About 6 months after I first moved to the city I decided it was time to move on from the barber shop haircut. After some yellow page searching, of all things, I found Salon Santa Cruz and its premier stylist, Katya. In a scene that was likely similar to a beauty school exam, I showed up with basically a shaggy mop-top and told Katya to do whatever she wanted, and she did not dissapoint. The chic and cosmopolitan haircut provided me with a confidence and self-image boost. Katya's best attribute is that she is able to apply her considerable talents within the parameters of a customer's request: basically, if you tell her you want your hair cut in a certain way, she will both honor your request while sprinkling in dashes of her own style that we have all come to know and love. The Salon itself is fairly nice too, with a friendly and relaxed staff that offers complimentary cookies, juice and sometimes even wine to its customers. Having said all this, Salon Santa Cruz is not devoid of drawbacks: primarily, it is too expensive. $60 for a men's haircut is a tad steep, and said price has caused me to get haircuts less frequently then I normally would like. The irony here of course is that if the price were lower, I would get more annual haircuts (and spend more overall money!).
