Best

Over the last few years since I have lived in the area I have gone to SOB's maybe 5 or 6 times. Each time was for either a Hip-Hop or Reggae show but they do cater to all sorts of...

We went to S.O.B.'s for a birthday dinner where a large group attempted to enjoy a meal before making our way to the dance floor. The mojitos were welcome and a highlight, as the ...

Had an awesome time at this club! 10/22/2006

Lourdes, I want to thank you so much for accommodating my group last night.  We were about 20 in the end and everyone had a wonderful time.  They will definitely be coming back.  You and your staff were fantastic!! Best, Jules Pros: Great Music, Atmosphere and Service Cons: Make sure you know what music they'll be playing that night more

Great 30th Bday Celebration! 10/17/2006

My guests loved my 30th birthday party at S.O.B.s! The logistics were simple, your help made the party easy to plan, and everyone loved the music and atmosphere! The S.O.B.s staff made my night easy - I had 45 guests, and they all had a wonderful time! I got loads of compliments on my choice of venue. Thanks so much for such a memorable event! :)FC I definitely plan on coming back soon - and I'd love to take advantage of the passes mentioned in your email. Pros: Great Live Music, Awesome Location, Excellent Customer Service Cons: Music played depends on the night more

THE place for that Big Party! 5/16/2006

I recently held my wife's Surprise 5-0h! Birthday Party at SOBs, 40 of us total. Our party coordinator was a true professional & SOBs staff treated us like old friends - they couldn't do enough. Food was exotic, delicious and plentiful; ditto the booze. In a blink, Ogans lit the party and club on fire. By 11:00, you're part of a pulsating mass of humanity occupying every inch of tile in the place. You won't want to leave. Our friends are still raving about it. Most importantly, my wife is still grinning and wanting to return. Latin beats now thump this Anglo house. If you want a party for the books, do it at SOBs. But don't be cheap about it. I took the 3-hour premium bar/dinner package, and it's the best money I ever spent - period. Life is about having great times with friends and family. SOBs delivers. Pros: Atmosphere, Music/Dancing, The Staff more

Friendly atmosphere, Exotic mood, Great food! 5/10/2006

I have been going to SOB's regularly for almost 2 years now. It is one of the most fun places to go dancing, eat great food, and/or listen to live music. There is always live music, and the selected musicians are very talented. AND the food! The food is amazing. The dishes are original and full of flavor. it's some oThe staff is genuinely friendly, and genuinely like being there. I highly recommend the crab cakes, swordfish, and pork chops... but you really can't go wrong. Most of the staff have been there for quite awhile, so they are very knowledgeable and helpful with the menu. One of the biggest reasons I keep going back is that the staff and the patrons are so friendly. It is not your typical bar/club atmosphere. You have genuine people who just love good dancing and good music. more

Taste of Rio 4/17/2006

Loved this downtown club/restaurant. The menu is Portuguese-Brazilian with little mix of Caribbean. Loved the Chili Salmon with the corn arepa. So good!! The tropical drinks and fabulous server had me smiling all night. I am Brazilian and love to dance so that is what I did when I went there, danced all night. My friends who went with me loved it. Going to S.O.B.s just to do free-style Brazilian dance was the best thing. I feel much more confident with music of my country but I hadnt done so for a long time and to know that I still have some Samba No Pe was heaven. Nothing was better for my soul than those magic drums. Pros: Great Music, Good Food, nice crowd Cons: Long Wait for Table more

Don't go with the package deal 2/22/2006

I made reservations a month advance for 30 people for a birthday. The SOB's "coordinator" suggested a package deal to make it easier. Went with $65/pp package and asked if there would be enough food. She guaranteed that everyone would be full. They stuck us in a cramped corner so that I couldn't even find the table when I bought the birthday girl in for her surprise. The food was so minimal that the guys were left hungry. They brought out 1 finger food platter for every 2 people. $130 for ONE platter?!?!? The food was so small and tasteless. I was so disappointed and can only imagine how robbed the rest of the guests felt. 2 thousand dollars for approximately 15 plates of the same food. Hardly worth it. We went there for some Sounds of Brazil and all we got were sounds of a club...hip hop/reggae. Pros: a small dance floor Cons: value, food, price more

2 hrs only for a dinner (new reservation policy) 1/26/2006

We reserved 24 hrs. ahead a table for 5 people and were told right before we wanted to go there that we had to leave the table after 2 hours. They said, it´s a new policy. Therefore be advised: Be punctual, eat fast, don´t talk too much, because the next crowd is waiting. It doesn´t matter if you want to order more...It´s sad ! I used to love that place ! Pros: Excellent music, friendly crowd Cons: table reservations, overpriced drinks more

Unless Your favorite Artist is there DON'T Bother 6/28/2005

I like to go there when my favorite artist is set to perform, it's not a good place to socialize or drop in. The drinks are waaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy to expensive and half the time the bartender doesn't know what to mix. The place is not what it use to be and it's a shame. They are trying to go for trendy and it's far from it. All the tables are reserved and god forbid you should need a place to lean. Ughghg - I beg you don' waste your time. Pros: Live Band, Short Wait on Line Cons: Pricey Drinks, Bad Parking, Snobby Bartenders more

Nightmare 4/19/2005

If you want a bad Las Vages review - you found you spot. Getting sick off the food didn't help. more

Shot-in-the-dark came up golden. 4/10/2005

My gf and I were looking for some good entertainment for our one night in NYC and chose S.O.B's because it was a Samba Night. Free live show with reservation before 8, couldn't pass that up. Immediately accessible once out of the Houston St. T stop, we rushed inside to shelter ourselves from horizontal rain. You couldn't ask for better value. The food was tasty and affordable at $15-25/plate, the sangria was delicious, and the place wasn't too crowded that night (probably due to weather), though it filled in later. Then the 13-member band Ogans came on and performed nearly two hours of rousing samba numbers. During this show sometimes costumed dancers would surprise the audience and dance for certain songs. Really, it was quite a time. I recommend getting there early to get a good view of the stage, as well as ordering sangria and the 'volcano' chocolate cake. Pros: atmosphere, sangria, great live music Cons: n/a more

  • The Background
The name stands for "Sounds of Brazil," but this nicely sized room, decorated in full bamboo tropical regalia, showcases everything from Trinidadian calypso and Jamaican reggae to Cuban salsa, samba and the latest in Afro-pop. It also pulls in big-name performers, old-school and new, like bossa nova queen Astrud Gilberto, R&B smasher Angie Stone, street poet Gil Scott Heron and the hip-hopping Beatnuts.

    The Experience
The kitchen offers decent fare and the drinks are appropriately fruity and exotic, encompassing mojitos and margaritas, as well as tiki-like selections. S.O.B.'s attracts an interesting mix: Prepare to sway and swing among hip locals, international jet-setters, and of course, tourists.
