Great for an old well known spot for out of towners who have heard about it. Quality is inconsistent and steak has no taste. Portions are huge though. When I moved here 6 years...

REALLY !!! This place is #1 in Indy hands down 2/7/2012

DO YOU REALLY NEED A REVIEW FOR THIS PLACE !!!! It is the #1 place to eat and be seen when you are in Indy. During SUPERBOWL even some celebrities had a hard time getting Reservation. The people of Indianapolis are so lucky to have a place like this. Philadelphia doesn't even have a steakhouse like St Elmo's that even comes close. The place has a history that goes back to the year 1902........gee I wonder why they have been in business so long.............could it be the staff......maybe ...the staff is over the top and very helpful....but not that old.......could it be that this is the place to be seen...could be....could it be the bar area is well represented as a world class bar....could be....but truly the food is to die for......from the shrimp cocktails to the steak.....it is all great. ......well done guys. Now I have more of a reason to come back and visit Indy again. PS YOUR HOOSIER HOSPITALITY WAS AWESOME Jerry Ehrlich, from the Great City of Philadelphia, PA more

EVERYTHING THAT GLITTERS ISN'T GOLD 9/19/2007

Had dinner with a group of 10, I always heard that St.Elmo's was the place to be. more

Well derserved 'best of' rating 9/2/2007

My friends and I enjoyed the best steak and service ever. We still talk about the experience and are planning a return trip to Indy just to enjoy St. Elmo's. We're fairly well traveled and have enjoyed many steakhouses across the country but found that this steak deserves it's 'best of' rating. It is not intended for children. Thank goodness. Pros: Delicious Cons: Crowded more

One of the most OVER-RATED. 7/2/2007

One of the most OVER RATED and WORST SERVICE in Indianapilis......Not tastey, bad service, too crowded, too much pusshing, too many smokers, loud talking, TO MANY DRUNKS FALLING OVER YOU AND TELLING OFF COLOR IN FRONT OF CHILDREN....... more

Go for the steak, eat the shrimp cocktail 10/26/2006

When you reach this quality level of steak house, you can guarantee that meat will be dreamy. What this steakhouse offers over all of the others in Indy, is the most unbelievable, fabulous, shrimp cocktail. The shrimp is huge and the horseradish sauce will make you head sweat with delight! Pros: Shrimp Cocktail more

Awesome Steaks 7/22/2006

Great Restaurant in downtown Indy. I recommend the excellent Prime Rib. You get a choice of tomato juice or bean soup with your meal (Get the bean soup--you won't be disappointed--even if you don't like bean soup). The service is top notch. It is a little pricey, but you are guaranteed not to go away hungry. Pros: Great Food, Great Bar Service, Great Service Cons: No on-site parking (Valet available or nearby garages) more

Great service and great food enough said 5/21/2006

Classic steakhouse surrounded by cool old school decor. The steaks are prime, the shrimp cocktail is increadible, a truly must try. Good wine list, and great service all compliment this local more

Great service but... 4/10/2006

The service and waitstaff were great...the food, no. The potato was served to me cold. Not even lukewarm, cold. My wifes' strip steak was cooked to med-rare, not med-well as she had ordered. Now here's the best part, my steak, which I ordered med-well, was med, which I could live with, I mean I started eating it, and it was fine...until after about 4-5 bites or so. Which is when I noticed something a bit odd. I originally dismissed it as being fat or something, and not to go into too much detail here, it wasn't. Long story short, I was disgusted, I was offered something else, but my appetite was long gone by then, they took it off my bill, and that was that. Some $40 steak! Pros: service, location, waitstaff Cons: food, price, food more

Great ambiance, good food 3/25/2006

This is a great restraunt to get a taste of the local scene. Here's the low down: Ambiance - Great ambiance, the bar is classic and bustling, while the dining area is perfect for a romantic dinner or group get together. Food- The shrimp cocktail is very good, but be aware the cocktail sauce is very spicy. The steak was good, but it did come out over done, I sent it back and the next one was delicious. I'd give the steak a 9 out of 10, with Ruth's Chris getting a 10. Service - My server, Chuck, was very attentive but not over bearing. The over cooked steak put service to the test. I mentioned that the steak was good, but overdone. He apologized, got me a new steak fast (which was cooked perfectly), and comped mea $12 glass of wine. Ill be back! Pros: Service, Atmosphere, Wine List more

Don't hate - St. Elmo's is AWESOME! 3/23/2006

I don't know why no one gives Indy credit for doing things right, but this is one place that deserves praise. I'm sorry to those of you that had negative experiences - especially on a visit to town - but as an Indy native whose been many times, I would highly recommend it to anyone. The shrimp cocktail alone is worth the trip - the spiciest cocktail sauce you'll ever have! - and the wedge salad (way before everyone else jumped on the trend!) and surf & turf are phenominal. Really cool ""old school"" experience in the heart of downtown. Pros: shrimp cocktail, 'old school' vibe, Indy institution more

No I don't want the Shrimp Cocktail 12/18/2005

After repeatedly telling the waiter we didn't want the cocktail the service went downhill from there. My Prime Rib was overcooked as was my wife's strip. Terrible rolls and awful sides. Navy Bean or tomato juice? Iceberg lettuce not Romaine? I really wanted to like this place. I live in Chicago but go to Colts games, and it came highly recommended. What type of steak place doesn't offer a T-Bone? Overall, overhyped and overpriced. Sorry but we won't be returning. Many more downtown Indy restaurants to choose from rather than Elmo's. Pros: nice atmosphere, good wine list, Close to Dome Cons: bad service, average steaks, rock hard rolls more

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE 11/19/2005

There were six of us at dinner. 3 out of 6 had problems with their steak. My steak had a vein running through it bigger than any of my own. Fat galore on a 34 dollar steak! I've honestly had a better steak for 9.99 at Logans Steakhouse! Rolls were extremely hard even for hard rolls! Entrance is smokey and over crowded you can't move. We walked down 3 flights of steps to our table in some small back room. My sister who came all the way from Cinncinnatti to eat here, complained to the management and got a $50 gift certificate for her next time. What next time? A $100 meal for two....the steak should be edible! Horrible...Horrible...Horrible! What a waste of money. I'm sure someone else will come on here and post from St. Elmos so their score stays high! Pros: wait staff, water was decent Cons: Horrible steak, HUGE vein in steak, Fatty steak more

Over-rated 10/31/2005

After much anticipation to dine here, I found it overpriced and disappointing. First, I could not be seated until my ""date"" arrived. (He was parking and was enough of a gentleman to drop me at the door...) Next, if I heard the suggestive sell of ""try our shrimp cocktail"" one more time, I was going to hold up a sign stating, ""No, I don't want fries with that..."" The food was fair. In all, it was very overpriced for the quality. I have traveled and dined extensively and would not visit here again. The only bright spot here was our waiter. He was immensely gracious, made a lovely wine recommendation and kept my husband's food warm while he had to go outside momentarily to answer a cell call. Pros: Waiter Cons: Cost, Food, Pretentious seating more

Don't miss 10/26/2005

Great place. Food was outstanding, wine selection was unbelievable. service was great, price was what you would expect. In my opinion if you are going to Indy for one night and had to choose where to eat, this should be the place as much for the history as anything else, although the ""anything else"" certainly stands on its own. Pros: evrything more

Awesome Steak & Service 10/24/2005

First time to St. Elmos. Saw a famous QB and his family, found out they (men) liked Cigars and luckily had some good ones, my nephew was floored when he got the autograph. Well on to the food and service, steak was one of the best, my personal fav. is Chop House in Chicago, but this place comes close, first class service. Highly Recommended! more

Over-rated steaks 7/12/2005

Visited 2 times and ordered fillets (which had come highly recommended). Below average steaks both times. First time, it tasted of meat tenderizer, 2nd time it was tasteless. The service was fantastic, but it can't make up for the poor quality of meat. I am very disappointed in my visits and would not recommend their steaks. Pros: Service, Atmosphere Cons: Steak Quality, Over-priced more

User review by ham56 6/6/2005

St Elmos is a great throwback to the classic steakhouse. You can often find Peyton Manning or somebody similar at the bar and the shrimp cocktail has a horseradish sauce that will clear any sinus congestion. Our waiters have always been wonderful and knowledgeable, but maybe a bit gruff in the tradition of the Palm or one of the NY steakhouses. The wine cellar is wonderful -- ask for a tour after dinner. Plan to spend some time and some money, but savour the food and the atmosphere -- no place in Chicago or NY has a leg up on it for either food or mood (loud, but sociable). Pros: food, portion size (huge), wine list Cons: parking, crowds, noise more
