Editorial review from Citysearch 5/28/2013

I am so happy that we found St. Stephen's. Every day my children (1st grade and pre-k) come home excited about what they learned at school. The academics are superb. The students are taught broad concepts and problem solving rather than memorizing facts for a test. The lower school provides an excellent Montessori program that has allowed my children to thrive. We are very excited for the new International Middle Years Curriculum and the IB program in the High School. St. Stephen's is truly diverse and very international. Each child is proud of what makes him or her unique and interested in the differences in each other. The community is warm and open. In addition to excellent academics, St. Stephen's is committed to a vibrant fine arts, music and drama program. more

Best High School I could have asked for 10/5/2009

As an Alum of Saint Stephen's, I can confidently say that I received an incredible education here. I loved high school, it was a total blast. Being that it is a Montessori school (or as Montessori as a high school can be), it pushes it's students to be proactive and responsible for their own education. The system is also incredibly beneficial for personal growth and achieving self-actualization. The teachers and staff are incredibly patient and supportive, but are not afraid to offer helpful advice and push their students to excel. I found my curriculum to be incredibly rigorous and hands on, and by the time I graduated I felt totally prepared for college, as well as the real world. Pros: Engaging curriculum, wonderful community, endless possibilit Cons: Not for the unmotivated more

Orientation and Primary Levels are FANTASTIC! 2/13/2009

I love this school! We have now been at SS for a year and a half and are very pleased with the results. I have two children who have absolutely flourished under the direction of both Primary and Orientation classes. The head of the 18 month - 3 year old class, Lou has treated my child as her own, she is amazingly nurturing. At 2 years old he knew the entire alphabet and could count to 20. Yesterday I asked him what 2+4 was and he KNEW! My 5 year old has learned so much under Ms Gladis! She makes learning fun and interesting! I don't know how she does it but all I have to say to get a situation under control is, ""I think Ms Gladis would like to know this"" and my child immediately shapes up. (and no, she does not have to raise her voice) I have spoken with other parents and we all agree that she evokes awe and respect in ALL her students. Pros: Loving, very intimate, goes thru high school, car drop off Cons: needs EXTERIOR face lift.(not interior), too many days out of class more

DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO THIS SCHOOL 12/3/2008

On the surface this school looks very impressive. That is until you actually get to see the school for what it really is. My personal experience is that my childs acedemics slipped greatly espically in math. Also the head of the school is not a very friendly woman. My child did ejnoy the environment very much at all. It seemed as if she was becoing very withdrawn. more

A poorly managed educational system 4/4/2007

St. Stephen's Episcopal School Houston is divided into several different segments. The age range begins with children as young as 18 months and ends with young adults as old as 18 years. I have experienced the high school system personally. The high school is run by a idiotic woman who imposes her democratic ideas on her English students. In addition, although a private school, the teachers enjoy wasting class time by criticizing a student in front of his or her peers. The teachers seem to be unable to hold off their ""corrective criticism"" until the end of the period. The high school has no problem breaking the student and teacher hand book rules, however, students who disobey these rules receive harsh punishment. I have many personally experiences along with peer experiences that I would share, but I feel would be inappropriate. I, along with others, would not recommend this school. Those who run the school have absolute power over the students and use it excessively. The high school is just not a good educational facility. Pros: Excellent Soccer coach, Science teacher, and Spanish teacher. Cons: Faculty, too much power and freedom taken away from students, not enough athletics, low athletic budget, faculty disregard for the teacher and student handbook, no athletic facilities, etc... more
