Spanky's tricks! 4/16/2006

Although the name Spanky's does not make you think "class," in the evenings, Spanky's is actually a very nice restaurant. It's on the corner of Franklin St. and Columbia so the view is great. There is seating upstairs as well. I think it's a great place to go on a date or with a group of friends, but it's a bit crowded on weekend evenings. Also, their Angel Hair pasta is very good. more

Spanky's 4/3/2006

Spanky's restaurant is one of my all time favorite places to eat on Franklin street. It's a little nicer than some of the other restaurants nearby, and makes a really great date spot. They have a very diverse and tasty menu with quality food. The atmosphere is on the upscale side and quiet. more

Meh... it'll do 3/30/2006

I have been to Spanky's several times - always expecting it to be better than it ever is. It looks and feels like it ought to have a good hamburger, but it doesn't. They're dry and overcooked. It makes me sad. They do have a great room upstairs that you can reserve for group gatherings - and there's a bar up there too. It is a very good set up. The other good thing about Spanky's is the location. It is so much fun to get a table by the front windows and people watch as the college students and random assorted people pass by. more

Good Steaks 2/3/2006

Spanky's is located on the corner of Franklin Street, right next to the Starbucks. You can sit at one of the corner tables and watch the students and citizens of Chapel Hill as they hurry around town with their busy lives. Spankys is a non-smoking facility for those of us who cannot stand second hand smoke. They serve outrageously delicious steaks at dinner time and scrumptious sandwiches throughout the day. They have a bar downstairs and several televisions if you want to watch the game. more

Great location, pretty good food 8/31/2005

Spanky's has a great location-it's right on Franklin Street-- and a nice atmosphere, with lots of Carolina students and alumni frequenting the restaurant. I really like the polished oak bar and booths. The food is pretty good-your typical American style with sandwiches, salads, a couple of pasta dishes, etc. As I recall, the potato salad was a favorite among the last group I went there with. It's a nice place to meet for lunch with a couple of friends, and wouldn't be inappropriate for a casual business lunch. I know they have a full bar, but I've only been there for early lunches, so I can't attest to anything other than its existence. more

Classy Franklin St. Eatery 8/29/2005

If you're looking for a lunch spot on Franklin Street that's a step above the usual hot dog or subway sandwich, but don't want to entirely break the bank, you should go to Spanky's! Situated on the corner of Columbia and Franklin, you get a great view for people-watching if you're lucky enough to score a window seat (particularly on the 2nd floor). The food is your usual burgers, pasta, salads, etc, but a definite small step above the level of just another burger joint. Particularly good are their pasta and salad dishes, but my personal favorite is their yummy Veggie Burger. more

My favorite Chapel Hill restaurant 7/31/2005

This is far and away the best restaurant on Franklin Street. It is also a bar, but I'm not a big drinker so I can't comment on that. The food is spectacular- they have a wide variety of foods; you can check out their menu online. I highly recommend Spanky's steak sandwich- it's truly the best I've ever had. We have always had good service. The restaurant is within walking distance to UNC. It is also kid-friendly- they have paper and crayons for the kids and a good kids menu- we always get the spaghetti marinara for the kids. Oh and I almost forgot, they have really good fries, so it's worth it to add the fries for $1. more

Great food, nice atmosphere 6/15/2005

I have visited several other Spanky's in college towns. They all have the same menu, which is pretty extensive. They offer something for everyone--salads, sandwiches, entrees, and some wonderful desserts and drink specials. The prices vary at each location, I've noticed. No matter where, though, the prices are reasonable for the portions you get. The atmosphere is nice--lots of pictures on the wall. The service has always been great and we enjoy going there. more

Spankys is good food at a moderate price 5/17/2005

Spanky's offers an exceptional menu. It is casual dining at its best as it has a large menu selection. We love the sandwich choices and the dessert menu is impressive. For the price you pay, the portions are mediocre. We feel that they are a bit overpriced for the food portions but nonetheless, we do enjoy it there. They have great happy hour specials on both alcoholic beverages and appetizers. We recommned their potatoe skins--they're good and large enough to fill you up as a meal. The service is average and there can be a long wait for your food depending on the time. more
