Try this for a change 5/31/2006

If you are looking for something other than your "pancakes, hash browns, and eggs" brunch, come on over here. This little eatery is inside of a mini mart, but they serve up an awesome brunch. You get a plate with a good assortment of spicy and sweet foods to try for brunch. Their food is delicious, plentiful, and really really cheap. Make sure to try their orange-y looking dessert (halwa) that is really sweet and filling. Wether you go for brunch, lunch, or dinner, you will enjoy the experience here. more

One of the best 5/5/2006

I have yet to have a bad experience at Shan. The restaurant is in the back of a minimart on an otherwise-quiet street up north. Cabs fill the small parking lot, so you'll probably have to find street parking if you drive. Shan offers cheap, fast, delicious, fresh foods well into the night. Flatbreads are cooked to order, and flashy Pakistani music videos will tide you over for the short wait while your food is cooked. Although the atmosphere is specifically that of a minimart, I've enjoyed the meals I've eaten there more than those I've gotten takeout. I don't know enough about Pakistani food to know if this is true, but I've been told it's quite authentic. All I know is it's very, very tasty. Worth the trip if you don't live in the neighborhood. Overall, highly recommended. Five stars for food quality, five stars for atmosphere. more

Shan 5/5/2006

This place isn't for everybody, but boy, it sure is for me. Shan is a Pakistani restaurant tucked away in the back of a convenience store tucked away in the back of a strip mall out past the end of Lake Shore Drive (up in the wilds of the north side, where seldom few venture.) The place is full of men, apparently cab drivers, since the parking lot is always full of taxis, eating spicy food, watching Bollywood movies, and, up until the smoking ban, smoking heavily. The service is great-- fast, friendly, and possibly slightly amused that we're there to begin with. The atmosphere is... well, it's a convenience store, what do you expect? Harsh lighting, formica tables, and musical soap operas in languages you don't understand. The food is plentiful and well-prepared, it ranges from spicy to very spicy, and it's cheap. I've left Shan uncomfortably full of delicious food, and my share of the bill, after tax and tip, was $5. more

Breakfast 3/11/2006

This place has really good food. This is the best place in Chicago to get a good Pakistani Indian breakfast. They have something called Halwa Poori, which is sweet and very very delicious. This place is open all night long so you can go in at any time. They have a lot of cab drivers here who come here all day and all night long. So it is always full of people. This is not really a family type restaurant. Just a place to go have some halwa poori. more

This an authentic Pakistani fast food restaurant. Usually a local cabbie stop, this budget friendly restaurant is great! Although the atmosphere is not the best, the food here is delicious. Take out is reccommended. They have the best breakfast- seera, puri and chana. It is a very interesting combination of sweet and spicy, and greeeeasy. more
