Editorial review from Citysearch 6/5/2013

For anyone who complains that this sushi is too ""Americanized""...no it isn't. It's delicious! This very clean restaurant is nicely decorated and it is ""Fusion Food"" at its best. If you want authentic, go to the Great Wall Buffet (kidding). But if you like fusion, definitely try sekai. more

Best sushi in the Valley 9/1/2011

My wife and I LOVE Sekai Sushi. My parents lived in the Mesa/Gilbert area for 24 years and introduced us to it shortly after we were married. My wife didn't care for sushi and was not very excited about going (She has been to a few sushi joints in the Valley and didn't like any of them). I lived in the Philippines for a few years and had become accustomed to super fresh and delicious Japanese food and have been quite disappointed with sushi restaurants around town, so I was hesitant as well. My parents eventually won out and we went to Sekai. We were immediately hooked. The wait staff is friendly (although slow during busy dinner hours), the tables clean, and the food is INCREDIBLE. The sushi is fantastic and the seafood (while not as fresh as living next to the ocean) is better than I expected. My wife and I have gone back many times - we just can't get enough. more

Horrible - last time I use Citysearch to find a new place 3/24/2011

My husband and I were feeling like trying a new sushi restaurant tonight (a Thursday) as we typically frequent Ra (love their sushi and HH) or Hon Machi (really good sushi too). I searched for best sushi Phoenix, and Sekai came up as best for Citysearch. After seeing all the great reviews, we drove out from Chandler. When we got our food, it was not good at all. The fish was warm, I think it was because the sushi rice was hot when the put the fish on it. It also didn't taste nigiri very fresh. As for the rolls, the eel sauce was way too sweet and very runny. The avocado was brown and mushy, and there was way too much rice (again, not very good sushi rice) on each roll. I couldn't eat more than a few pieces, it was awful. To top it off, the waitstaff wasn't great. We both finished our waters, and it wasn't until the bill was brought to us (after sitting for awhile not touching the bad food) that someone realized we were out of water. In sum, I have NO idea how this place got to be rated so high. Yes, they are big, as they are full of bad rice, but they taste awful. My guess - the waitstaff voted on their own restaurant. more

Best Sushi I have ever had! 1/28/2011

This place is delicious! It trumps places like Kona Grill and Ra which are overpriced and not authentic. The rolls here are fantastic and huge! We ordered like 5 different rolls and it came to our table in like 10 minutes tops. They also serve complimentary miso soup which I love. This place is pretty cheap too, our bill was only $50 for 5 rolls, 2 drinks and 2 quail eggs. The service was great and the waiters were really friendly. I seriously wish I could eat here everyday lol. I recommend the volcano roll, the yumi yumi roll and the vegas roll. more

Sekai Sushi 4/8/2010

I've had sushi a few times. Was never really impressed. Have someone in town who wanted sushi and ""RA"" was packed. A friend recommended Sekai and ""RA"" is no longer on anyone's list! Traditional rolls as well as the December 29th roll were superb! Sekai is wonderful! The staff is so very pleasant and kind! Will be going back over and over! Pros: Fresh, Flavorful, Comfy/Quiet, Staff A#1 Cons: None-had an amazing experience more

Best sushi I know of in the East Valley. 1/28/2008

We moved here from CA about 6 months ago and have tried a dozen different sushi places, including the new RA in Gilbert. Sekai Sushi is hands down the best place we have tried. We have been there a dozen times already because we don't want to go some other place and be let down... if you like spicy stuff and the chef on duty knows how to make it, I highly recommend the ""Hot Lava Roll."" YUM! Pros: Awesome sushi, friendly chefs Cons: Service can be slow at times more

My Favorite - Love It! 10/25/2007

Coming from both coasts (California and New York), I?ve experienced all sushi imaginable! Since moving to Arizona, we've tried many sushi places and Sekai was recommended by a waitress at a Korean restaurant. Sekai's sushi is FRESH, DELICIOUS and HIGH QUALITY! People go there for the sushi and not for a romantic evening. The owner ""Moon"" is very friendly. I've gotten to know her well because we go there at least 1x a week. I love Mirugai (giant clam). Aji and monk fish liver . It's not on the menu but the owner always orders it for us as long as she knows we will be there. The salmon and white tuna to die for! As well as uni! Heck, I love'm all! Pros: very friendly, accommodating more

Not the place to go for weekend dinner 4/7/2007

I've visited Sekai several times. The Sushi is very good. The ambiance leaves ALOT to be desired. Service is VERY slow. We went this evening for dinner (Saturday night) and granted it was a typical East Valley restaurant in a Saturday night - packed. Another couple had to leave because a large insect found its way onto the wall next to their table. Someone in my party had a dirty glass - we found old dishwashing detergent stuck to the bottom of the soda glass. They only brought half of our parties food at a time - about 20 minutes between serving my wife and I, and then my brother in law and sister. No apologies from the staff. Then again, they have never been very conversational or pleasant to deal with. Trust me - if you go here more than once, it's cause the sushi is very good. This should be the ONLY reason for you to go. RA, Kona Grill, Ah-So, all give you better overall service for your buck. Pros: Great Sushi Cons: Poor Service, Poor Ambience, Dirty more

Great sushi, fast service most nights, very fresh & well priced! 2/18/2007

This is the best place for sushi we have found in our East valley area - better than Kona and better than Ra in both freshness and cost. We don't dine here for atmosphere, but for great sushi! Pros: Fresh & Fair Priced Cons: Lacking in atmosphere more

Excellent sushi/sashimi 11/2/2006

Sushi and sashimi are excellent. Try the squid salad. The 9-1-1 is very, very good (sushi but with cucumber instead of rice). more

Great Sushi, Great Prices You gotta get the BOAT! 6/14/2006

I love this place, you get miso and a salad to start! We love the sushi boat. I always add some sashimi which is as fresh you can get! Gets busy weekend nights! Bathrooms are pretty small and could use some new decor but the food is awesome! If you sit outside (weather permitting) you may have to remind them you are there! Its AZ don't eat outside, especially sushi! Pros: My kids are treated well here! Cons: I don't like the cramped bathroom more

Very good Sushi 6/10/2002

The nigri (salmon, tuna, red snapper, yellowtail) was all very good. It costs around $3 for two fairly large peices. The california maki was ok but not great. The tempura and tempura roll and was pretty good too. Overall, I recommend this place, especially if you are picky about your nigri and sashimi. Pros: not crowded, good parking more
