Yes, the service was a bit slow, but the quality of the food was excellent and the owner(s) who was working at the time seemed genuinely concerned with creating top quality food. We bought some desserts on the way out and enjoyed them greatly with dinner later that day. I don't understand why reviewers have to get so emotional and carried away with themselves. If you had a bad experience, bring it to the attention of the management and go on with your life. Sheesh. more

Dirty and bad experience! 7/31/2009

The restaurant is FILTHY with flies everywhere and the service was very poor (soup took 40 minutes to bring out and came out w/meal; not before and we had to flag down the server to bring us utensils and other items). The food was ok, but it was not worth being subjected to the filth and flies. Also, several people's cars were "booted" (fortunately not towed) even though they were parked right behind the restaurant and there was no clear sign to not park there. So even if you want to take a chance and eat there, DO NOT PARK in that lot behind the restaurant (restaurant should tell its patrons this on its website). All in all, this substandard meal cost me $145. Real shame because we could use a good vegetarian restaurant nearby. I'll never go back. more

They're fine with food, but not with people. 5/29/2009

For a cafe that prides itself on organic and vegetarian cuisine-both of which are meant to be wholesome and good for their customers-Sarah and Desmond, and their employees, show a remarkable lack of concern for the people they profess to serve. The service is excruciatingly slow and often careless; although I agree with a previous reviewer that it's nice to sit in a cafe and watch people pass on Main Street, it's also nice to be able to eat at a place if I happen to be in a hurry. I frequently saw employees forgetting to ring up orders after they were made, leaving customers hanging at the register. In addition, the owners were unfriendly and made it clear that they were in the business of making money, not of treating people with basic decency. more

Thoroughly unimpressed 12/27/2008

While the food was passable, my gripe is more about the service, or lack thereof. For starters, when the girl brought us our coffee, she neglected to bring or mention anything about creamers, sugar, etc. Then when the food came out, silverware was provided to my boyfriend, who had a salad, but not even so much as a napkin was provided to me (I had a sandwich, but at least a napkin would have been nice.) Finally I decided to go up and ask, and also ask about coffee fixins. The girl at the counter informed me that everything (including napkins) were kept up front. As Ellicott City is primarily a tourist destination, and it was very clear that we had never been there before, it would have been nice if this had been mentioned to us earlier. Lastly, I thought everything was very overpriced, and neither of us were too impressed with the food, either. Basically, this place is a waste of time. Find another restaurant with some vegetarian choices. more

Vegetarian Sandwiches and Great Coffee 6/23/2006

On a recent hot weekend day in historic Ellicott City my wife and I stopped at Sarah and Desmond's to get an Iced Coffee to cool down. We also discovered a menu full of vegetarian options so we had lunch there too. The coffee was delicious and so were the sandwiches. This Cafe looks tiny when you first walk in because it is in one of the historic buildings downtown but there are 2 additional floors of seating. The prices were very reasonable and the sandwiches came in good size portions. We also bought a loaf of fresh baked bread on the way out. It sure beats the mass produced stuff you get at the big grocery stores. This is a breakfast and lunch only place, they close at 6pm daily so don't expect to get dinner or a late night bite to eat here. more

Easy vegetarian cuisine 8/2/2005

This is an unpretentious coffee shop serving locally roasted key coffee. The menu is small and simple and serves up the cafe type sandwiches and salads. There is also an array of pastries, cakes, and breads. The best part about Sarah and Desmond's is that on the third floor there is an entire section dedicated for a toddler play area. So mom's who are looking for a place to go where their kids won't get into trouble this is a great choice. There's not much space so don't go planning to get together with your kids daycare class, but if you're looking to grab a cup of coffee with another mom friend, this is the perfect place. more
