Editorial review from Citysearch 9/11/2012

I have had many, many massages. Some good, some not so good. But for a long time, I've been on a hunt for a GREAT massage. And, eureka, I've found it! I recently moved to NE Portland and took a chance on a massage studio that I stumbled across: Root Whole Body. Michael G. was the therapist who worked on me. I can't even express how amazing my treatment was! I will never go see anyone else. But, to my complete shock, I learned that this amazing therapist is being under utilized. I just can't believe that Root is not bragging about having the best massage therapist in Oregon. What are they thinking?! I've never gone out of my way to advertise for a company, but I could not in good conscience keep this information to myself. If you are looking for the best massage imaginable, please do yourself a favor and go see Michael G. at Root Whole Body. You will not be disappointed! more

Best Massage EVER! 8/24/2011

So, I purchased a 90 minute massage via GroupOn, thinking what a deal . . . but then scheduling was a bit of a challenge, and then I had to reschedule, which Root gladly arranged, but again, the timing wasn't perfect (price for using GroupOn, I suppose). I nearly decided just to bag the whole idea. That would have been a huge mistake. My impressions: The facility is extremely nice and relaxing. The waffle-weave robe, the flip flops, the changing room and showers, the dry sauna, the tea room--all this is totally first rate. Oh, but I was there for an intense, long-over due massage. Ruth totally delivered--seriously the most thorough and intense massage I have had (I guess I've had 25 over the years). Ruth, thanks. Highly highly recommend both Ruth and Root. more

Take a deep breath 6/15/2011

I live in the neighborhood and have been meaning to investigate the business and finally did by attending a Yoga Basics workshop and I am glad I did! Staff helpful, most class participation suitable for space, facility clean, and relaxing atmosphere. As a 50 year old with a desk job that doesn't exercise regularly I found the Yin and Restorative Yin classes to be approachable and not the least bit intimidating. My experience prompted me to purchase a package and to educate myself about Yoga (recommended reading Yoga Mind, Body & Spirit by Donna Farhi and Yin Yoga Outline of A quiet practice by Paul Grilley). I am taking it slow and stead more

Spirit and Soul and Body at Root 4/14/2011

Root is a place where peace and a sense of calm hits as you enter the door. After returning from Hawaii and catching a staph infection (UGH!), there was one place I knew my soul and body needed to go...Root. Outstanding massage from Ramah helped me heal. So happy they are in the neighborhood and that I can count on getting what I need! more

ROOT is a treat! 11/12/2010

Never written a review before...never have felt motivated but after a couple of visits to ROOT WHOLE BODY I felt I discovered a big secret worth sharing. . A friend suggested I visit ROOT when I was suffering from plantar fasciitis. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of my therapist but she was fantastic. I experienced immediate improvement and left feeling lighter and more flexible. After my excellent massage experience I decided to splurge on a facial. The skin care person was very gentle and after asking alot of questions treated me to a relaxing, warm facial. She also gave me some great advice on skincare. I left with an Eminence facial product that I absolutely love! IT was spendy but so worth it! Absolutely calm, quiet, CLEAN, upscale but not overdone environment. Over the years I have been to many spas...this is much more intimate and personal than a traditional spa. No hair or nail services, ROOT provides an experience truly in a class of its own...ROOT's philosophy promotes whole body wellness. I am definitely plan to continue to visit ROOT. more

New Facial Addict 11/12/2010

Went for my first facial ever a year or so ago - I am now an addict! The bonus part for me is the nice upper body massage that goes with it. Beautiful facility, complimentary tea in the ""tea room"" area and complimentary sauna available. The massages and yoga classes are also top-notch. This place is great!!!!!! more

ROOT masseuse solves chronic shoulder problem.. 11/11/2010

I had the recent good luck to have a gift certificate to ROOT which I used for a 90-minute massage. The gal on the phone got me in at very short notice (five hours, actually) on a Saturday. And she was sweet enough to confirm the type of massage I was interested in (relaxing not torturous.) I really enjoyed the calming, modern simplicity of the changing rooms and the waiting room wherein I spent a few minutes catching up on some reading before I met Coco, my masseuse. She did such a good job (in a pain-free way) that she actually solved for my weird raised right shoulder (caused by a stubbornly tight muscle in my neck.) Thanks ROOT! I'll definitely be coming back. more

Customer Service Could Improve 3/9/2010

I have to say that I am a little disappointed in the recent customer service at Root Whole Body. I scheduled a pregnancy massage and had to cancel it same day and I rescheduled for two days later. They charged me the late cancellation fee but then when I came in I overheard the receptionist allow someone else to cancel their massage the same day without charging them. I have had massage other places where there is more compassion and understanding and where, I think, they don't only care about your $$. When I mentioned this to other friends, two mentioned that they also feel as though they are just a dollar sign. Pros: Good Massage Therapists Cons: Do they really care about us? more

Fabulous Skin Care and Service 8/27/2009

For my birthday, I was treated to spa services at Root. I chose to visit the esthetician, Sally for a facial. It was the best I've ever experienced. She is a true professional. I have had about 15+ facials in my lifetime and this was superior in many categories; from the products she used to the tranquil atmosphere to frendly chit-chat - all wonderful. \r \r Thanks for a great experience, I can't wait to return to Root for another facial and to try other services. Pros: Sally Ann Hobart is fantastic more

They had me at Sauna! 12/17/2008

This is the first review I have EVER written and I am so happy with this place I have to pass it on. I've only been to Root twice, the first time on a recommedation from Blue Sky Wellness. I received a massage both times from Nealy and it is hands down the best massage I've received. She is great at reading your muscles and working with them to release tension. I cannot recommend her enough. Also, the fact that they have a sauna just makes the whole experience that much better. I've had a great experience all around, including friendly and helpful front desk staff. Every time I've called and been there the staff have been awesome. Pros: Serene atmosphere, excellent massage, friendly staff Cons: Parking more

Snotty Staff, Botched Appointments 11/5/2008

I've been going to root on and off since they opened and have to say, this place has really gone down the toilet. The last time i went, my massage therapist called out sick and they forgot to call me and let me know so I show up for an appointment to be turned away with little more than ""We're so sorry. Would you like to reschedule?"" I've also had more than one chilly reception on the phone when calling to make appointments and today was told they only offer massage appointments on the weekend, after 4pm. Gimme a break! The one shining star is Jay, one of the yoga instructors but you can find her teaching elsewhere. Which is where I'd recommend you go - elsewhere. There are so many nicer places to get a massage where you feel welcome, pampered and valued as a customer. I'll not be going back to root. Pros: jay for yoga instruction, sauna Cons: rude, chilly staff, overpriced services, high turnover, disorganized more

Awesome massage 9/7/2008

My friend took me here on the recommendation of a woman at her work who is also a massage therapist. I've since been back once and had a different therapist. I typically get a massage once a month or so and this place has the BEST massage hands-down. They also have a sauna and a really nice locker room. Massage is a little more pricey than usual - $75 for 60 mins - but you definitely get what you pay for. Pros: Awesome massage, great facility, lots of available massage slots, Gelato next door (oops, is that a con? ;) Cons: a little pricier than most massage providers more

love it 3/24/2008

love it. love it. love it. are you people high? LOVE IT!!! the classes are amazing, it's clean and welcoming, and the front desk staff are wonderful. don't hesitate go to shaney's class and call it a day.\r \r Pros: everything Cons: nothing more

Excellent Acupuncture, Massage and Yoga 1/20/2008

Well, it seems as though the new management really cares about the community and they have been offering some great services. The three massages I have had there with Bettina, Melanie and Patricia were super and the acupuncturist, Liz, is very talented. Shaney's yoga class is the BEST and she will kick your butt into shape. If you are not sure where to start, ask for Tara and she will help direct you. Blessings!!! Pros: Acupuncture, Massage and Yoga! Tea and Sauna free. more

My new second home 11/13/2007

A friend recently recommended Root in the Irvington district and i have now been there three times in the past two weeks. I'm already hooked. The moment you walk in, you feel complete serenity and comfort. The people were super friendly and the students i have met in yoga class are as well. As a new resident of this area, i'm happy to be making friends so quickly. I haven't had a massage yet, but all i hear are rave reviews about their therapists. And the friend who recommended this place just apparently had the best facial of her life last week. So what prompted me to hop on to citysearch is that i recalled reading a poor review when originally researching and just thought i should back them up with good feedback. I will be spending a lot of time there. Great variety of classes and a peaceful environment. Five stars all the way. Pros: tea service and sauna with every visit Cons: usually have to park on the street more

Great instructors, horrible customer service 10/25/2007

Root positions itself as a high-end wellness center. And indeed, it has talented massage therapists, top-notch yoga instructors, a gorgeous dressing room and showers, and a relaxing tea room. Unfortunately their customer service is totally sub-par.\r I've gone there for numerous services over the past year, and felt compelled to write a review, because compared to every other yoga or massage place I've been in Portland, Root's customer service is strangely inattentive, impersonal and unresponsive to requests and feedback.\r One time I arrived for a massage, and the therapist was out sick. Front desk's response? ""There's no one else available. Would you like to reschedule?"" Typically a place will go out of their way to make amends in a situation like this, Root did nothing.\r On several occasions, the front desk people have been downright rude to other customers and me - but these weren't the front desk employees, they were self-identified ""management"" on every occasion! Which makes it so much worse, because who do you direct complaints to? If management is rude, inflexible and unapologetic, you know you're in trouble.\r So, if you go to Root, go for the yoga instructors and massage therapists, but don't expect a Nordstrom-calibur customer service experience from the people who run the place. If you're going to ask anything of management, put on your armor and set your expectations low. Pros: Great yoga instructors + massage therapists, beautiful ambiance Cons: Impersonal and occasionally rude customer service more

my skin looks great!! 6/15/2007

a friend gave me a gift certificate for a facial at root and i have to say... WOW. my skin has never looked so good, and the experience was incredible. marywynn, the esthetician, is extremely knowledgeable and taught me a lot about my skin. (i thought i had dry skin, and i don't ... i was using all the wrong products!) she made me feel so comfortable, and the lymphatic massage she gave me rocked my world. i have never had a facial like this before... i will definitely be back! Pros: amazing facials!! relaxing atmosphere, sauna more

Amazing massage 6/15/2007

I had the most wonderful massage at Root last week. I had a woman by the name of Kat and I'm still feeling the effect of her work! I have had quite a few massages and found that Kat's therapeutic technique and relaxing/mesmerizing style were one of the best combinations i've ever experienced. She was knowledgeable about my concerns and listened to my requests. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I was impressed by her follow through at the end of the massage. She brought me water and recommended stretches as well. I thoroughly enjoyed my massage and my time at root as a whole. I thought the atmosphere was relaxing and the staff were extremely attentive. I felt like i had the place to myself! I highly recommend it for someone looking for a quiet, relaxing, and truly rejuvenating experience. Pros: Fabulous Tea Room more

Does this place even exist? They don't bother calling you back.... 1/10/2007

I live nearby, was going to use a coupon that I had, called and left a message...no response. I called and left another message. No one ever called back. I'm pretty sure I was clear on what I was looking for (a massage) and I know I left my name and number. I've never heard of a business that is fairly new, NOT calling a potential customer back. Too bad....I would have recommend this place to everyone I knew had I been actually able to schedule a massage. As it is, I will steer friends and family somewhere else where they actually want to get business. more

Root is a resource for enlightened and curious people who embrace holistic health care.

Owner Message
  • This year marks our 5th anniversary. It is truly inspiring to see the community of neighbors & friends who make Root a regular part of their life. While we've definitely gone through our growing pains, it seems our intentions & vision have never waivered, which is to provide a place for those who embrace holistic health to be still, get grounded & remember that they were born a beautiful, whole being.
In meditation, I sit in awe & gratitude for the quality of people we have in our community, the many teachers, healers and guides who share the same standards & intentions when they walk through our doors every day. We continue to beat our collective drum that preventative health care is not self-indulgence, but rather necessary self-care that allows one to ultimately take better care of themselves and others. Thank you for allowing us to be your resource for holistic health care.
