First and Last Time! 9/24/2010

When I checked my bill I noticed that the bottle of Cabernet we ordered which tasted like cigar smoke was $20 more than the price on the menu. When I pointed this out to our waiter who was rude from the very start, he became defensive and did not apologize for his obvious wrongdoing. The menu is very limited so there's not much choice other than the heavy crusted pizza with a burned bottom. Hardly one of the the ""top 5 pizzas in New York"" they claim to have. The place looks nice but is so small I had to get up from my chair every time someone needed to get by and so close to the next table we couldn't hear our own conversation.\r \r more

Sofia Wine Bar comment 5/24/2010

Will definitely go back! Pros: Lovely place, great wine and staff Cons: Super busy, but that's to be expected more

Best Midtown Spot 3/11/2010

Last night was the third time my girlfriend and I have visited this rustic neighborhood wine bar and as usual it didn't let us down. \r The atmosphere is quaint (perfect for dates), the food fresh, and the waiters are knowledgable & friendly. They let us try a few samples of wine each even though we weren't ordering a bottle! The meatball pizza is by far the best item we've had so far. Thank god there is a slice of the village in midtown. Pros: Everything Cons: None so far more

Fabulous Pizza and Wine 1/27/2010

Great wine bar! I have been here about three or four times and have loved it every time. I have had the pizza with prosciutto, Mac & Cheese with prosciutto and the chocolate cake dessert. All of these dishes are great and come out of the kitchen in a timely manner. This restaurant was my introduction to prosciutto and I have loved it ever since. The space of the restaurant is exposed brick and has a very warm environment, a perfect environment for a relaxed conversation or date. The music selection that the house plays is perfect and quite varied and definitely suites the environment. I've heard everything from Andy Williams to Radiohead there and it has always worked well in the space. \r \r Now on to the wine! Sofia has a very large selection of wine that should suit most any palette. The wine list is always getting updated with new and interesting wines and the staff will offer you a sample of some of the new ones. The best part of this wine selection is that it comes with an excellent staff that is very quickly able to dial in to what taste preferences you have in wine and suggest other great wines to try. I am not a wine expert by any means but they have always been able to find me something I like and that is the most important part of a wine bar and that is why this is one of my favorite wine bars. If you like wine and are in NYC you will not be disappointed by Sofia wine bar.\r \r Pros: Great service and wine more

Love the Wine Here! 1/27/2010

OK. So I am italian. And I love Italian fare. And I dont think there are many places in NYC that do it right. This place does it like my dad does it. You heard it here first. Best Italian Restaurant trhat I know of in NYC. Pros: Wine, Pizza, Meatballs more

OMG...GREAT FIND 1/26/2010

Vinegary...this review is so extreme and FALSE. I experienced the complete opposite during a week night and savor the free wine tastings that the bartender and friendly staff offered me. Also, please keep in mind that I am a world traveler and visited top wineries that offer customers value, and home cooked comfort food just like Sofia Wine Bar. Pros: the pizza, wine, food and everything in between more

At $10 a glass, I did not expect to get a chilled glass of vinegary Burgundy served in a chipped glass! We ordered a pizza that was served burnt and soggy. If you are a connoisseur of fine wine and food I recommend you go elsewhere. Pros: The neighborhood is nice Cons: Overpriced Bad Wine more

Great wine selections 4/19/2009

Cozy and nicely decorated, this place makes you feel right at home. A friendly and informative waiter was very helpful with suggestions, recommendations, and even some ""tasting"". Almost too many wines to choose from, but it's just another reason to return. Highly recommended, even for novice wine lovers!! Can't wait for the alfresco seating!!!!! Pros: Wine, Wine, Wine Cons: Limited menu ( but tasty) more

Cozy, warm and inviting 3/25/2009

Great place for after work drinks. Waiter / service was excellent. Friendly staff. Good music kept at a reasonable volume for holding a decent conversation. What can I say, just the perfect place to go after work with a few friends to chat, snack, drink and unwind. more

One Step Above 3/6/2009

Sofia?s hip-but-classic design is warm and inviting. Things I liked: exposed brick, handsome & comfortable wood carved chairs, engraved crystal wine glasses, extensive wines by the glass or bottle ? tasty and delicious plates of food - good presentation - reasonable price ? European style service ? mixed with great background music combine for one of the best nights out in a long time. I felt as though I was on a date with my husband ? the place really got us going ? I hope he takes me back soon. Loved it!\r \r \r Pros: Just a flat out great date place Cons: nothing more

A Gem 3/6/2009

Delicately designed in a rustic Tuscan Italian look and feel, with a very eclectic wine and beer selection and a pizza to die for. The charming owners have recipes on the menu that make you feel like you are eating a home cooked meal. The tables, lighting and bar are cozy. The music is carefully selected with some old and some new which reflects the wine bar's style. I really loved it and it's a place I would return often. \r \r It's a great date place or even a night with friends.\r \r Pros: Wine Selection, Pizza, Decor Cons: Can get crowded more

Loved everything about it! 3/6/2009

I went with a group of girl friends to Sofia's after work last night, and we all loved it. First and foremost, the wine selection was great: we tried several, and all were tasty and reasonably priced (many glasses around $9-10 and many bottles from around the world between $35-$40). Second, the menu is small, but has something for everyone (soups, pasta, cheese plates, and pizzas) and since us four girls shared all three pizza options, I can honestly say that they are all phenomenal! But most importantly, the staff were all wonderful, from the handsome and charming father-son team of owners, to the attentive and knowledgeable waiters. This place is a great find, perfect for dinner with the girls or a low-key date-night. (Just a quick note: two of the girls almost walked by the place, assuming it was an apartment. But though the sign on the awning is hard to see, this place is definitely worth looking for!) Pros: Best wine selection ever, great food, wonderful service. Cons: While everything on the menu is phenomenal, there aren't many choices there, though they have only been open for a short while, so perhaps that will change? more

Brilliant 3/5/2009

Excellent. Everything about it is great! Highly recommended to all. Excellent wine, excellent food, excellent staff, excellent place. Really. Pros: Food, Wine, Service, Ambiance...Everything more

AMAZING. 3/3/2009

I never take the time to write reviews, but this place is an amazing find. Stumbled upon Sofia Wine Bar on its opening night last Friday and am SO glad I did! The wine list is extensive, the ambiance calming and cozy, and the staff is kind and attentive (without being in your face and annoying). I already know that I will frequently be paying a visit to Sofia, both for an after work glass of wine, as well as for full evenings out with my girlfriends. \r \r We tried a variety of wines by the glass and every one was excellent - The Snake Charmer is the one I recall loving the most. They weren't officially serving food yet on Friday, but the small plates that they brought out on the house were incredibly tasty -- italian meats and cheeses, bruschetta, eggplant...all were wonderful The veggies tasted as if they were fresh from the garden, and each dish tasted homemade. Since my first trip was so great, I went back last night and was able to try the personal pizza and the paninis -- TO. DIE. FOR!!! Also incredible - the spinach dip, which absolutely rivals Houston's for the 'Best Spinach Dip' title.\r \r This is definitely a great date place or a venue for a nice evening out chatting with friends. Can't wait to go back! Pros: Cozy and comfy place. Not pretentious at all. Great food, wine, staff and ambiance. Cons: none. more

Just found this spot 3/3/2009

Went in with my date and i guess this place is new, but ended up having a good time. There was a nice selection of wine and little pizza's were great. Very tasty. Good location, Pros: Great wine selection Cons: None that i noticed more

This cozy little whole in the wall reminds me of this great wine bar I went to in Florence, Italy. The wine selection is insane! They had over 60 wines by the glass alone & the pizza was unlike anything i've had in a long time. The only real problem is, once you walk in you may stay all night. Pros: Wine, pizza, panini's and a spinach dip that i could eat all night. Cons: When they run out of their fresh dough, they don't make anymore! Don't get there too late! more
