Let me first say I've never been to Japan...but if this is as ""traditional"" as it gets...I'm not impressed. I eat sushi from various restaurants at least 3-4 times a week (i kn...

The Best of South Jersey 8/20/2005

I have tried many Japanese restaurants in South Jersey, and Sagami is still by far the best. I brought my whole family here, and they all loved it. Located in a nondescript building in Collingswood, Sagami serves up all sorts of fresh sushi and Japanese meals. But don't let the building fool you. Inside is a gorgeous "teahouse"/ Kyoto style interior. I recommend trying the Salmon Skin Roll (has a little crunch in the middle! so good.) , the Sashimi platter, (Mmmm... and to think I was once afraid of eating raw food!) and the beef sukiyaki. As this is a Japanese eatery, remember that the portions are small. If you are really hungry, you might want to order more than one entree and appetizer for yourself. Also, in my opinion, the food prices are kind of high, so be prepared! If you want to go out for a special night, try Sagami. It is a unique restaurant that is worth visiting. more

Fresh Fresh Sushi 8/17/2005

If you are lamenting the fact that there is a lack of good Japanese restaurants in Philadelphia, and are willing to go a little bit farther for good raw fish, check this place out. It's right over the Ben Franklin Bridge in New Jersey, and is usually packed, so I would suggest you call them to make sure you can actually get a table. Their sashimi is really fresh, and I have never been disappointed making the small trek out there (really only 15 minute from down town center city). more

Good japanese food 8/13/2005

Minutes away from Ben Franklin or Walt Whitman bridge on Rt 130 South lays a Japanese restaurant that is well known for the excellent raw/cooked food. Order the Chirashi, which is served in a bowl with the sushi rice on bottom and the raw fish on top, or their famous Age-dashi tofu. Each time when I get back to Philadelphia, I must either eat a steak sandwich and much needed trip across the bridge to my favorite restaurant. I have tried this restaurant during lunch and dinner and not one time have I not been dissatisfied. It's a BYO!! more
