If tan is your favorite color... 11/5/2007

then you might love the Ship Tavern. My friend and I heard the seafood and beef were excellent here, so we planned a lazy, late lunch and the only thing worth repeating was the company! My crab cakes' solitary attribute was *mushy* and my friend's slow roasted beef tasted like it was from a "cow who was having an off day". I was further astounded that a kitchen in such proximity to the Palace Arms was incapable of cooking a burger to medium-rare, leaving me with a medium-well lump of Kobe I didn't have the heart to finish. If you think the homemade bun will be worth the carbs, I think Wonder bread does a better job and skip the french fries because they weren't worth the room in the doggie bag (which really went to the dog). So if you want food that has any vibrancy, i.e. taste, the only thing I can recommend here is the horseradish; otherwise, get a comparable microwave dinner and save the hundred bucks! Pros: The ambience Cons: The food, drinks and wait staff more

Great Ambience, Awful Service 5/4/2006

If you are going to Ship's Tavern you can count on two things: 1. An absolutely gorgeous restaurant with amazing ambience; and 2. Almost the worst service imaginable Because it is in such a beautiful place my husband and I have tried to give this place numerous chances, however everytime they never cease to disappoint with their service. It does not matter if we are ordering drinks in the middle of the day, late at night, lunch or dinner. The service is ALWAYS slow to welcome you, get you your drinks, take your order, get you your food, check in on you and then give you your check. It is without fail that this happens. For this reason, we have stopped going. Hopefully, they will pull it together and realize that people that are spending $40 - $50 on lunch have higher expectations than bored service. Pros: gorgeous Cons: terrible service more

Overpriced but ok... 12/2/2005

My husband and I were at a convention and the concierge recommended this restaurant. We had a crabcake appetizer, a chicken sandwich that we shared, and bread pudding for dessert. It was all very expensive, but the atmosphere was really fun. The food was quite average, though. The crab cakes were good, but everything else was just run of the mill. And once you've had real New Orleans Bread Pudding, it's hard to find anything that compares. This was dry and tasted more like a cinnamon roll. Service was slow, but very friendly and we weren't in a hurry. It's in a hotel, so our expectations were low anyway. If you're in a large group, forget it -- it's much too cramped for enjoyment. I wouldn't tell people not to go, but it wouldn't be my first recommendation. Pros: atmosphere, friendly staff Cons: expensive, average food more

BEG TO DIFFER! 11/1/2005

I beg to differ with the other reviewers. Only drawback is that this place is TINY, so if you have a large group avoid, because they will have to push tables together to accommodate you, thereby blocking other patrons existing. Service was EXCELLENT (and this during the Noon rush!) Love the ambience of the Brown Palace! As it is TINY, I found it romantic/cozy, but as it is a TAVERN, it of course has the SPORTS TV over the bar, so avoid if you don't want your date staring at the TV. Other than that, I found it VERY GOOD and would DEFINITELY go back again!! more

Good Prime Rib 5/11/2005

Prime Rib was excellent. Not worth $27, but it was a special occasion. Service was a bit slow at times, though the server was gracious and helpful. Good ambience. Pros: Good Prime Rib, Good ambience Cons: Expensive more

Service is Horrible, Food is Good 2/19/2005

I have been to the Ship Tavern numerous times. Without fail, the service is slow, slow, slow. It is not unusual to have 2 - 3 waitstaff standing in the corner chit chatting while the guests wait for someone to arrive, deliver food or take / deliver drink orders. The food and drinks themselves are good - but for the price - the service is seriously lacking. I have taken out of town guests there before and was embarassed as I had to track down a waitress to bring us our drinks - this unfortunately is pretty par for the course here. more

christmas eve 2004 was a disaster for dinner. the service was terrible. manager made excuses, but, did not try to adjust or attend to the problems with his servers. one meal was forgotten and brought to the table after everyone was almost finished. just one example of many problems with our christmas dinner. Pros: ambiance Cons: , attitude, bad food more
