely recommend Stephanie's on Newbury. Pros: Desserts Cons: service a bit slow more

Looked good, but really terrible 6/22/2009

We visited as a group of 10 on a Saturday night. They were slow to get our order - we had to ask several times for them to come over. Whilst taking our order, the waiter decided to go and deal with a request from another table. The food was then slow to arrive. My clam chowder was far too thick and flavourless. Several of us ordered steaks; everybody was given the wrong one in terms of cooking, and let's just say that my version of rare involves the meat still being pink. My steak was also so oily that I couldn't finish it. Surprisingly, we decided not to take dessert. Group consensus: the worst meal we have had in a long time. Pros: Nice decor Cons: Too many cons for this box more

enjoyable year round 10/22/2008

in the summer it's all about sitting outside and watching the newbury shoppers stroll while enjoying a yummy asian chicken salad. now that the weather is turning, i look forward to Stephanie's cozy fireplace and eating the less healthy, but delicious comfort food. more

Terrific 9/18/2008

Stephanie's on Newbury is truly dedicated to ensuring the best possible service and food. It's one of the most popular and highest grossing restaurants in Boston, priding themselves with their slogan "sophisticated comfort food", and it really is a great menu. Although I also work at this restaurant, I wouldn't plug it unless I knew it was terrific. I would recommend the Stephi Burger, Chinese Chicken Salad, Scallops, or anything really. Make sure to check our their Sunday brunch menu. more

Nice Brunch 8/26/2008

Stefanies is a great place to have a leisurely brunch with friends or significant other...the food is tasty and they have enough of a variety for everyone...they make a great bloody mary and if its after noon - Id recommend their lemonade cocktail...its so refreshing! I especially love the outdoor seating to people watch...the restaurant is perfectly located on Newbury street so after eating and people watching you can shop til you drop! Pros: Great locale Cons: Expensive more

Atrocious Food 7/27/2008

After reading restaurant reviews for years, I finally felt compelled to write after receiving such a terrible meal last night at Stephanie's. Quite simply, the food was awful. My fiance's New England Clam Chowder was as thick as wallpaper paste, and my Summer House Salad was nothing more than a half a head of iceberg lettuce drenched in balsamic dressing. Moving on to the main course, I ordered the ""special"", which was Mahi Mahi over ""Spanish Rice"". The fish was overcooked, and there was nothing ""Spanish"" about the rice; it was simply white rice mixed with peas and corn. Although served with a lime sauce, it was flavorless. Speaking of flavorless, my fiance's Cavatappi Chicken was a disaster. No taste, and quite frankly, disgusting looking chicken. All in all, a terrible meal. Much, much better options available in Boston. Cons: The perfect combination of terrible food and high prices more
