Old Favorite Fading Fast 10/15/2011

What once was my favorite and an old standby for a guaranteed good meal has been going down hill in the last year. While I can deal with and understand why portions are getting smaller, the quality is also going down. My favorite dish the spicy shrimp linguine was a real let down last night. The shrimp were either over cooked or cooked when frozen which made them watery, rubbery and inedible. To top it off the linguine had almost no sauce. It was bland and was completely different from many years of eating this dish. They should drop the description of ""spicy"" if this is a new sauce. My husband ordered the chicken parmesan which was billed as one of the nightly ""specials."" The chicken parmesan was good, and also a smaller portion, however we were shocked when the bill came and this chicken special was $23. Really? $23 for chicken? On special? Looks like we are unfortuneately taking a break from Puran because its a trend we've been noticing and the last visit may have been the tipping point. more

IT ROCKED! 3/22/2011

I stumbled upon Puran's on accident one night. I was in Los Feliz with a friend to pick-up some music from another friend and there was a ton of traffic and we were starving so we pulled over at the first place we saw which was Puran's. I was blown away how good the food was! \r \r It was a really cold day, and the server suggested this pomegrante & lentil soup that was a special and it rocked! I also ordered the organic herb dover sole upon her suggestion that was grilled w/ warm cous cous, and I felt like I inhaled it. It tasted so good! My friend got the warm rice salad with black beans and then got the homemade ground filet burger and fries and loved it! We were not going to get dessert, but our server suggested the homemade apple tartin, and we were so glad we listened to her. Warm, tasty and we again inhaled it.\r \r I have not had such a great meal and such great service in a very long time! The vibe was casual and it is a nice room. It was not busy when we walked in about 6:30 pm, but it was pretty packed when we left. They also had some cool ambient background music on that we really liked and would have not expected them to be playing. The server was a girl and I did not get her name, but she really knew the menu (which is huge and has a little bit of everything on it), and definitely steered us in the right direction. She also explained that all of the food is really healthy and that Puran (Chef & Owner) does not use anything from a can and that everything is made fresh daily. Our server was really good and you can tell the food is all really fresh the minute you take a bit. \r \r The had a ok wine list, and prices were really good and they had a really decent beer selection which both of us opted for.\r \r I have been thinking about this meal for over a week, and that is why I decided to post this. I will definitely be back!\r \r more

Our New Spot 6/23/2009

My girlfriend and I ate at Puran's this past weekend and we're making it our new spot. I had the homemade mini-burger. It was very fresh and, according to our waiter, made to order. The burger was delicious. Then I tried my girlfriend's fish. And that was simply the best I ever had. \r \r Oddly, though, they had this wonderful bread sauce that we tried to get to-go. They refused, saying it was for the restaurant only. Other than that, though....\r \r An open kitchen. A friendly staff. And on the way out, we spoke to Puran, who was very detailed and caring about her food. We'll be back soon. Pros: Fantastic Food Cons: An Odd Thing more

I Saw An Insect On A Table Next To Us! 5/11/2009

We came for a lunch, mid-week with some friends. I'd only been here once before, years earlier. It got nasty just as we were finishing our meal.\r I kid you not, there was a cockroaach crawling on the table next to ours. We brought it to the attention of the manager, he gave us half off our meal. A free meal comp would have been nice, but at that point we just wanted to get out.\r Is there anything worse than that?\r \r Pros: the insect seemed to be eating good.. Cons: not a big fan of insects on tables. more

Yummy food, but get up off the wine! 2/14/2009

The food is very good and the specials menu is extensive. The ambience is plain and simple but cozy. Overall, a quite satisfying and reasonably priced meal. However, the wine glasses are run-of-the-mill, old-school-Chinese-restaurant tiny. Please folks, charge a dollar or two more for the wine but serve it in a decent-sized glass, for chrissakes! Pros: food, parking (limited but exists) more

EXCELLENT!! 9/1/2008

Ok obviously the idiot above has never heard of fly season....we have 10 flies around our place as I write this. Definitely ignore the review above as this place is wonderful!! My husband and I eat there every weekend and the staff is very friendly! more

Did I Luck Out? 3/14/2008

I have read some negative reviews of this retaurant here on citysearch and was a little surprised. My girlfriend and I just tried this place last Sunday evening, after having lived in the area for over 2 years. I didn't know what region the food was from, but it seemed Italian/mediterranean. We both enjoyed the food quite a bit. My girlfriend's dish was a seafood pasta. I tasted the mussels, and enjoyed them. I am not much of a ""seafood pasta"" kind of guy though. I got the fried trout special, on a bed of couscous and spinach. I thought it was outstanding really. Totally bone free, firm (but able to break it apart with my fork) and with a mildly tart flavor courtesy of capers and a kind of mustard-wine sauce. It was the best kind of ""full"" feeling, not the kind you get from eating heavy meats, breads or cheeses. The waitress suggested some good white wine. I thought the waitress here was quite nice. She checked on us, and got us what we needed without being intrusive. She certainly wasn't rude. By the end of the meal, my girlfriend and I were feeling so buzzy and indulgent, we got desserts, and those were good too. Most of my other reviews (many of the negative ones especially) have been based upon multiple visits. Hopefully, if I return to Puran's the quality will remain high. I was just surprised to have had such a good experience and then see negative feedback from other diners. This is definately not a cheap eats place. Our bill was right around $100. So I won't make it a weekly occasion. But if someone's in town, it seems like a good place to take them. Los Feliz can attract a lot of uppity scenesters, so maybe it helps that I went on a Sunday early evening. Who knows? Pros: Nice trout. Good bread dip. Not crowded when I went. Cons: One of the shockingly few occasions when I had no complaints. more

san sui melts in your mouth 2/4/2008

try the lotus root! whenever i go and i've been there 4 times since last sunday im treated like im their favorite customer, maybe its because i've introduced myself to Masako their veteran waitress...either way\r the food is divine, sushi that melts in your mouth, and usually we stay til it closes having sake round after sake round while joking with Masako. BEST service and best sushi on the East Side.\r more

Pricey, loud, rude manager 1/6/2008

I was the 3rd arrive-ee of a party of 11 for a friend's Saturday Birthday Brunch. We sat outside on the patio awaiting the rest of the guests when the owner/manager rudely ushered us inside ""your table is inside! if you sit at this patio table I will loose customers!"" - uh.. the place was totally empty. We moved inside and continued the brunch. The place filled and we ate. Food was average all around. It became so noisy inside we were all yelling across the table to talk. II wasn't that hungry so I ordered PLAIN angel hair pasta. They charged me $12.95!!! For plain pasta... Anyway, there are lots more annoyances but the rude owner and the $13 plain pasta tops the list. Avoid!! Pros: Good bread Cons: Pricey, loud, expensive cork fee, rude manager more

So-so Service, Bad Food 8/12/2007

I can't believe that I actually waited 40 minutes outside for it to open.\r \r During nighttime the restaurant does seem to have a good atmosphere to dine in. However, looks can be deceiving. \r My girlfriend and I got a table at the corner right next to 2 very large windows. We were joined later by 3 very large flies just flying around us trying to attack our food. This made me wonder how the restaurant ever got an ""A"" for cleanliness rating. There were 2 waitresses there. One of them seemed nice while the other one never smiled (guess which one served us).\r \r Now to the good part, the food.\r I ordered their San Sui Dinner Set, an order of Salmon Sushi and an order of Toro Sushi.\r The dinner set was nothing special but definitely not worth the $25 they are charging.\r What I dislike more is their sushi. There were way too much rice. And I highly suspect that they charged me $12 for fatty tuna (toro) when they actually brought me plain tuna. The 2 pieces of toro sushi that I got had no fat at all.\r What's even worse was the ramen that my girlfriend ordered. We both believe that it was simply instant noodles with extra vegetables. I apologize if they did not use instant noodles to cook their ramen, but even if they didn't, they might as well should have cause it sure won't taste any different.\r \r My overall experience there was really bad. The service can be improved and the food that you get are just ridiculous. Normally a restaurant with quality like this won't annoy me enough to write a review online. But the combination of their food and their price is what really made this restaurant outrageous. Pros: Seemingly good ambiance and restaurant parking Cons: So-o service and way overpriced food more

Nice light food... 7/29/2007

A perfect place if you're looking for light and healthy dishes.\r \r We had the salmon stuffed with olives and the ahi and both were excellent. Great service as well. Pros: Great light food Cons: A bit expensive more

A Great Dine! 5/1/2007

This is a wonderful place to eat. The food is really good and Puran?s uses fresh, organic (if available) ingredients. I have eaten there over 10 times and have never been unhappy. The chicken noodle soup is out of this world. Also, the bread dip is indescribable. Pros: The Menu Cons: Only 2 wines. Red and White. more

Fresh and healthy but tastey 1/26/2007

Elegant but relaxed. Service is always outstanding. Menu is varied and everything I have ever had there is great. They could jazz up the specials - they seem to have the same ones over and over again. Love the gorgonzola mashed potatoes. Food is always fresh and perfectly prepared. Again, the service is amazing! Pros: service, quality of food and preparation Cons: change up the specials some more

Great Silverlake restaurant 11/21/2006

Came here for dinner and had a great time. Our server was well-versed on the menu offerings, and even made suggestions. The food is delicious, well-priced, and the presentation was superb. This restaurant is very reasonable considering the quality of the food. more

Nothing Special 11/10/2006

I went here on a date and was not at all impressed.\r \r While the menu is varied and interesting, the food was nothing special. I got the Ahi Tuna and found it to be overall pretty flavorless and boring. My date had the steak, and he was quite impressed, but on the whole it is not somewhere I would remember to go back to.\r \r As far as the service, again, it was nothing special - the staff were courteous, but did the barest minimum- took our order, brought our food, gave us the bill.\r \r All in all, nothing special. more

Too hot for summer time 9/2/2006

I cant write a good review for this restaurant, I got sick eating the Ahi tuna, which I think was not fresh, The restaurant was almost 100 degrees inside and I had my Ahi done rare. It sat in the heat for about 10 minutes before my friends steak was ready (His steak was so so). By the time I finished my food, it was sitting in 100 degree heat for at least 45 minutes. I think something went wrong because I got really sick. I usually do not get sick but this was bad. more

bad experience 8/16/2006

the sushi was ok, nothing special. the grilled calamari was undercooked and had to send it back. then they charged us for things we didn't order. we noticed they did the same thing to the people sitting next to us. more

Love the gorgonzolla mashed potatoes! 8/15/2006

The herbed chicken is really good, the lemon barley soup is FANTASTIC and the service is great. The prices are pretty decent too! Pros: food and service are WONDERFUL more

Unpleasantly Noisy 4/29/2006

The food is good at Puran's but the restaurant is so noisy, so loud, so unpleasantly and dismissively uncomfortable that its virtues are submerged by its oppressive ambience. Perhaps you like to yell at your meal partner. If so, Puran is the place to go. You will emerge exhausted and battered by the din. It is hard to believe that the owners are not aware of this problem. However, their aparent refusal to even put an ounce of acoustic tile on the ceiling speaks for itself. Pros: good food, good wine list Cons: oppressive noise more

Tasty local haunt 1/21/2006

We have been meaning to try Puran's for some time and finally got around to it. The entrees were excellent, composed of high quality meat (we had the filet mignion and ahi tuna) and extremely tasty side dishes (notably the vegetables). The appetizers were priced quite high (we had the firecracker shrimp which was excellent, albeit very rich) and the corkage fee has increased to $15. The ambience is quite pleasant for a date or small group dinner, and the service was prompt and friendly. A nice neighborhood meal, and very easy to walk in to. Pros: Delicious food, Friendly staff Cons: Expensive appetizers more
