I went to Sam's Shoe Service based on its popular rating of 8.4 in City Search. However, I had a very bad experience. \r
It started out well. It was after 5 pm on a Saturday and I called the shop to ask if it was still open. He said he would wait for me if I was coming soon. \r
Then it went bad: I arrived about 5 minutes later and showed him my shoes. He grabbed them and disappeared to the back of the shop and started working on them right away. No discussion about did I want to leave them, how the repair would be done or look, how much it would cost, etc. (His English seemed pretty bad, so maybe we could not have communicated about any of these things.)\r
Then it got worse: After about half an hour, he came back to the front of the shop and showed me the shoes. I was shocked. It was the worst re-heeling job I had ever seen; very shoddy. Perhaps it was a difficult job, but in that case I should have been warned that the result might disappoint. It certainly did disappoint -- especially for the $30 he demanded as payment. \r
And worse: I tried wearing the shoes. The heels were nailed into the sole and the nails poke up and stabbed the sole of my foot on anything but the lightest step. \r
May this wasn't the regular guy. I don't know. On one hand, I can't imagine how a shop could stay in business if what I experienced was anything like the norm. But on the other, I'm never going back to risk $30 and a favorite pair of shoes in order to find out.
