It's a lounge, not a disco hall? 11/17/2009

I went there for a birthday celebration and read some Citysearch reviews beforehand to see if the place was stuck up and that I needed to dress up to get in. The reviews mentioned "no attitude" "no ropes" "secret entrance" and some other, encouraging hints. Well, I guess you have to enter off the "corridor"now and there was a rope and I had a slight tinge of attitude before I told the door guy about the reivews I read. I was let in and basically had a hassle-free evening. The place is well decorated, but not spacious. My party was confined to a space that was shared by two other large groups. As the night went on, the space got smaller and I was dancing in the bathroom to show all my moves. There was plenty of action, but the music that night, was pretty straight forward "prom-style" and not my cup of tea. So, if I hit up this joint again, I am going 10-11:30ish. Enjoy! Pros: Decor, Service Cons: Space, Identity more

what happened 10/4/2009

Big Dre, is no longer at the door. he was one of the reasons why i went. dj boston plays great music. other than that, the room is dead now. i will never go there again< its not the same, Pros: its still free Cons: the best doorman in hollywood is no longer there more

Real bar, real people, and the only place in hollywood with a great vibe 7/19/2008

The bar looks great and the vibe feels good. Check their website for special events because they always have something going on throughout the week. Music isn't typical of what's going on in the rest of hollywood, which i like (not commercial radio), and it's the perfect place to throw parties, my girls and I love it here. more

Best TUESDAY night HOT SPOT 5/5/2008

I DJ here on tuesdays, and honestly, the crowds here are pretty amazing. This definitely a NY bar in a LA setting. Very low-key, and the music is always right and danceable. Hosted by Keith Wilson (MOSCOW, BETA, 82) this night promises fantastic DJ's and always special guests. To be regularly informed, come out on a Tuesday and mix up with the crowd. Key arrival times are 10pm and DJ's spin till 2am. Never a cover, Never a list, just good times. Pros: Lots of Room Cons: Parking more

This is A REAL BAR! 3/31/2008

I went to The Room on a Tues. night with a buddy of mine and I was blown away that there is an actual BAR in Hollywood! I'm sure I speak for many when I say I am so tired of the CLUBS in Hollywood. What an amazing concept they have at this place...big beautiful bar with real bartenders, live dj's that don't spin radio music (or more importantly "GET LOW") and big seating areas to relax in (without having to spend $600 for a bottle of Grey Goose). Crowd was fantastic and the back patio is where it's at!! It just feels the way a bar should feel...just chill and right without all the b.s. you usually encounter. It's NY in LA. The real NY. All you "clubhoppers" and "hollywood weekenders" stay away please! Leave this one to those of us who get it and aren't trying to fake it. more

What happened to The room????? 2/24/2008

This used to be my favorite bar in Hollywood. I used to like to go there because of the non pretentious vibe and mixed bag of people. Well thats all changed now. I tried to go on a Thursday night and was turned away by some kid with attitude at the door. I thought I would give it another try and went back on Sunday. The warm vibe is gone now and has been replaced with a cold institutionalized feel. Drinks are super over priced and the music was horrible throbbing techno. The place was empty and I could not even carry on a conversation with my friend due to the overly load music. Too bad about this place. It has become just another Hollywood nightclub. Pros: was once cool Cons: bad music, cold atmosphere, overpriced drinks more

Thug life on the Cahuenga crawl 2/18/2008

Hootchie mammas with beer bellies and shaved headed home boys in baggies. The high price of drinks doesn't change the low caliber of clientele. more

The Room is it 10/11/2007

Just Go. It's newly reopened after a long renovation and expansion and happily there are now some improvements over the old very cool place. Improvements?....they actually now have clean full sized bathrooms. Yes. And an outdoor patio. Check on that as well. Plus the same old dark, cool, slightly subversive vibe. It's a winner and not your typical Hollywood spot. Pros: Cool, dark, clean, comfortable, back patio, good music, off-beat Cons: parking is expensive. Cahuenga is crowded but then again there are lot's of options there. more

Very Nice 9/16/2007

My boyfriend and I went here last week and it was very nice. As soon as I walked in I thought "I can't wait to tell my girls and plan a girls night out!" Not only was it romantic but the background music and ambiance was just right. I would recommend it! more

Unbelievable. I can't believe this is the old 9/9/2007

I took a first date here and I was shocked and befuddled to see that the famed backdoor entrance immortalized in Swingers is not there anymore! Instead, they bought the shop next door after they closed, broke down the wall and turned it into a wider, swankier bar with hotel-styled mirrors, chic 50's style wood-panelling, and deep, leather lounge benches in two brand new areas divided off by wood-dividers...the only thing that is similar to the old The Room is the deep-red signature low lights! I'm telling you unbelievable. Pros: Romantic, laid-back, all around well-done! Cons: Parking still is horrible, of course more

Best Kick back Bar in Hollywood 8/25/2007

As a former bartender of Hollywood n Highland, I have always considered The Room the best bar there is. And now that they have finished renovations, I'll surely be taking all my friends there. It's a place that the tourists don't know about, the trendy snobs won't hang out at, and the bartenders know their stuff. It's a dimly lit, no cover, place for any occasion. The music is always great for Hip Hop and the DJ's actually know how to mix, unlke some other phony places that overcharge. Right at Hollywood n Cahuenga, you can bar hop within feet of another bar, and never have to pay a cover. I'm glad the Room is still standing, it'll always be the Heart of Hollywood. Pros: Pretty Girls, Smart bartenders, great Hip Hop Cons: N/A more

Dumb dirty spot to chill 6/6/2006

This little itty bitty room, that is dark as hell, and often times funky...on a good night, has some grooves that will make you push and shove to the dance floor. Sure, the dance floor is about the size of my PT Cruiser but it is tolerable. Sure, you will sweat and have pit marks on your shirt, but you will have a good time. Pros: Good music Cons: The smell of bodily fluids more

Ugh!!! 3/7/2005

This may very well be the worst bar I've ever stepped foot into. After a 2 block trek through a back alley, past ruffians from all walks of life. I walked into a bar which size literally lived up to it's name. People were grinding each other in some sort of mating ritual unbeknownst to me. I continues forward with resilience as I was literally suffocating on the foul ambience. After walking through the bar. (Which took 5 minutes of bumper to bumper, elbow to elbow traffic) I was dismayed and set aghast with the knowledge that there was only one way in and only one way out. After linebackering my way back to the portal in which I entered, I vowed never to set foot in this place again! I only hope any self respecting bar goer would do the same! more

not the same,, but still good 6/30/2004

The room seems to be getting discovered by everyone now,, it has lost a lot of that underground feel with all the tourists and no smoking...its still a fun place with a great crowd,,,music is all over the place,,Ive been giong for years and will keep going back.,,get there early and get a booth,, you'll make plenty of new friends because they will all want a place to sit. Pros: people, strong drinks more

Damn it's small... 6/22/2004

But like the preface says, in a good way. It's very "Hollywood", a la the movie "Swingers" with the back alley entrance and no name. Keeps the tourists away. The "dance floor" is the 6 inches separating the bar from the DJ. Nice nonetheless. Just try not to do the running man or you're liable to send the speakers to the other end of the bar. Drinks are reasonable. Be careful on who you intend to pick up on cause it's pretty dark in there. Good place to stop by and check out cause it's always a crowded room. No pun intended. Pros: Back alley entrance more

Smokers No More! 8/1/2002

The Room has been renowned for darkness and plumes of toxic smoke but the management recently put in place a NO SMOKING policy so all non-smokers can rejoice, you won't have to worry about waking up to your pillow and hair stinking like an ashtray!! Monday and Tuesday nights are really going off now - Monday has rotating DJ's and Tuesday's are DIRTY, a seriously eclectic rock night...definitely not stuff you'll be hearing anywhere else in Hollywood. The Room looks like it's definitely on an upswing... Pros: great music, no more smoking!, not too crowded Cons: clientele varies more

I may take up smoking... 6/22/2002

... so that I can handle breathing The Room's smoke-infused air for more than 30 minutes. The crowd that has adopted the bar as their own feels genuine, cool, gregarious. Simply too dark to be subjected to the usual LA routine of looking-you-intently-up-and-down-just-in-case-you're-a-celebrity. Blessedly, noone will see you here unless you elect to stand near a candle. Pros: dark, intimate, the anti-slick Cons: thick with smoke more

Burn Your Clothes 6/18/2002

If you can get past the fact that virtually everyone in the place smokes, and that it's kind of a dump, The Room is a pretty cool place. Great crowd, fitting no particular mold, and good music make up for a really small space and a tiny dance floor. Very outgoing group there makes this place a great spot to meet new people. Pros: Good crowd Cons: Too smokey more

It's really just a room 6/5/2002

The entrance is unmarked and around the back in an alley. The space is small and dark so bring a flashlight if you want to find your way to the unisex bathroom. They manage to squeeze in a turntable and a DJ who spins some kick ass hip hop and funk next to a 2 x 2 dance corner. (It does not constitute official "floor" status.) The best part is that the crowd is so friendly that no one cares that you're all on top of one another and you just end up dancing where you're standing. Well worth it. Just don't go if you're claustrophobic. more

Editorial

  • In Short
With a totally revamped look and a double-its-size addition to its formerly small and crowded quarters, this lounge is still where low-key night owls make the rounds for cool cocktails and a relaxed scene. Even though it now has a street-front entrance, this famed back-alley bar still feels a little naughty. Inside, the mix of dark leather booths, exposed brick and a long, narrow wooden bar aren't necessarily inspired, but the place still manages to keep its previous (and now larger) appeal. As partners Ashley Joyce and Jeremy Thomas say, "The Room has always been a bar where people have felt comfortable; a refuge in Hollywood without the Hollywood attitude."
