The real deal 2/22/2010

If you want to eat sushi in an authentic sushi restaurant, this is the place. Don't come here if you are looking for the Miyako/Cafe Japon americanized sushi (read: the exploding cajun cowboy crazy dragon roll covered in mayonnaise). This is fresh sushi done right by a (gasp) Japanese sushi chef. I love the chirashi with a couple of pieces of hotate on the side. As the chef gets to know you he will begin to customize for you when you come in - a mark of a true sushi chef. The rice is sticky with that slightest hint of sweet. This is the Japanese restaurant where you will find the most Japanese people eating, whether local residents or traveling visitors. My favorite, by far. Pros: Authentic people, authentic atmosphere, authentic food more

Great, authentic food 10/11/2009

Great food! It's been in the same location for over twenty years; we've been going the whole time! I used to live in Japan and love to go here. I recommend the Japanese menu actually, though, if you are adventurous and like authentic food. It is written in Japanese calligraphy and changes daily. It is not inexpensive but the food is really good. more

Beware of MSG 7/24/2009

We ate here for dinner one evening and the food was excellent, but the next day we both woke up with a major headache and that could only mean one thing... MSG Pros: Good Food Cons: Use MSG more

Have been going for years, will continue for years 5/11/2008

This is just an amazing restaurant. The hot food is wonderful, the sushi is the best in town. They always fawn all over our kids, and give them special treatment, bringing them little dishes and little tiny forks and spoons. You never feel like they resent your kids being there, even if the child is having a moment. Its a great family restaurant without being fast-food or a chain. Now that they are non-smoking, it is a extra nice meal. Pros: food, sushi chef, servers, choices, authentic food, quiet, elbow room Cons: parking is limited in front, if the sushi chef isnt there (rare), the quality may not be as expected more

Japanisimo!!! 1/31/2008

If you have not been to Japan and tasted what original Japanese food actually taste like, you will not understand this place...go to Blue Fish House, The Fish, Uptown Sushi or Azuma instead for good American style Japanese food that you will greatly enjoy. Sasaki is the closest thing you will come to eating in a trditional neighbourhood Japanese restaurant where you will get absolutely nothing but the freshest, best cut, high quality ingredients. It is a blessing to have places like this in Houston. more

Best Japanese hot dishes in town 4/9/2007

Great curry udon that not many Japanese restaurants have it. A must try. Pros: Best Japanese hot dishes in town Cons: A little bit pricy more

If you are Japanese, you will like it. 11/6/2006

Yes...if you are Japanese, you will like it. Great Nimono, Yakko, Ramen (a must!).If you are not, and are looking for ""strange"" sushi/sushi-roll, this is not...As a Japanese, this is THE place in Houston. Pros: Authentic Japanese food. more

As close to Real as you'll get in Houston 4/13/2006

Ask me.. I lived in Japan for years. If you want glitz and attitude go elsewhere but if you know your Sushi you'll know the quality at Sasaki is consistently fresh. The service is stretched at times but this is a place for relaxed conversation. So relax and everything will get to you in a reasonable time frame. We're not talking fast food, huge quantities teaxs style sushi. This one is for the purists. Pros: Quality sashimi, Cold beer, friendly staff Cons: Dated decor more

Worst Japanaese restaurant 5/11/2004

My wife and I went there for dinner because we love Japanese food and like to try different places. I ordered a combination sashimi to start with. When the server brought it out, I was in awe because I never seen such poor quality and selection in any Japanese restaurant I had been in before. The sashimi was warm and the selection of fish was ridiculous for the price that they were charging. I was so disgusted that I just paid the bill and left without finishing half of it and went to Cafe Japon down the street. more

1 For 2 2/20/2004

One of the best quality Japanese restaurants in town. Great sushi chef. However, sushi portion is 1 for 2, NOT 2 for 1. Extremely low dollar value for the price, even though their price is not the highest. more

Quality is important! 1/18/2004

I've been to quite a few sushi restaurants, and there a some that I personally enjoy. However, my all -time favorite would be Sasaki. I've been going there for about 2 years now, and I have to admit that the food is quite pricey there, but the quality is by far the best. The sushis are really fresh. If you love the traditional hot -pot table cooking, then you should try the seafood hot pot. This meal is good enough to feed 2-3 people, and is really, really good when the weather is cold. Pros: fresh seafood, Authentic food, intimate setting Cons: small restaurant, parking more

all about the food 8/14/2003

If you're looking for authentic Japanese food, Sasaki is the place to go. The sushi chef is Japanese and you can tell the difference when you eat Sasaki sushi and some other place Americanized like Miyako, Taiko, or Cafe Japon. Sushi is about quality and not quantity. Japanese businessmen frequent this place which is a strong indication that this is truly the only place in Houston that serves authentic Japanese food. Ask the sushi chef the specials for the day and let him get to work. I do warn you: don't come here for a bargain. You pay for what you get. Pros: authentic food, Japanese sushi chef Cons: alot of smokers, relatively small, limited parking more

Without a doubt, THE BEST 5/7/2003

If you need glitz and glamor, go some where else. But this is down home, truely ethnic japanese food. The fish is always the best. The staff is so nice and friendly and get to know you and the same people work there, even over years. They only have 1 sushi chef, he is THE guy. And he is great at what he does. They will go out of their way to make special accomidations, remember your prefrences or do special orders. If they make an error, they bend over backwards to make it up to you. This is not an american resturant, its a japanese resturant that just happens to be plopped in the middle of Houston. Pros: Great Food, Wonderful Staff, Consistant Cons: Small NonSmoking Area, Not flashy more

Good, but Overrated 8/10/2002

My wife and I are regulars at the Taiko and we decided to try Sasaki because of the high reviews. We were disappointed in comparison with the ambiance, menu, food and presentation. The place comes across as a local neighborhood joint and felt a little dark and grungy, which doesn't give me confidence in a shusi bar. The menu was uninspiring with few inventive offerings like you see at Taiko. We did try one of the special rolls they offer (the menu doesn't describe what's in it) and it was more like a kitchen-sink roll, with a little bit of everything (incl. egg), rather than a careful selection of complementary ingredients as at Taiko. The beer glasses are small and cloudy, the serving trays look old and worn, etc. Some people might think all that is cozy, but I don't. more
