Amazing value for five course french meal in LES. 2/15/2009

Amazing value for five course french meal in LES. Salmon preparation was excellent and dessert selection was exquisite. Ideal for a romantic meal for two or for a small intimate gathering. more

Bad experience 2/4/2009

I ate here recently with my friend who lives in the neighborhood. I got really sick after having dinner here; the food was NOT fresh. Considering we were the only table on a Friday night should have warned me right away. The place was dead so I guess the food is old. I had Seafood Corn Bisque Soup & Steamed Atlantic Salmon. Wouldn't be surprised if this place shuts down soon due to no traffic. Pros: none Cons: got sick more

What a Find! 12/3/2008

What great fun we had and a nice dining experience from the wait staff to the food. Service was attentive, yet not overbearing allowing us time to enjoy our friends and food. I love that the tables are spaced appropriately so you don't feel you are dining with your neighbor and the table for two is roomy to fit all the plates yet intimate enough that you can still hold hands across the table. The candle lighting is calming and gives the feeling of being in a tavern somewhere in the country. With so many good dishes, and new ones always popping up on the menu, it is hard to choose a favorite. For starters it is a toss up between the fresh red pepper pasta with morel sauce and the vegetable terrine with chive cream cheese. We were privileged to sample a special of pan fried monk fish in a lobster sauce. For entrees it is a coin toss between the braised short ribs with carrot and roasted cauliflower and the steamed fish atop homemade borscht. AND THEN COMES DESSERTS! Chocolate tart to die for, lime squares-yum, pumpkin and pecan pies all adorned with special sides. Every thing we tried was divine, especially those little cookies you get with the check. Personally I don't care for sorbet, I just don't really consider that dessert, but the flavors they pair together are unique and refreshing. The menu is constantly changing and growing and we are excited to go back to experience more of a good thing. The best thing of all is the $27.50 prix fixe menu. It is quite a steal for all you get. more

One of the best meals that i have had in a long time 11/23/2008

I came to Sonia Rose for the first time on Saturday night for dinner. The ambiance was very lovely, subtle, and was just the right amount of upscale for the lower east side. They have a pre-fixe three course dinner menu and BYOB so i wasnt sure exactly how i was going to like the food because i can be a picky eater. I started off with the Salmon cakes which were so good that i loathed to have to give some to my dining companion. If I was at home i would have licked my place. Then i had the Hangar steak which came with brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes. But this dinner dish was not at all what i expected. The brussel sprouts (which normally i would shy away from) were cooked to perfection, dark dark green and very good. The mashed potatoes were creamy and somehow different than plain ol potatoes. The meat was so tender that i didnt even need a steak knife to cut it. Then came desert which was pecan pie from heaven. All in all this was one of the best meals that i have had in new york in a long time. Everything was perfect from the location, the space, ambiance, service, and of course the amazing food. I HIGHLY reccomend this restaurant to anyone who wants to experience this kind of high level dining with a seriously low price tag. Fantastic!! Pros: Amazing food & BYOB more
