I come here with the girlies tuesday nights. Not only is it our favorite sushi place to go to but how amazingly fresh it is and how clean the place is. Their drinks are a big bonus too. Everyone should come here on tuesday nights more

Shang not worth the price and underwhelmed 6/19/2010

We went to Shang because we saw Susur Lee on Top Chef Masters and was quite impressed by the scores he was getting. We were not very impressed by the decor when we walked in\r \r We ordered the Singapore slaw and hot and sour soup as appetizers. The Singapore slaw was quite good with a lot of complex flavors and was mixed tableside. The hot and sour was extremely sour...and for one bowl (rice bowl size) it was $10 which officially makes it the most expensive hot and sour soup I've ever ordered. It totally wasn't worth it and i've had better from take out places. It was also extremely salty. The two dishes we got were the ""Top Chef chicken curry"" and scallop and shrimp dish. The Chicken curry was good but i felt like it was missing something...and sitting on top of the polenta made the texture a bit strange. The chicken was tender, however. the shrimp and scallop was pretty good. but again at $29 you can get a bigger and better tasting dishes in Chinatown. \r \r The dessert was devil food cake with ice cream. the devil food cake was a bit dry. There were that many selections for dessert\r \r Service was very good, they refilled our water quite often and were courteous. However, given the price, tastiness of the dishes, and size of the portions (by the way a bowl of jasmine rice runs $4 - no one eats Chinese food without rice!) it's simply wasn't worth it and it didn't live up to my expectations. Pros: good chinese food Cons: not even close to being worth it; chinatown has better food more

Amazing Food and Tasty Low Cal Cocktails 2/18/2010

I love Thompson hotels and have been dying to check out the Shang restaurant at the Thompson LES. There are so many restuarant choices in downtown nyc, but the combination of quality food, ambience and cocktails is hard to find. I had dinner with a few a friends from out of town last night and was blown away. Shang was filled with beautiful people, the food was amazing and we sipped on low cal (always a plus) yin yin cocktails made with TY KU. Simply delicous- definitely coming back! Pros: Great LES spot, Delicious cocktails more

yin yin! 11/24/2009

I've heard great things about Thompson hotel in the past so I was expecting great things when i made dinner reservations at Shang for this past Saturday. Shang was amazing and the location was perfect. I wanted a real ""New York"" experience and this area of town is exactly that. My girlfriend and i enjoyed these low cal yin yin cocktails as we people watched all night long! Pros: great new york place, delicious drinks more

My friends and I also shared an assortment of rolls and they were delectable!! I cannot wait to come back to Shang!!! more

Shang - Avoid 7th floor bar 8/2/2009

I went here last night for drinks for a birthday. It was early in the night, it was three girls. The guy in the lobby by the velvet rope (what a joke) was giving us a hard time about letting us in for a drink. Then you take the elevator up to the 7th floor where you get more attitude from another guy in front of velvet rope who acts like he's doing you a favor by letting you in. We had a few more girls join us later and then two guys. The girls got in with attitude from staff, and when the guys came we went to get them and the doorman said 'i already let in so many guys to your party already', when my friend said no you didn't i swear, he called her a liar. Then another wait staff guy came to our table to smooth things over and said b/c the waitress asked me nicely, I'll let you guys stay. My friend said to him, it's not a privelege for us to stay here and he stomped off in a tif. We had ordered several rounds, but asked for our check, left no tip, and went into the elevator. The waitress came out after us asking to talk to us for a minute. I said no we're done and will be leaving. They were so disrespectful to the bday girl and to all out friends that came up. There was never a line in the lobby to get in and the place was empty, so i don't why there was sooo much attitude from the staff there. On the way out other people were complaining about the service too. Go back to Customer Service 101. You should be kissing our behinds, not the other way around. Go somewhere else for a good time. When we asked them if our friends will be able to come up later, the staff said depends what they look like and what time it is. We left at 11:30 -12am and it was dead and we looked good. Stay away from this place. I've been going out in Manhattan for years, all the hot spots and have never been treated like this. I'd give it zero stars if I could. Cons: rude staff, attitude more

Alittle out dated 3/12/2009

Went there to have a taste of the ""best"" chef from Canada, and I must say although the food was good, Asian fusion is definately out dated! I felt like it was 1997 at Asia De Cuba. The decor was nice, the light set a good mood and the clientele was mostly those you might find at Ciprianis or so. Nothing major to rave about, the place is bacially ""been there done that."" They are missing something that would make it a ""wow"" factor. The other negative is the Orchard st entrance, dont get drunk cause you're liable to take a nice tumble down 2 flights. They should make all patrons use the main hotel lobby entrance and use the elevator. The place needs a shot in the arm by something or someone with a major flair. Pros: Service Cons: Stairs from Orchard st. Entrance more

Words Really cannot describe.... 2/18/2009

We went to Shang's on 2/7/09, a Saturday evening (first reservation). I had no idea what to expect but we were both impressed from the minute we walked through the door. Everyone was great from the host to the woman that checked our coats. We had the best seat in the house and one of the best servers, Christine. She was AMAZING and extremely informed!!! For drinks we had the Yen Yen and Shang Caipirina both were unusual but delicious. The food was impeccable! The chef really knows how to mix his flavors. Every single bite was enjoyable and worth savoring. Must try: lobster bisque, oxtail soup, beef cheek, lamb chops and the singapore salad, AWESOME!!! Truly Shang is a restaurant that must be experienced...words really do it no justice. As for price, I felt it was reasonable for what you are getting: creative, delicious, quality food with great service and superb ambiance! BTW, The chef did come out and speak to us which was the icing on the cake. GO TO SHANG! Pros: Great food and service more

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1/28/2009

This place was AWESOME!!!!!!!! I went for the first time last night. You don't know what to expect when you ascend the long staircase on Orchard street in the East Village. I was honestly thinking that this was going to be another ""typical"" Hotel restaurant. Dim lighting and soothing music greet you when you reach the landing. From the moment we arrived everyone was very attentive and acommodating. My sister and I arrived 1/2 hour early for our 7pm dinner reservation. Our coats were immediately whisked away and checked for us, and we were escorted to the bar to await the rest of our party of four. The cocktails were a little pricy - $15, but worth every penny. I particularly loved the Yen-Yen ( a crisp cucumber vodka blend with a hint of citrus). When the remainder of our party arrived we were promptly escorted to our table. Our waiter was very knowledgeable regarding the Menu and made some excellent recommendations. The Chef himself came out to greet us and inform us of the nights specials. This place is essentially family style, but you can choose to order a - la carte. For dinner we particularly loved the Lobster Curry Bisque Soup, Chickpea Fritters, Braised Beef Cheeks (I know . .sounds daunting but absolutely delish and very tender) and Scallops with Chorizo (had great blend of flavors and a nice spicy kick). For dessert, hands down the Banana Chocolate cake was to die for - think warm banana bread with a touch of chocolate smothered in a caramelized sauce. Mmmmmm. Ok . . .so you'll definitely leave this place feeling as though you've put on a few pounds . . . but hey you should already belong to a gym ;-) I'll definitely be going back. The food was very reasonably priced for the value. NEGATIVE for some: tables are very close together in the dining room; not a problem for me but some people are very picky about such things. My sister and I are already looking into reserving the outdoor space off the bar for a party this Spring/Summer. Pros: Ambiance, Service, Food, Cocktails Cons: Difficult Parking, Tables Close Together more
