Hey Tish, \r Beef mix was a combination of ground beef, textured vegetable protein, salt, pepper, beef flavoring and water. Don't know the brand or flavor of the tvp but no doubt it had msg flavor added. \r \r \r more

GO FOR THE PHO!!!BEST IN AREA 4/2/2011

It is probably true that this is no longer the old Speedy's of yore BUT it is now one of the BEST Pho (YES! PHO is finally here in Norfolk!) (or Vietnamese Soup for the uninitiated)establishments in the area and whose taste is certainly comparable to Pho79 in Virginia Beach and CHEAPER ($6 for a small bowl and $7 for a large vs. a dollar more in Va. Beach). The Vietnamese subs are also excellent as are the spring rolls--all ingredients fresh, authentic and tasty. I also find the owners and cooks much more friendly than the Va. Beach folks. My husband go once a week and just recently are noticing that more people are ordering the EXCELLENT Vietnamese food rather than what clearly looks like the more mediocre Mexican fare. The owner should simply rename the place Pho09 (when the change took place) or get change Speedy's sombrero and to a Vietnamese straw hat! Also, those of you who miss Speedy's Mexican: TRY THE PHO!!!! more

Yuck!!! 5/6/2009

When I walked into Speddy's (just like Will) I knew something was wrong, and when I got home and took my first bite, I wanted to cry. It was NOT Speddy's. Those great chips & dip had been replaced with some kind of neon orange nacho cheese. I regret not asking for a sample first. I guess I wanted to believe that everything was the same. I've gone to Speddy's for over 16 years, and I sorry to see that it's gone. To bad I brought my food home, because I'd love to have gotten my money back and gone to Taco Bell. Cons: everything more

Speedy's finally ends...again! 2/17/2009

Just stopped by Speddy's 2/17/09 on my way home from work, as I do every week or two, to get a couple of burritos and a large chip & dip...and as soon as I pulled up I knew soething was wrong. I have not seen alot of cars there lately, but then again they are never packed. On the window was a new sign for a Vietnamese Noodle Soup kitchen. I went in and asked about it and they told me the restaurant was going to be both Speedy's and Vietnamese. I ordered and waited longer than I have ever waited at Speedy's before. When I got home and unwrapped the burrito I noticed it was very hefty and stuffed full, but that first bite told the tale--it was awful. The beef used is not the same, the 'Speedy's' taste was GONE! The chips & dip were equally disappointing. Those of you who remember when Speedy's closed before, became a rib shack, and switched back to Speedy's know how I feel. It was a good run of years since then and I always said I would not be able to live without a Speedy burrito...and that day has come. I can at least make them at home very similar. Die hard Speedy fans I regret to tell you it is over...again and I do not believe it will return as before. Sorry to bring the bad news. The only defense I will allow them is they tried to really give your money's worth on the size of the portions, but it IS NOT SPEEDY'S! I ate less than half of one, only a few of the chips/dip and I threw the rest out. I firmly predict that it will be exclusively Vietnamese in the coming weeks. I may even go there for the Noodle soup, but NEVER again for Mexican. Another great, rare place to eat is finally in it's death throws. Pros: Good size portions Cons: Completely different taste and products used, awful more

Speedy's is the place 8/13/2005

I first ate at Speedy's back in 1979. It is there that owner Jim/Janet Taylor introduced me to eating hot peppers. Since then Jim/Janet have retired and pulled back to only one store. After 20 years I went back to Norfolk and found Speedy's food to be the same great food that I remember. It's not Classy, but it is #1 in the burrito business, right up there with Taco Bueno in Texas. Pros: Food Taste, cost, good parking Cons: only one location more

Speedy Gonzales 1/21/2005

This is not for a family night out place. It's strickly lunch or food on the go cusine. You want cheap Mexican food that doesn't taste like Taco Bell, this is the place. Combo burritos are killer, absolutely killer. Call your order in; the lunch crowd is huge. Pros: cheap, fast, lots of parking more
