Back in the late 80s/early 90s, my mom was the first to introduce me to this family run Banh mi shop. Till now, I've known and pretty much kept the knowledge of this tasty place to myself. Banh mi, for those not in the know, are huge, cheap ($3) and tasty Vietnamese sandwiches. In my opinion, Saigon Banh Mi makes the best around town. The owner will personally make it to your liking. I like mine with everything on it.She'll personally toast the bread, then layer it with garlicky-bbq pork, shredded and pickled carrots and radishes, fresh cilantro, pate, long, crispy slices of cucumbers, jaiya (thinly sliced, vietnamese pork cold cuts), thin spread of mayonnaise, chili peppers and hot sauce.Fresh, hot and tasty. One may ask for an all pork or vegetable version too.Besides banh mi, they also make a nice Vietnamese salad, sell coconut juices, iced coffees and a limited selection of sticky and sweet desserts.Banh mi sandwiches tend to go fast here. Best to arrive before they are all sold out: go before 1pm!This hole in the wall place is one of the shops that line outside the East Broadway Mall. Located on Forsythe street between Division Street and East Broadway -- where the Chinatown buses line up.
