Still a great neighborhood hangout 5/20/2011

I am shocked at the negative reviews. I visit Sip 4-5 times a week, and I have never had a bad experience. The food is always good. To be honest, the chef has a unique take on certain dishes, and some people may not like some of the dishes (I for one have never taken to the sweet ""Billionaires Bacon""), but all the dishes are well prepared. Today I had a bowl of the potato leek soup and it was super. As for the service, I have never been treated badly there. Everyone has been pleasant and friendly. If you're looking for a white glove, formal place . . . this isn't it. But if you're looking for a welcoming neighborhood place with very good food, and terrific, if somewhat wacky, atmosphere, then visit Sip. more

Fav place gone seriously bad 9/8/2010

Heartbroken. Don't go here! One of my favorite neighborhood haunts has taken a serious turn for the worse. After a couple of years of great music, tasty food, and good drinks, I've had two bad encounters. Not the food, not the music but the service. Thursday night...buy food, get wine 1/2 price...great deal! Of six wines on the list there are only three available at 7pm...not nearly the end of 1/2 price night. I didn't even come for the 1/2 price wine but thought, why not? Intending to buy a bottle, we ask to try a few wines (the ones we ask for they don't have so we try the remainders). The waiter is patronizing but delivers the samples. We order two of the most expensive food items and a bottle of wine (not great wine but I wanted to support the place). Wine arrives. It's terrible. Food arrives and smells dee-lish as always. Wine is terrible so I ask to order two cocktails instead of the wine ($28 bucks instead of the $10 bottle of wine) and the waiter is outraged. I was even going to pay for the wine. So, $35 in food, $28 cocktails, $10 in wine...a lot of money at sip. The waiter grabs our food from the table and tells us to leave. The punch line...the waiter is the OWNER. Ah...that's how to run a business...one I have supported for a long time and will NEVER again frequent. more

Horrible Service, Uncomfortable Space? 3/29/2009

Small place, shockingly rude service. Table arrangement makes it impossible to navigate. So difficult a friend (w/ a cane) was made to feel out of place by waiters & customers. Another time I waited for a menu for 10 min. The owner yelled at me for not ordering (I was not given a menu!) and for a table rearrangement done by customers before me. He yelled at the next table because a lady opened a candy bar. She explained ""diabetic."" He said he didn't care and she could leave. Shocked, I left. Pros: Decor Cons: Poor Service more

great food, fun atmosphere, fun people all around great 2/18/2009

And 3 course brunch saturdays and sundays including all you can drink mimosas, bloody marys, coffee, tea and juice, cant beat it....Best place in NYC youve prob never heard of more

best hangout in the upper west 12/17/2008

i love sip and if you love cheap yummy food you will too. the staff is awsome and the owner is really cool (and usually there talking and hanging out with guests). the wait staff is sometimes a little short but it is never a problem because the atmoshere is so nice you don't mind waiting a few minutes. the only bad thing that has ever happened to me there is sometimes the music is too loud and i have ended up with no voice by the end of the night. but seriously don't let that stop you. monday is even half price for everything! Pros: people, atmosphere, menu Cons: loud music (only occasionaly) more

Bland and Unpleasant 9/26/2008

I recently made the mistake of trying the food at Sip. Now I know why it's called Sip and not Eat. The coffee tasted average, but my meal (a field green salad with chicken and the daily soup) was tasteless and bizzarely overpriced. The waiter forgot part of my order and, when the salad arrived, it was tiny and drowning in dressing. Yet somehow, this salad cost a stunning $15. Pros: It has wifi Cons: Nasty manager, really tiny and overpriced dishes more

Best Free Tapas in NYC at happy hour 6/19/2008

I love this place. It's just south of 110 on Amsterdam. They must have a gourmet chef or something but it's a pocket bar that is as cozy as my apartment. Great DJ music and lots of cool parties. Try the anchovy cheese or the sipwich. Pros: a totally interesting menu with large portions and low prices, and a great drink menu too. Cons: a little too small, maybe they can expand someday? more

Wonderful Deal 5/27/2008

Regional's brunch is really great. I was there Saturday and had to ask the waitress to put more OJ in the mimosa because it was a little too strong. The food was wonderful. They have great choices to choose from. I tried something different, the Pandoratto which was like a french toast sandwhich. Delicious! Yes, it does get crowded because it is not so secret anymore and it is a great deal, so they take reservations, which is probably a great idea. Pros: Unlimited Mimos Refills Cons: Should make reservations more

great food and brunch, so-so service 5/23/2008

PRO: went out to SIP a couple of weeks ago for their new brunch, they have all-you-can-drink-mimosa-or-other now on offer with the brunch menu. The potato and egg-dish was great, and the french-press coffees are really good. Mimosa was not watered down at all, and for $25 each we walked out of there after a couple of hours nicely drunk. Athmosphere is great; they sometimes have a live DJ; def. crowded but always seating for 2 people should be no problem. The owner is really nice and friendly and he is there most night. CON: service could and should be much better!!! They take your orders quickly and food did not take too long, but the attitude is leave-me-be! with them and a frown on their face at all times....totally uncool. Otherwise a great bar to have a drink ! more

The Owner is nice, why cant he hire good staff? 3/14/2008

As a neighborhood regular, I used to happen into SIP whenever I wanted a relaxed atmosphere and a sophisticated drink. Around November of 2007, SIP changed its menu and adjusted some of its decor. The place still looks clean and nice, but is not more brightly lit and kind of kitchy-feeling removing the atmosphere that once drew me to the restaurant. Also displeasing is the wait staff that could not be bothered to get off their cell phones nor give any pleasantries. Pros: They have good cupcakes-take them to go! Cons: Waitstaff, the cramped tables, and the overpriced appitizers. more

Update! 11/16/2006

2008-so, 2yrs fast forward and SIP has upgraded! they have specialty tap beer now, giant cupcakes, gourmet food and best of all, more seating! The atmoshpere, once cool is now at it's coolest with lit glass bar shelves! At best, service is mediocre. Pros: good food, good selection of beverages, good atmosphere, good vibe Cons: average to slow service more
