So, I had been seeing Jimmy at Salon Diva(Evolour) for years. He's a wonderful stylist and the location was great (close to me in the Roscoe Village area). Evolour was recently taken over by new owners and Jimmy made a move to a salon at Broadway and Diversey. This wasn't so great for me and my commute, but I was willing to make the move for Jimmy. Well, my luck changed when I found out that Jimmy will be here(Southport Hair) 2 days a week. He is here on Tuesday's and Thursday's-give him a try, you won't be disappointed!!! After spending my college days going to the HairCuttery, I decided that spending about 10 bucks more would be worth it if I got a good cut every time. I tried some of the other salons in the area, but I ended up paying upwards of 40 bucks for crappy service and a crappy head of hair. I decided to go here on a whim after reading the positive reviews. The staff are extremely friendly and caring, and I have never been asked so many questions about what I wanted in a haircut. I was fed up with salons in Chicago. Over the last 9 years, I have been to about 15 or 20 salons, never returning. After scouring Citysearch for a reputable hair salon in my neighborhood, I decided to make an appointment with Southport Hair Studio. I was able to get in one day after I called, on a Saturday no less, and when I arrived, Tip greeted me immediately. I didn't have to wait even 10 seconds! Tip sat me down and we chatted about what I wanted done. He really seemed to know what style I wanted to achieve. Under an hour later, I had the best cut ever! Tip was a master with my long layers and he cut my bangs exactly as I wanted them. The reasonable price included a shampoo, cut, blow-dry, and style. The salon's environment was comfortable and low-key - not uptight or snobby. Products for sale were arranged on shelves and readily available for purchase, but I was not pressured in the slightest to buy them. The salon's staff was very friendly as well. I would recommend this salon to anyone and I plan on returning myself. And because I didn't feel pressured to buy any products on the spot, I just may go back and pick some up. more

I would highly recommend this salon. I went in with my roommate and we were treated like royalty. We even discovered that there is a $10 discount for students, which can never hurt. Vera was our stylist and was very sweet and truly did what we asked of her when it came to cutting our hair. In the hustle and bustle of Chicago it was nice to come to a place with small town charm and genuine people. Plus I got a great haircut and some fantastic product. Go here. Tip is the very best there is! He has been doing my hair for over 20 years and I would follow him to the ends of the earth (or end of my hair). I currently live on the south side by White Sox Park but trek up north to get my hair done right. The atmosphere in the salon is like sitting around at someone's house everyone is so friendly. I have been having my hair styled by Vera for as many years as she has been a stylist. I live in the Western Burbs and travel into the city for hair highlights and cuts for myself and cuts for my daughter. It has always been well worth the road trip!! I found this place a few years ago and even though I moved to the South loop area, I still make the trek to this northside salon. Tip is an awesome stylist/colorist with a wacky sense of humor to boot. And you can always count on Regan to give you THE best manicures/pedicures around. Southport Hair Studio is one of those salons like the one in Steel Magnolias. When you come in, the atmosphere is so inviting, not to mention the talented staff. Tip and Vera both have over twenty years experience. Regan gives the best manicures and pedicures I've ever had. They last for weeks! It's so hard to find stylists that you can get to know and who want to get to know you. They make going to get your hair and nails done a fun experience again! Be careful with parking, though.
