Not worth it. 8/4/2012

I've been going to Special Effects for years, usually one stylist in particular. She does a good job with my hair and she's really nice but every single time I ask for a different style and she does my hair exactly the same, no matter what I ask for. And god forbid I try to get my hair done on one of her days off. The woman who gets everyone who doesn't ask for a particular stylist is, I think, the owner and everytime she's cut my hair she's been exceptionally rude and the cut/style wasnt anything special. I haven't been back for a year but I doubt it's changed much. It hasn't for the five years I've been a customer there. Although I'm sure their prices have gone up. They micro-charge for everything so make sure they don't dry your hair or style it... It'll cost you an extra $15-20. more

acrylic nails 12/28/2010

After being recommended to Special Effects, I had acrylic nails put on. By the 5th day the acrylic was already lifting. I was away from home and had them refilled but called the salon when I returned to tell them. I was surprised that I was not offered a refund or have my nails refilled for free next time. I expected more from a well-established salon. more

An Expensive joke! 10/16/2010

Ok. So they got the wanna be NY look. You get music, coffee, tea, water, and a magazine. Thats great. Ok so...what else-let's see. I got my roots done. Roots done, hair washed, a trim, and blowdry. $120.00. No joke. I question the girl when I got the bill and she said next time she won't blow dry my hair because they charge for that too. Did I mention that 120.00 bucks didn't cover the tip. Also, the job itself, hmmmm. I'm 30 and I've been getting my hair blonde since I was 20. I get my roots done every few months. Did she blow me away by putting bleach on my roots like everyone else had...not really. So after her- I went to a salon in Englewood. Roots done, hair washed and trimmed. Blow dry-and guess what eyebrows waxed. $65.00 bucks and she did just as good as of a job as the oh not so fabulous, not New York, not Paul Mitchell himself salon. No thanks special effects. You must be joking with your prices. I did tend to see a lot of yuppy looking stay at home moms that look like they live of their husbands check. So if you work for a living and are not bored with your money and don't want to throw it away. Go to any other salon. more

Couldn't be happier with this salon! 5/1/2010

I moved here from another state and searched through many salons in Troy until I finally found Special Effects. The front desk staff was professional and courteous. My stylist was very friendly and professional. I finally found a stylist that actually listened to me and cut my hair just how I asked her to do it. And my color was gorgeous!! I couldn't be happier with this beautiful salon and will definately be going back! In my opinion, the best salon in Troy,OH!! more

High priced Salon!!! 11/12/2009

Good: The way the place is decorated.. Bad: Service was terrible, the prices are unafforable in this economy. They act like they are Paris Hilton's personally stylist.. Improvements: Just shut it down!!. Other: Would not recommend this place to no one!!!. more

Hope their spa is better than their salon 8/15/2005

I had a haircut at Special Effects, and it was by far the most expensive haircut I’ve ever had. It cost $105 to have my hair highlighted and cut, and that was a couple years ago! Unfortunately, I didn’t even get a decent haircut for that price. I specifically explained repeatedly that I did not want huge chunks of color since I often wear my hair pulled back. I explained that I wanted the highlighted sections of hair to be very small so it would all blend together and not look extremely obvious. My hair had definite stripes, and they were bleach blonde. It looked absolutely ridiculous—especially when I tried to pull my hair back—and the hairdresser was so proud of it. Also, I don’t feel like I was pampered the way I would expect for such an expensive haircut. I was offered water and a magazine while I waited for the hair dye to set. That’s it. Granted, it’s more than you might get at Fantastic Sam’s, but I’ve gotten more attention at salons that cost 1/3 what this place charges. I’ve also heard complaints from friends who have gotten updo’s here for special occasions and weren’t happy with the results. Maybe their spa services are better, but I would definitely not recommend this place for a hair. more
