I have read some negative reviews of this retaurant here on citysearch and was a little surprised. My girlfriend and I just tried this place last Sunday evening, after having lived in the area for over 2 years. I didn't know what region the food was from, but it seemed Italian/mediterranean. We both enjoyed the food quite a bit. My girlfriend's dish was a seafood pasta. I tasted the mussels, and enjoyed them. I am not much of a ""seafood pasta"" kind of guy though. I got the fried trout special, on a bed of couscous and spinach. I thought it was outstanding really. Totally bone free, firm (but able to break it apart with my fork) and with a mildly tart flavor courtesy of capers and a kind of mustard-wine sauce. It was the best kind of ""full"" feeling, not the kind you get from eating heavy meats, breads or cheeses. The waitress suggested some good white wine. I thought the waitress here was quite nice. She checked on us, and got us what we needed without being intrusive. She certainly wasn't rude. By the end of the meal, my girlfriend and I were feeling so buzzy and indulgent, we got desserts, and those were good too. Most of my other reviews (many of the negative ones especially) have been based upon multiple visits. Hopefully, if I return to Puran's the quality will remain high. I was just surprised to have had such a good experience and then see negative feedback from other diners. This is definately not a cheap eats place. Our bill was right around $100. So I won't make it a weekly occasion. But if someone's in town, it seems like a good place to take them. Los Feliz can attract a lot of uppity scenesters, so maybe it helps that I went on a Sunday early evening. Who knows?
Pros: Nice trout. Good bread dip. Not crowded when I went.
Cons: One of the shockingly few occasions when I had no complaints.
