I've been to many sushi restaurants in many cities, but this is probably some of the best sushi I have ever had!!!

Try the Tofu Sukiyaki! 11/11/2008

I've been here three times. The vegetarian tofu sukiyaki is my favorite- it's one of the the most delicious dishes I've had in Philadelphia. Big thick-style mung noodles, veggies, tofu in a truly delicious hot broth. I've brought friends here for dinner before the Kimmel center, and always see at least two friends when I'm there. Attentive, knowledgeable staff - not pretentious. Warm, beautiful lighting. Cozy. My sushi-eating friends have always noted how good the place is, and if you don't like sushi, like me, there are wonderful other Japanese dishes!. You can count on this place for a good meal, warm atmosphere, good prices, with simple elegance. Pros: Delicious flavors, friendly and warm staff Cons: n/a more

Ignore the absurd dismissal that precedes this review 10/4/2008

Please try to minimize whatever credibility you lent to the previous review. Anyone who will publicly admit that their friendships are contingent upon a restaurant-recommendation is a pitiful product of modern cultural pretentiousness. This restaurant is NOT bad. I lived in Japan for 2 years and I've eaten lots of Sushi. I am not , therefore, an expert, but Shiroi Hana is a good value. It's unpretentious, has good service, and is worth a try. Unless you want to go out to eat with the previous reviewer, you'll probably enjoy your experience. Pros: good value, NOT bad Cons: Not exceptional more

Good sushi at a reasonable price 2/25/2008

What a deal! This place consistently has fantastic, fresh sushi at such a reasonable price. If you truly enjoy good sushi you should make this place a must visit. Their specialty rolls are unique and relatively well priced for Center City. Pros: Quality of sushi, freshness, ability to get in on any given night Cons: ambiance? who cares?? more

Best sushi 10/1/2007

I've been to most of the sushi restaurants around the city, and this is still my favorite. I haven't found any other place that compares in terms of freshness, style, and combinations. They never disappoint. I haven't tried any of their regular entrees, but their appetizers are very good - I highly recommend the scallops appetizer. Pros: Sushi! Cons: nothing! more

Best Sushi 9/15/2007

The food at Shiroi Hana was just great!!! Everything was so wonderful! The sushi is so fresh & fabulous. I just enjoyed every bite of it. The great atmosphere and extremely friendly service added to the outstanding experience. I'll definitely visit there again and highly recommend going there for an enjoyable evening. Pros: no wait, fast and reliable service more

Frozen fish, are you kidding? 9/6/2007

I ate here recently on a recommendation, and man was this place terrible. Suffice to say, the person who made the recommendation is no longer a friend. Pros: no waiting Cons: horrible fish for eating, great for making a rubber ball with. more

i'm not sure what standards everyone is using... 9/19/2006

but this place is nothing special. the sushi is no better than your average storefront: fish is generally rubbery, not the melt-in-your-mouth-variety that should earn top ratings. i know that philly is starved for decently priced, high-quality sushi joints, but you're WAY better off at the new Miraku on Spruce and 13th or Moshi Moshi on 18th. the service here is efficient and friendly, i'll give it that. Pros: attentive, friendly service; convenient location Cons: sub-par sushi more

Don't go here! Please! 8/23/2006

Please don't go here. The sushi here is better than Morimoto, Hikaru, Genji, Nara, Fuji Mountain, Aoi, and others. Yes, I love sushi and I don't want the likes of you or your boyfriend or girlfriend or family here because you will take away valuable seating space from me and the people I want to bring here, so please go to your inferior sushi place and eat the stuff you think is so awesome. Forget that what you get here is heaven on rice and there's something, a seafood item, on the menu here that is better than anything in its class anywhere in Philadelphia. But I won't tell you. You'll have to experiment and find it. Ha! You'll be eating and eating tons of great food until you get to it. Okay, I'll give you a hint. It's a crab. Now go away so I can enjoy the culinary delights here while you go on and on about your favorite sushi place! more

Best Sushi in Philadelphia. 7/15/2006

My friends and I are adore this sushi restaurant. We come here at least 4 times a month. The sushi is EXTREMELY fresh and delicious. Service is great and the the ambiance is great as well. Have tried many other sushi restaurants in the city but this one is by far the best! Must try if haven't already! Pros: Atmosphere, food quality, fast service Cons: N/A more

Excellent 9/20/2005

Best Sushi! House sushi specialties are fantastic! I went with a large group (approx 8 people) and we all had sushi/sashimi, no entrees. The food and atmosphere were great! Have two seperate dining rooms each with different ambiences. Both are very nice, one is more romantic than the other. I highly recommend this restaurant! If you're looking for great sushi at inexpensive prices, this is the restaurant! more

Teeny Tiny Sushi 9/12/2005

About 14 tables plus 8-person sushi bar. The Miso was luke-warm and could have been hotter and the scallions overpowered the flavor. Very little tofu. Sushi Deluxe ($21) was 10 pieces plus roll. The roll was Tuna not California, nice touch. The sushi pieces were extremely small and rice was less than adequate. The choices were OK, mackeral, tuna, unagi, shrimp, normal choices, nothing special. The fish itself was soft and I am not sure of its freshness. The wasabi was minimal and the ginger lacked any flavor. I would also give this a 4 on a scale of 1-10. I can only say that the meal was so un-fulfilling that I went down the street to another restaurant to have an entree after my sushi ""appetizer."" Pros: rolls Cons: sushi, miso more

Excellent, and my kids liked it too! 8/14/2005

Had a great meal with my 8 and 10 year old the other day, and the sushi chef I think appreciated that my kids enjoyed the tuna sashimi and the spanish mackerel sushi, but I am sure the fried shrimp ""sushi"" is good too kate! Pros: Kid friendly, great food, great service more

Sushi and beyond 5/30/2005

How fabulous. A truly Japanese restaurant that not only has great sushi but other dishes as well. Try the sampler bento box titled ume! Pros: Fab Service, Quite, Validated parking more

Best Japanese in Philly 3/11/2005

I've been going to this gem of a restaurant since I was fortunate enough to find it 5 years ago. Consistently excellent food (sushi and full kitchen menu) - everything I've ever had has been excellent - and very reasonably priced. Gracious and professional staff, and I've never had to wait for a table! The absolute BEST spicy shrimp tempura sushi roll in the city. Lovely selection of sake and beer, too. I love introducing folks who've had mediocre and/or overpriced Japanese/sushi experiences in Philly to this place... everyone leaves here content and happy. Oh, and please, for the love of all that is holy, this is a restaurant for adults. Leave your children at home, please. Pros: great food, lovely staff more

Real Sushi! 6/21/2004

I have had sushi all over the West Coast, and was so depressed in Philadelphia until I found SH. Forget every other place in Philly except Kisso and Morimoto. POD and Genji are a joke when you consider the value of what they serve. Shiroi is the real deal at a price you can live with. more

The Go-To-Guy of Sushi 4/20/2004

This joint is the Old Faithful of Japanese restaurants. Every time I have been there, the service has been impecable, only to be overshadowed by the food. No glitter, no glamour, just good sushi. Haven't eaten @ Morimoto's, but I have eaten @ Pod and I'd rather take a shotgun blast to the face then go back there. Pros: Food, Service, Price Cons: , Plain Atmosphere more

Dependable Sushi 4/5/2004

In a city with few decent Japanese restaurants, Shiroi Hana is a welcome find. In addition to the sushi, the appetizers are also quite good, esp. the agedofu and Kumamoto oysters, when they are in season. Service is efficent and friendly. Morimoto may have netter sushi, but Shiroi Hana is much more reasonably priced. Pros: Good sushi, Good value more

mmmmm 3/6/2004

i had a little trouble finding the place, maybe because i am from out of town or maybe because it's a busy street... so i called the restaurant and the person who answered was nice and led me in the right direction. i got there not long after and noticed how warm it was inside, like a sauna. that is my only complaint. the service and food made up for the heat. our waitress was friendly and efficient, coming by frequently to see if we needed anything. my boyfriend had sashimi and said it's one of the best he's had (and he's eaten an avid sushi lover). i had vegetable rolls and a beef appetizer wrapped around scallions. for dessert i tried the fried ice cream. it was different, in a good way. overall, excellent place to dine. Pros: parking garage, food, friendly service more

best sushi in philly! 11/6/2002

I truly recommend this restaurant as a Japanese. I think they have true Jpanese food, and sushi and sashimi are the best in philly. Service is ok. more
