Nice Place 11/24/2010

It was really o.k.... no more. Good cocktails, mediocre service and nice people drinking their drinks... I don't know - If it was possible I would have given them three and a half stars.,, :) more

Favourite 9/6/2010

!!!!!!! Shebeen is an excellent choice for an intimate drink with a friend or date, or perfect for a mid size gathering. The wait staff is always very accomadating and they make the best martinis on the planet, seriously. The lychee, strawberryy balsmic and watermelon (when in season) are not to be missed. The best one is the godiva chocolate martini though! Drink prices are still pretty reasonable so a night out here will not leave your wallet empty. Shebeen is a very relaxed atmosphere yet still feels like a very hip and cool place to hang out without being snobby or pretentious more

Cozy Cocktails 3/4/2008

I'm part of a weekly Wednesday drinking group of 30 or so regulars who love to drink, geek out, talk and eat after work. We check out a different bar each week. We've been kicking around the city for 12 years. In that time we've visited several hundred bars (with repeats of faves). We visited Shebeen recently and were pleasantly surprised. It felt like we were hanging out in someone's living room. We sat by the window facing the sidewalk. We were on display for passersby, but we weren't concerned too much since we knew our Big Brother experience was fleeting. The cocktails were worthwhile, the service was good and the space felt cozy. The place is a good place to hang with friends who are out for a nice time to chat and play catch up. Pros: Cozy Atmosphere Cons: It May Become Trendy more

Service keeps me coming 2/22/2008

Love this bar. Very relaxed atmosphere and good tunes. Drinks are excellent. But one of the best reasons to go is the quality service. Extremely cute bartender who makes sure you are completely satisfied. I have to have a visit at least once a week. more

Great Intimate Atmosphere 1/11/2008

I first went there at the suggestion of one of my friends. I had a difficult time finding it because the front door was open and there was no name anywhere else (the name is on the front door only). Inside I found a warm, inviting atmosphere. The bartenders are very friendly and make very good drinks. I like strong drinks and the specialty martinis are not strong. But the unusual flavors are worth it. i would definitely recommend this bar to anyone. more

My Favorite Bar in NYC!! 1/8/2008

A friend of mine recommended this spot for its great music and chilled atmosphere. Being a whisky-only drinker, she forgot to mention they had the most incredible drink list. Between my friends and I, we tried almost every martini - WHITE CHOCOLATE COCONUT being my personal favorite! The bartenders were really friendly and super fast considering the workmanship each drink required. Although the bar was really crowded, our couches and large table gave us plenty of space to lounge. It's been really a long time since I've had such a great night out! more

Best martinis in NYC! 1/8/2008

i've had many wonderful nights at Shebeen, which is why i'm writing this review, to support them (i don't usually write reviews)! i choose to return regularly because it's a very warm and welcoming bar - a sort of home away from home for me and others in the neighbourhood (though i'm not from the area, i travel via subway at least 30 mins to get there!)... the owners' standards are very high and it shows!! the decor is stylish yet unpretentious, the drinks are delicious (try the lyche martini!), the service is attentive and quick, and there's always captivating music coming from the dj booth - there's really nothing negative i can say about this place... i wish more bars would learn from them! Pros: Martinis! Martinis! Martinis! Cons: None... more

Talk about bad customer service 12/28/2007

Wow, looking at all the reviews and from MY OWN EXPERIENCE, this place is notorious for bad service. Drinks were nothing special compared to any other decent bars in NYC. I should have read the reviews before going to this place with my friends. Not the friendliest bartendar (but was very friendly to some hot chic ordering drinks)....and HORRIBLE waitress (who claims to be the owner). This place was a little too empty for me and my friends to have fun. Pros: Can't think of any Cons: bad service and not so great ambience more

Unnecessary Rude Service 12/16/2007

I was also there this past weekend and I felt like I entered the someone's home as an unwelcome guest! Unnecessary rude service especially considering that the bar was empty outside of me and my 2 guy friends. Especially the bartender who I asked to recommend a drink promptly responded with "I can't help you if you don't know what you like." !!! I agree, the drinks might be good but it's not something you can't find anywhere else without the disgusting service. No drink is that good. Pros: Nothing Cons: Poor service, Rude help and Major attitude more

RUDEST SERVICE EVER 12/15/2007

To preface, this is the first time I've ever posted a review but I was so horrified by the service that I had to post something. I was there for an open bar party where each guest had pre-paid for 2 hours. I had 2 drinks at my table because my gf got me one but I was still finishing up my own drink when the OWNER of the bar came over and told us it was illegal (?!?!) for a customer to have 2 drinks at a time and promptly took my FULL second drink and dumped it. I guess she felt it was better to throw it away than for me to drink it. To boot, when I was walking out with my girlfriend (who was already irritaeted by the HORRIBLE service, she said "I'm never coming here" when the OWNER (short brunette wearing black hoodie) followed us out and shouted back "PLEASE DON'T" in the street. I would be forgiving if it was someone in the help staff (the tall bartender was also cold and rude by the way) but she owns the bar!!! She should get out of this business..... Pros: Martinis were actually good Cons: But not good enough to override the horrendous service more

Great Local Lounge! 12/2/2007

After dinner at Cafe Habana, stumbled into Shebeen by accident. Great martinis, honey gimlet is the best! We were there quite early but chill, non-yuppie crowd. Great place to lounge and catch up with friends after work, plus not jam packed and great music too! Pros: Martinis, not crowded, music more

Favorite Bar in Manhattan! Best kept secret and friendly South African staff 10/1/2007

Shebeen is a very relaxed atmosphere yet still feels like a very hip and cool place to hang out without being snobby or pretentious. A bonus is that its a great place for a private party, either during the week or on a Saturday night (if you rent it out early enough before it gets too crowded). You can have food brought in and the staff will go out of their way to help you plan and organize. Shebeen never gets so loud that you can not hear yourself speak or your company, which is rare in a bar in NYC these days. I highly highly recommend a visit to this wonderful little SoHo spot. You will not be disappointed. Pros: Friendly staff, Amazing martinis, Available for private parties, Not too loud or crowded , Comfy couches more

Best martinis in town! 11/15/2006

Stumpled across this place after dinner one night. We were impressed by the selection of martinis, it was hard not to try everyone of them that first night. Personal faves are the Strawberry Shortcake and the Bloodymary Martini. We have been back a few times and whether we are on the couches or at the bar we have always enjoyed the atmosphere as well as the music from the live dj. Pros: Great drinks, Atmosphere, Cons: No food more

consistency personified... 11/15/2006

while all other restaurants, & bars in NOLITA, The Lower East Side, & East Village have become tired, and cliche, Shebeen remains a safe haven for those would like to hold a conversation, and enjoy a fine drink in a cool/tranquil, yet interesting environment. the back lounge, and the martini list, and staff simply cannot be beat. i have personally hosted a half dozen parties at this establishment... everytime i do, i get bombarded with phone calls of people who attended, and now want the contact # to arrange their own party. i would never think to post reviews, but have been shocked by some of what i have read below. there is not a warmer tone to a bar in town! Pros: back lounge, & generous pours more

can't miss spot 11/14/2006

i have been going to sheebeen for about a year now. consider it my spot. lower key than the rest of soho, chill vibe, my kind of beats. perfect place to take high-end clients for drink. i like to get there very early or very late. the dj's are amazing and well known in the circles that know. the high-end, tastie martinis take a minute, but are well worth the wait. if you are trying to find this spot, don't look for any signs. see you there. Pros: location, atmosphere, dj, matrinis Cons: no food more

JUST OK 11/13/2006

I think I was there on the SAME night as Tess! I was compelled to write - That's so funny how you described the aloof bartender and his too-cool little assistant. I totally agree. Would it hurt them to actually smile a little? Geez. I actually liked the space - but would have enjoyed it more if it were less crowded. But then I guess I would be forced to stare at the aloof (borderline rude) bartender all night. I did like the lychee martini though. I read through some of the reviews and the great ones are exxagerated and must be written from friends of the bar bc the place is OK but not 'amazing'. No staff that 'busted their butts' all night and our host was not 'bombarded with phone calls' of people to find out more about the place. overall - just ok... Pros: nice space, could be cozy if less people, lychee martini Cons: staff not so fun, small, more

What a find!!! 11/7/2006

Just had a big (130 people) party there the other night and we had a blast!!! The drinks were amazing, the DJ and music were incredible and the staff worked their butts off for us all night. Make sure you try every one of their freshly-made flavored martinitis. I don't know who came up with those combinations, but they could be the best in the city. My favorite was the lychee, though the cucumber sake was a close second--I think I had a few too many of both!!! The drinks definitely make this place unique, but even without them, I'd go back any time (already booked my holiday party there!) It's easy to miss from the street, but inside, it's rockin!! more

Good spot to start the evening, not end it 11/5/2006

Had a party here the other night, and although it was definitely a cool little space, it's way too small to withstand a large party for a number of hours. Also, the staff (bartender and his too-cool little assistant) were strangely aloof. Not the warmest or friendliest people, but at least the drinks were solid. Overall, a good choice to begin a night out... Pros: Nice space, good music Cons: Aloof staff, too packed late night (weekend) more

Best Bloody Mary Martini, great vibe 9/28/2006

This candle-lit lounge has the best specialty martinis i've tasted anywhere. The menu is seasonal and they only use the freshest ingredients - no ready-prepared mixers here. The spicy bloody mary martini, made with their own jalapeno-infused vodka, is insane! Pros: music, ambience, service more

  • The Scene
Inspired by the old-fashioned speakeasies of South Africa, this welcoming locale is sparsely decorated and dark--it's dimly lit by a single wall of fluorescent lights and an assortment of candles on tiny tables sprinkled about the bar. In warmer months, the ceiling fans' ineffectiveness can make it mighty hot.

    The Draw
An unusual assortment of African tribal music and hip-hop blares loud and proud from the speakers as the barely legal crowd taps its feet to the beat. Bartenders prepare the drinks fresh, even crushing the raspberries right before your very eyes for a raspberry-mint martini--a heavenly mix of muddled mint and raspberry vodka with a splash of raspberry tea and a dash of lime. The drinks are costly, but well worth the expense.
