Dance here but do not eat here 3/22/2009

I really enjoyed the band and the atmosphere of pure fun....we danced the night away. I ordered catfish with fries and slaw...red beans and rice on the side...all awful...fish was not fresh nor properly seasoned...fries were greasy...beans and rice were from a can, no flavor at all...hubby had chicken philly sandwich...it was bad....hire a real cook. It's just wrong to serve hungry people lousy food... Pros: wonderful music-good service-fun crowd Cons: the food was awful more

Music Yes, Food No 7/26/2007

It's a good thing Rum Boogie has the best House Band and music on the street because the food it terrible. Service and friendliness is fine it's just that they can't even fix simple food good anymore. I have been coming to Rum Boogie since it opened (22yrs) and it's only been the last couple of years they forgot how to fix food. I guess they feel they don't have to try to hard on the food since it's mostly tourist traffic but for crying out loud at least have a burger tha is fresh and hot and change the oil in the fryer sometime. Go see James Govan and Don Chandler or any of the other bands but eat somewhere else first. Pros: Great Music, nice atmosphere, friendly service Cons: Food is horrible, even simple things. more

Not a place to eat 2/12/2007

My husband and I visited the Rum Boogie for lunch, and although the service was friendly the food was aweful. He ordered a burger and fries and I ordered a chicken sandwich, fries and green tomatoes. I really find it hard to believe that its hard to make bad food that was so simple, but they did it. The burger patty was a little bigger than a 50 cent piece and burnt black , the fries ewww... and for 9 bucks.. the chicken and tomatoes were no better. I really would not suggest this place for food. The bathroom was terrible!!!!!! Looked as though it hadn't been cleaned in a week(or more). After that it made me wonder just what the kitchen could look like. more

Cool place to see music and have some drinks, but the food is not good! 2/6/2007

I really like to go to the Rum Boogie to have a few drinks and hear some great live bands. Today I went there for lunch and while the service was as good as I expected, the food left a BAD taste in my mouth. It is pretty difficult to serve a bad chicken philly and even worse fries, but somehow they managed to do it. It was the worst food I have had at a restaurant in years, and the thing is I am very easy to please. Just to let you know the other two people I had lunch with ordered from the meat and three lunch menu and thought it was pretty good! more

fun fun fun 2/6/2005

I love going in there, service is not to hot, but was very busy too. I have been in there alot and the food can range from average to above average. I don't go there to eat, I just go to have fun and drink. The band is always great. Pros: good music, good fun, dance time Cons: parking, service is slow, places to sit more

Blue Plate Special & Blues 7/7/2004

Try to get there in time for the Blue Plate Special at lunch. Order the sausage plate to start, a tradition in Memphis. The servers are REALLY friendly & your food will start to come before you're done checking out the memorabilia (the precursor to the Hardrock). The catfish sandwich is great, too. Pros: Friendly Servers, Tasty food, Memorabilia more

best ribs in town 5/11/2004

Took my wife to memphis for mothers days. I've been looking for some good ribs and I know I've found them at the Rum boogie Cafe. You can get your ribs wet or dry, so I picked dry. Thay gave me the sauce on the side. I cant believe I ate that whole slab so fast. Those ribs are some of the best ribs I have ever eaten. The live music and drinks are the icing on the cake too. Pros: real blues atmosphere, outstanding food, great service more

More mediocrity 1/8/2003

As is the case with the whole Beale st. music scene...most of the bars (with the exception of the New Daisy) feature the same "house" bands night after night. At one time, you could go to Beale and catch several national recording acts on any given night. But now? Pathetic. Locals who are in the know regard Beale with a certain loathing because we feel they have compromised the abundent talent touring. If you come to Memphis, your best bet is the Gibson Guitar, New Daisy, Cooper-Young Deli, Map Room, Blue Monkey or the Hi-Tone. Cheers. more

Real Blues -- Aching to Getcha 8/30/2002

Rum Boogie is without a doubt, the best club in Memphis. Some of the biggest names of the blues pass through there. Seeing Pine Top Perkins was quite a thrill for me. Their regular act, the Rum Boogie Band is no nonsense down home blues. The lead singer, now I don't know him, but he's got the look of "I've earned it, and I aim to keep it." Doesn't look the type to cause any trouble but I suspect if you start it, you'll wish you hadn't. more

  • The Scene
Of all the clubs and bars on Beale Street, this is one not to miss. If the superfine rum selection and beer aren't enough to entice you, the Cajun and barbecue menu should--ribs, fried catfish, gumbo and red beans and rice served by fast and friendly servers. Nighttime is all about hot R&B with the house-favorite James Govan and the Boogie Blues Band. More often than not, national acts just show up and jam on stage. Be sure to gawk at the club's ultra-cool collection of over 350 guitars, autographed by people who have played there, from Aerosmith to Stevie Ray Vaughan to the B-52's.

    The Booze
An extensive rum selection is key to fruity, fun concoctions like the Boogie Rum Runner (Malibu, pineapple and orange juice) or the Blueberry Hill (Bacardi silver, Razzmatazz, juice and 7-up).
