Great food- higher prices than led to believe 2/26/2012

Had 2 specialty rolls, that were awesome, but $15 a pc. This edamame was $4.95 the miso was $3.50 per cup. So, as much as I enjoyed the rolls (edamame was blah), i was put off by the Prices. I have other favorite sushi places i thought were expensive but they included free miso with purchase of a roll. I will go to this plae when I am south, but, I live north, so won't go out of my way. thanks more

Yummy Sushi 3/16/2011

Shogun is one of the best sushi restaurants in Austin! The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. My husband and I were impressed with how nice they were to my two year old son. The food was fresh and tasted great. I highly recommend Shogun. more

Best Udon and tasty Sushi 2/4/2010

They have the best tasting Udon broth I've ever had. I have been going here for almost 10yrs and the food quality has always been great.\r \r They have a big selection of sushi and other cooked foods, their short ribs are pretty tasty too.\r \r This my first restaurant review and thought it was time since they have been so solid in the food quality and friendly service. Pros: Best Udon Soup in Austin more

Good food, something kinda scary though. 12/6/2009

I like the inside of this place, staff was nice, sushi made well. One complaint, which to me is a pretty big one. Waitress put our sushi on our table and walked away. We sat there for a minute till we realized we had ordered salmon and been brought tuna. We showed this to our waitress who was very nice about taking it away, what bothered us was she simply removed the tuna, placed some salmon on the plate, and put the tuna back in their supply to use again! Thankfully, we knew it was clean since we hadn't touched it or coughed on it, but how did the waitress know this?! We were polite, and finished eating, but we knew this was the first and last time we would go here. more

Excellent fresh sushi, late hours. 11/10/2009

Great little spot in S. Austin open till 10:00. Fresh sushi rolled by a rare female sushi chef. She is very nice, and everything is top quality. Pros: Great sushi, and sushi chef more

Great sushi in a ""tucked away location"" 5/24/2008

I live in Shady Hollow-- I have been going to this little place for years. I visit many sushi restaurants and this sushi here remains one of my favorite's. \r Generous servings with the sushi!\r \r Pros: Great sushi in south austin, super nice owner Cons: Doesnt have a whole lot of amience. more

Very good food. 4/12/2008

We tried out this restaurant for the first time tonight, and were highly impressed with the food. The sushi was fairly priced and very good while the entrees were slightly high priced, but also very good. We have lived right down the street from Shogun for 2 years now and have never stopped in before, but I can definitely say that we will be back many times in the future. Pros: Good Food, Easy Parking, No wait on Saturday Night more

Great Everything 4/7/2008

This is the best Sushi restaurant in Austin! The service is excellent, its family owned what more could you ask for? Me and my boyfriend are vegetarian so its hard finding a sushi restaurant that caters to us. They have a bunch of different things to chose from on the menu. From veggie tempura sushi rolls to the tofu entrees which are pretty descent size portions. They also have traditional floor seating which is nice. Simply that its awesome, and I would recommend it to vegetarians and meat eaters alike. Pros: really good food, parking, service, vegetarian options Cons: weird location in strip mall cant see from the road more

best In Austin 7/3/2007

Loved this palce when I lived in Austin, now sadly in Dallas but when in Austin I stop in. Started going here in 2004 and its even better now then it was before. Down home style of sushi, right to the point, based on freshness and in your face flavors. Service can be slow but always friendly and your always greeted when you walk in and always remembered when you go back which is huge. I was quoted in Austin magazine saying this is my favorite restaurant in Austin and it still is. Pros: freshness of food Cons: shopping center location more

Hands Down the Best Sushi in Austin 5/1/2007

Paul and Christina roll up some of the tastiest sushi I've ever had. My husband and I frequent Uchi also, and while both places have very tasty and fresh dishes, Uchi really skimps on the portions. Shoguns sushi servings are almost decadent in size. The only possible drawback is its stripmall location on Manchaca and Slaughter. Don't let this keep you away. You really get what you pay for, and the service is excellent. more

Good little sushi place 8/10/2006

We tried this place out three times, as it's practically right next to our house and Sushi is our favourite food. Third time is a charm. The first time was ok, the prices are high and I wasn't impressed with that. I would love a bit more selection in the sushi rolls. The service was ok. The second time we went the sushi was good, but the service was awful. I have to say the girl was new though, but we still waited a really really long time. It tends to be hot in this restaurant. They did have my favourite beer on tap however, which is now gone (dangit). The menu is very pricey. However, the sushi was really good this last time. In fact, some of the best I've had. The tuna was excellent, the salmon was great, and the tempura was light and very enjoyable. Overall we really enjoyed our last experience... until the check came. Over $50 for a couple of sushi rolls, a seaweed salad and a beer is outrageous. Great food, though. Lower the prices and you've got a real gem here. Pros: Great sushi, very nice and attentive staff Cons: PRICE more

Great little tucked away place in South Austin! 11/28/2005

The service was very attentive and they even have the low to the ground tables to sit at in back. They are more private. The sushi is wonderful, the spider roll was amazing!! Seaweed salad was typical and the green tea icecream was great! Pricing was mid-range and the food was well worth it! Pros: Spider Rolls, Quiet Setting more

wonderful food! 8/18/2005

The tempura is amazing - lightest and least greasy i've ever had. If you like tofu, the grilled tofu is heavenly..perfect texture and wonderful flavor...i think the sushi improves constantly and is a good price. Not the cheapest place in town, but the food and the staff are outstanding. Kudos to having a female sushi chef (who is also a great conversationalist) - recommend letting her select sushi for you at the bar. It does take a bit of 'looking' to find this place as it's off on the side of a shopping strip and the sign is small and obscured by trees - but WELL worth the effort!! Pros: Food, Staff Cons: Hard to Find more

Our neighborhood sushi bar 10/4/2002

Shogun has very good sushi, miso, tempura, noodle dishes, and terriyaki. This is a good place to come if you want to take your time and enjoy your food. The sushi takes a while, but they don't rush you either. For Austin, the prices are realtively low for quality sushi and Shogun hardly ever has a line to get a table. more

Not fancy, but very good 6/30/2002

Neither the food nor the place is fancy. But the food is very good. And the selection is fairly wide. One of the best sushi places in town. When I say the place is not fancy, I don't necessarily mean it in a negative way. Just that it's not fancy. It is quite clean and spacious. The tables could be a bit larger. Only negative is that it's waaayyyyy to far South :o( And yes, it's not cheap. Specially if you like Sushi. Pros: Great Sushi Cons: Too far (for me), Not Cheap more
